Mandera county residents broke into celebration of their first female Assistant Chief in the county’s history.

Leila Kullow was chosen as the Komor Location Assistant Chief amid a male-dominated competition.

Jeremiah Wangilla, Central Division Assistant Deputy County Commissioner, asked Leila to get ready for her new duty.

He wished Leila well in her new position and stated that the government is committed to gender equity and will always hire more females as Chiefs.

Senior Chief Ali Noor of Central Location said Leila’s appointment will improve service delivery, particularly to women.

Noor stated that she will assist the government in reducing crime along the border.

In Mandera there are no elected females in all elective posts except for the women representative post.

In North Eastern men have dominated all elective positions, with the elders’ councils, mainly dominated by men having a say on who gets which position during elections.
