Lawyers: BBI Process Was Promoted By Junet and Waweru, Not President Uhuru

Dennis Waweru and MP Junet Mohamed, according to Senior Counsel Otiende Omollo, were the promoters of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was not the Bill’s promoter, according to the lawyer, who indicated in his comments to the Court of Appeal on Tuesday.

“Against all controverted evidence, the promoters of this initiative were Dennis Waweru and Junet Mohamed, the court insists on finding President Kenyatta as the promoter. Anyone can support the initiative,” Omollo said.

The court erred in its conclusion, according to the Senior Counsel, especially since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recognizes Mr. Waweru and MP Junet as Bill promoters.

At the same time, he claimed that the IEBC had directed the two to gather signatures in support of the Bill, rather than President Kenyatta.

Signature verification

During the submissions, the issue of signature verification arose, with attorney Omollo stating that the IEBC was only supposed to verify one million registered voters, not one million signatures.

IEBC lawyer Eric Gumbo weighed in on the matter, saying a forensic audit of one million signatures, would take thousands of years.

“We do not have a database of signatures, a document requiring verification from DCI, takes atleast a minimum 1 month. We had 3.4 million signatures to verify,” Gumbo said.
