Kisumu: Eight Arrested For Using Banned Plastic Bags

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has arrested eight traders in Ahero, Kisumu County after they were found with 16,000 pieces of banned plastic bags.

According to NEMA, the traders will appear in court on Thursday to answer to the charges.

The agency also arrested a hotel proprietor for failing to comply with Effluent Discharge License as stipulated in the Water Quality Regulations 2006 in facilities within Kisumu County.

“The Authority is undertaking a nationwide crackdown targeting unlicensed and illegal effluent discharges to control pollution from such sources as well bring facilities to compliance within the Water Quality Regulations,” NEMA said.

NEMA has further called on all regulated facilities to endeavor to voluntarily comply with various Environment Regulations so as to ensure a clean and healthy environment in the country.

Through a gazette notice dated February 27, 2017, the Ministry of Environment prohibited the use of plastic carrier bags.

The ban went into effect in August of that year.
