Matatus To Carry Full Capacity operations Amid Surging Delta Variant

Public transport has been reinstated back to normal after PSVs were ordered to carry their full capacity.

Initially, public transport operators were ordered to carry 60 percent of their passengers to help in curbing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier on 14 seater matatus were allowed to carry just 8 excluding the driver and his conductor.

Ministry of Transport in a press release on Friday, August 6, has stated they will resume pre-Covid operation modes and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be allowed to carry normally.

This was after a successful meeting between the Ministry of Transport through Cabinet Administrative Secretary (CAS) Chris Obure and Matatu Saccos.

The two bodies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the public transport sector to self-regulate.

In the meeting, the matatu operators revealed that they had lost close to Ksh31 billion since the order was made in March 2020 by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

At the time the country was racing against time to curb the spread of the disease that brought deaths to many.
