Media Council Condemns Attack On Kilifi Journalists

The Media Council of Kenya has called for the immediate arrest of Kilifi county staff who assaulted three journalists. 

The trio; Mr Elias Yaa working with The Star Newspaper, Mr Daniel Peshu, and Ms Maureen Ongala of Daily Nation were assaulted at the Katisa Maitha grounds.

The journalists, according to MCK, were covering a protest against the County Government on 23 December 2022. 

“The Council condemns the atrocious acts meted against journalists as they are a direct violation of press freedom as espoused in articles 34 and 35 of the Kenyan Constitution.”

The Council calls for swift investigations and prosecution of the perpetrator alleged to be staff attached to the Governor’s office on the attacks against

The matter has since been recorded at the Kilifi Police Station under the OB number 33/23/12/2022.

Media Council further demanded swift action against the staff, who had violated the rights of journalists. 

“MCK wishes to inform the perpetrators and the public that any attacks on journalists is a criminal act and is against the journalist’s rights and privileges protected by law under the 2010 Kenyan Constitution and the Media Council of Kensa Act, 2013.” 

Attacks on journalists have been on the rise in recent weeks.  

Moses Omusolo, a business editor under the Standard Group was found murdered and dumped along Kangundo Road. 

Earlier in December, security detail attached to the Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi accosted a Nation journalist in a video doing rounds on social media.
