Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro is preparing to lay his father, Mzee Gedion Baya Mung’aro, to rest on June 25, 2025, following his passing on Father’s Day, June 15, while receiving treatment at Kilifi County Hospital.
The funeral arrangements indicate that the cortege will leave Kilifi County Hospital Funeral Home on June 24 for a prayer service and night vigil at the family’s homestead in Dabaso, Watamu, ahead of the burial the next day.
Mzee Mung’aro, a patriarch to a large and respected coastal family, leaves behind his wife Beatrice Bahati and widows Janer Kofedha Darris Bahati, Loyce Kache, and the late Joyce Kanze Kombe. He was the father of over 30 children, including Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, and the late Furaha, Sidi, Josephine, and Sheina, among many others.
Governor Mung’aro broke the news on social media in a heartfelt message that reflected both personal grief and deep gratitude.
“Today, on Father’s Day, I have lost my father,” he wrote. “The man who shaped my life, instilled in me the values I live by, and stood by me through every chapter.”
The news prompted a wave of condolence messages from political leaders across the country. Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir pledged solidarity with the Mung’aro family, while Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga described the late Mzee as a man whose legacy will live on through his children.
Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, in a moving tribute, said:
“It is with profound sadness that I have received the heartbreaking news of Mzee Mung’aro’s passing. Please know that my heart is with you during this difficult time of mourning.”
The late Mzee Mung’aro will be remembered as a family man whose legacy is deeply rooted in Kilifi’s political and community life.
