MOH, Development Partners Collaborate To Upgrade The National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory

The National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory is being modernised by the Ministry of Health and Development Partners.

The facility will be upgraded to a modern Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory (BSL-3), guaranteeing the highest levels of safety.

For the management of TB multidrug-resistant and virological pathogens, the BSL-3 will be a high-security containment facility.

To discuss recommendations, the task team in charge of the refurbishment met with Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards.

To comply with BSL3 containment criteria set by the World Health Organisation, the task group advised that crucial systems be restored.

In accordance with technical and regulatory norms, the renovation comprises improvements to the structure, electrical system, and mechanical system.

She expressed the Ministry’s commitment to expedite the renovation process, aiming to enhance staff safety and improve healthcare quality for Kenyans.
