More than 20 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Kilifi County have endorsed Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa as their next Governor in the next year General Election.

Speaking after a breakfast meeting with the legislator at her Kakuyuni home the MCAs led by Deputy Speaker Stanley Kenga said it was time that a woman now takes over leadership from Governor Amason Kingi who is leaving the top seat after two terms in office.

Governor Kingi is the pioneer Governor after the onset of devolution and will be existing the scene in 2022.

The 28 MCA assured Ms Jumwa of their unwavering support during the consultative meeting that lasted almost the entire day on Friday.

During the engagement talk, the politicians focused on a new conversation that is centred on economic transformation of the county and also the shifts in regional politics.

“We know time is now ripe for women in leadership. We have seen the exceptional leadership of women and a good example is our current Chief Justice Martha Koome. She is an exemplary women leader and this is what we want to witness now in Kilifi, that after the exit of Governor Kingi, a woman takes over the top steering wheel of this county,” said Sokoni MCA Gilbert Peru.

Mwawesa MCA Caroline Kalume said Kilifi is now ready for a change after Governor Kingi and that change is Ms Jumwa who has shown good leadership to the women and to the larger Kilifi people in generally.

“We are happy for your invite and as you can see here, we are almost full house and thanks for your agenda. Most of us are happy and understand the importance of women leadership. The future is female and because of that, rest assured that you have our support,” said Ms Kalume.

Ms Jumwa said she was ready to work with all the people of Kilifi and that her journey towards the top seat is on and this time, with a thud.

“Let me thank all of you for making it to this consultative meeting. It has been my pleasure to share with you the future aspirations of this region. I am in the gubernatorial race and very serious indeed and we need to walk together in this journey. Women leadership is what is waiting in Kilifi County after Governor Kingi leaves the office.  I am the one who is fit and ready to fill that gap,” said Ms Jumwa.

His statement comes only some days after former Chief Officer in charge of Agriculture in the first regime of Governor Kingi, Baha Nguma announced in Watamu that he is also in the race. Mr Nguma had been rumored to be in the race until last week when he announced it and said that he will official make his declaration next month.

“I am in the race for the top seat and come next month, I will elaborate the basket of goodies that awaits the people of Kilifi under my leadership,” said Mr Baha in an interview with Uzalendo News.

The Kilifi gubernatorial seat has so far attracted several aspirants among them County Assembly speaker Jimmy Kahindi, and businessman Dzombo Mbaru.Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi is also in the race to succeed his boss.
