Maraga to Address Nation Over Extra-Judicial Killings Amid Ojwang’ Death Uproar

Former Chief Justice David Maraga is set to make a significant public statement on Monday, June 16, concerning the alarming rise in extra-judicial killings in Kenya, including the recent controversial death of Albert Omondi Ojwang’.

A statement released by the Maraga ‘27 campaign on Tuesday confirmed the press briefing will take place at 10:00 a.m. outside Vigilance House, the national police headquarters in Nairobi. Media houses have been invited to cover the anticipated address.

“Following the recent trend of extra-judicial killings and particularly the brutal murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang in or around police custody, CJ (Emeritus) David Maraga will be giving notice of planned action to the police,” the statement read.

Ojwang’, a blogger from Homa Bay County, reportedly died on June 7 while in police custody, days after his arrest on allegations of publishing false information. His death has triggered national outrage and calls for accountability.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since taken over investigations, with police officers involved summoned for questioning.

Some officers, including those from Central Police Station, have claimed Ojwang’ was already unwell when booked, while detectives from the DCI dispute this, insisting he was healthy upon transfer.

However, the probe has encountered complications, with key CCTV footage from the OCS office allegedly missing, raising fresh concerns about a possible cover-up.

IPOA has seven days to forward the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who will determine whether charges will be filed against any officers.
