MPs Set For Special House Sitting

Amos Kimunya, the National Assembly’s Leader of Majority, has written to House Speaker Justin Muturi, proposing that Parliament schedule a three-day special session.

The agenda will be to finish debating and vote on the divisive political parties amendment bill 2021.

With the move expected to be approved, opponents of the bill’s provisions have vowed to vote down the measures, which they argue are ill-timed and in violation of the 2010 constitution.

The latest development comes only two days after the chamber was rocked by turmoil during a contentious vote on the contentious bill.

MPs were debating whether to adopt or reject amendments proposed by Kandara MP Alice Wahome, which sought to eliminate a system for forming a coalition political party.

The afternoon sitting was marked by heated confrontations, culminating in Minority Leader John Mbadi’s suspension for five consecutive sittings due to misbehaviour for reportedly hitting Kipsengeret Koross MP Sigowet Soin.

During the melee, Sigowet-Soin MP Kipsengeret Koros was also injured in the face.

The decision to extend the deadline by three days is seen as part of a larger strategy to deal with delays caused by tough positions taken by parties on both sides of the political divide.

Kenyans expressed their displeasure with the MPs’ behaviour on social media, with the majority expressing their dismay.
