Kisumu To Provide Ksh 2 Million Fingerlings For Fish Farmers

Kisumu county government is set to procure fingerlings worth KSh 2 million and fish feed with KSh 1 million for fish cage farmers who lost their fish in lake Victoria recently due to the upwelling of the lake. 

Farmers affected are from Othany, Pier, Usoma, Genge, and Dunga beaches. 

In Othany beach, farmers incurred a loss of KSh40 million.

“We plan to kick off a campaign Proper assessment of the capacity of the lake in regard to siting (location) of cage installation and compliance with set guidelines on proper siting of cage.” Anyang’ Nyong’o said.
On pollution, the governor said plans were in place to mitigate on rising threats to the environment.

“We plan to kick off a multi-stakeholders approach to address pollution of the lake and the environment. We want to engage stakeholders on how to save Lake Victoria. This initiative will be championed by the county department of Water and Environment.” He added.

Rosemary Raluoch chief officer for Livestock and Fishery has said plans are in place to set up a fish feed factory to focus on soya beans production.
