The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced the recovery of public assets worth Ksh1.4 billion in Mombasa County, with a prime 4.8-acre parcel already cleared for the construction of 720 government housing units.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud confirmed that the Ksh500 million Hobley Estate has been flattened and is ready for development. This property is a key part of the broader recovery drive, which also includes a Ksh104 million plot for the Kenya Airports Authority and a Ksh50 million parcel for Kenya Railways, among others.
“The recovered properties are earmarked for public utility use by various government institutions,” a commission statement read, listing agencies like the Ministry of Housing, the Mombasa County Government, and the Kenya Wildlife Service as beneficiaries.
The commission affirmed its commitment to expanding this effort, noting it is currently pursuing the recovery of approximately Ksh10.3 billion in other assets nationwide through court processes and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
This announcement follows another major recovery last month, when the EACC successfully reclaimed a 17-acre piece of land worth Ksh2.8 billion that had been illegally excised from Karura Forest 27 years ago. The Nairobi Environment and Land Court ruled that the land, originally intended for a teachers’ college and the forest, was unlawfully allocated to a former minister and sold to private developers.
