Wajir South MP Demands Investigation Over Nuclear Waste Dumping Scandal

A Kenyan lawmaker has called for an investigation into potential nuclear waste dumping in the country’s Northern Eastern region.

Wajir South MP Mohammed Adow specifically requested a statement from the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining.

Concerns about Health and Environment

Hon. Adow cited claims that the government, through the Ministry of Energy, authorized the dumping of hazardous materials, including nuclear waste, in the late 1990s.

He expressed concern about the potential link between this alleged dumping and the high prevalence of cancer cases reported in the region.

Medical experts have confirmed the dangers of nuclear waste, highlighting its radioactive properties that can cause serious health issues like cancer, genetic damage, and acute radiation syndrome upon exposure.

Seeking Accountability and Solutions

MP Adow urged the committee to investigate the following:

  • The truth behind the alleged nuclear waste dumping
  • Potential environmental impact of such dumping
  • Possible connection between the alleged dumping and the high cancer rates

He further demanded that the Ministry of Energy address the issue of compensation for:

  • Residents whose land was used for the alleged dumping
  • Individuals whose health may have been affected by the waste

The lawmaker also requested clarification on the government’s existing regulatory framework for the safe disposal of hazardous waste, including nuclear materials.

This ensures such materials are handled without endangering people, animals, and the environment.
