Manchester United’s nightmare season continued Wednesday night as they suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat to a Southeast Asian XI at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in front of 72,550 fans — many of whom booed the team off the pitch.
The result capped off what has been a disastrous year for the English giants, who finished 15th in the Premier League, marking their worst campaign since 1974. Ruben Amorim’s side once again looked lethargic, uninspired, and toothless in attack, failing to threaten in the Malaysian heat.
Despite the loyal turnout in Kuala Lumpur, some fans began leaving before the final whistle, while others made their frustration heard loud and clear with loud boos ringing around the stadium at full-time.
United’s lack of cutting edge was once again evident — and this performance only fuels reports that the club is preparing to splash £62.5 million ($85 million) on Brazilian attacker Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
Coach Ruben Amorim, visibly frustrated during the game and often seen shaking his head, refused to confirm the transfer deal but acknowledged the fans’ reaction.
“The boos from the fans, it’s something that we need,” Amorim said post-match.
“These people believe in Manchester United no matter what the context. It’s our duty to improve this team.”
Despite fielding a strong lineup including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Højlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and goalkeeper André Onana, United never found rhythm or control.
The match was the first of two post-season fixtures in Asia, with the team now heading to Hong Kong.
“We were slow… and we still don’t have it in us to win every exercise in training, every game,” Amorim admitted. “We need that hunger to win — it’s not there yet.”
