LSK Moves to Uncover Circumstances Surrounding Death of Man in Police Custody

By Michelle Ndaga

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has raised concern over the death of Mr. Simon Warui, who reportedly died while in police custody at the Central Police Station in Mombasa.

In a media post, LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the society has appointed an advocate to act on behalf of Mr. Warui’s family, with the aim of monitoring investigations and ensuring that the truth surrounding his death is established.

According to the family, Mr. Warui went missing on Sunday at around 10:00 a.m., a case that was reported at Embakasi Police Station in Nairobi. However, he was later found dead under unclear circumstances at the Mombasa police station.

“The circumstances under which he wound up dead in a police station in Mombasa remain unclear, but we are working closely with our civil society partners and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to ensure this matter is investigated swiftly and conclusively,” Odhiambo noted.

LSK has also expressed gratitude to the Mombasa Law Society chairperson and her team for their support in pursuing the case. The society assured the public that it will provide updates on the findings and continue pushing for accountability and justice for Mr. Warui’s family.

The incident has heightened concerns over police accountability, with human rights bodies expected to closely monitor the progress of the investigations.
