Met Warns Of More Storms, Heavy Rainfall Across Kenya

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to brace themselves for more rains across the country starting Tuesday.

Rainfall is expected to continue over the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast from December 5 to December 12.

North-eastern and north-western Kenya are expected to be generally dry.

At the same time, isolated storms and heavy rainfall are expected in parts of the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the southern lowlands.

Temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius are expected to be experienced over much of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya regions.

“Some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time (minimum) temperatures of less than 10oC,” the Met Department said.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley covers Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot counties.

Turkana and Samburu counties are in northwestern Kenya, while the Highlands East of the Rift Valley include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi counties.

Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties are in northern Kenya, while Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta counties are in southern Kenya.

At the same time, the Coast region includes Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties.

Kenya is dealing with the devastation caused by heavy rains caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon in most parts of the country.

According to government figures released Monday, floods have killed 154 people so far, with tens of thousands more affected.
