A Kenyan police officer deployed under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti was fatally shot by suspected gang members on Sunday, February 23.
The officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was on patrol when his team came under attack, sustaining gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement released Monday from NPS Headquarters, Director of Corporate Communications Muchiri Nyaga expressed deep condolences to the officer’s family and friends, assuring them of the Service’s full support during this difficult time.
“The National Police Service has learned with sorrow of the unfortunate demise of one of our own in the line of duty,” Nyaga said, emphasizing the officer’s sacrifice in the pursuit of peace.
The MSS, launched to assist the Haiti National Police (HNP) in combating rampant gang violence and restoring stability, has seen Kenyan officers play a pivotal role.
Nyaga commended the resilience of the deployed team, noting their unwavering commitment to the mission’s mandate despite such losses.
The officer’s death underscores the perilous conditions faced by the multinational force in Haiti, where armed gangs continue to challenge efforts to curb violence and lawlessness.
The NPS has notified the fallen officer’s family, and arrangements are underway to honor his service.
