Likoni footbridge works: Ship ferrying in Steel piles set to dock in Mombasa

The steel tubular piles for assembling of the Likoni floating bridge will arrive in Mombasa this Friday.- By Gerald Gekara.

Uzalendo News has established that the shipment is set to dock on Friday, to begin the offshore assembling of the bridge.

The Contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation will then mobilize the piling barge (for carrying pilling rig) & flat barge (for carrying construction materials).

At the same time, the floating bridge will arrive in October.

The bridge is being assembled in Kenya and will be completed by 31 st December 2020.

The new facility will decongest the Likoni channel, which is a big concern to the Government and the people of Mombasa.

More than 300,000 people cross the Likoni channel daily. The barges will be placed on the main channel by steel anchors. According to engineers, floating bridges are the safest and most convenient ways of crossing channels in the world.

In the Kenyan case,  the piling rig will be mobilized from Kipevu Oil Terminal once it arrives.

Insiders confirmed the offshore construction activity will commence with pile testing this month, followed by pile driving

CRBC is expected to mobilize a floating crane to mount the superstructure into place. The Steel Struss will arrive in Mombasa, later thus month 20th September

To operationalize the project, the floating bridge will be demobilized 3 hours before any vessels dock so that the barge has enough time to withdraw undersea anchors.

A total of 74 piles are expected to be installed. the main channel.  The project is being undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA).
