Multi Agency Team Meets In Machakos Over Cholera Outbreak

The DCC Machakos and Ministry Of Health (MOH) co-chaired a meeting at Machakos Level 5 Hospital Boardroom to deliberate on the confirmed cases of Cholera at Machakos GK Prison and suspected cases at Machakos School of Deaf.

MOH informed the meeting that 17 positive cases of Cholera patients had been confirmed in Machakos GK Prison, and 165 suspected cases of Cholera had been confirmed at Machakos School for the Deaf (155 are stable, with 10 on IV fluids).

The patients have been isolated within the school, according to MOH, and are being cared for by medical personnel from Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
There is also one case at Bishop Kioko Hospital where the victim was admitted after spending the weekend with her sister in Machakos Prison.

“Another case is of a mechanic working at industrial area garages and currently admitted at level 5. Contact tracing has gone to his house at makaburini,” the team stated.

The Multi-agency Committee recommended that Public Sensitization on cholera preventive measures through barazas and local media to commence with immediate effect.

It also advocated for a ban on food hawking within Machakos Township, as well as for public health officials to ensure that all eateries and hotels adhere to the highest levels of hygiene.

The Sub County Administrator/ Public Health officials were recommended to issue public notices communicating the ban.

Machakos Water and Sewerage Company has also been directed to conduct tests to ensure the quality of water used in the town, including boreholes at the Prison and the Machakos School for the Deaf.

The committee also recommended that the public be denied access to dispensaries located at both Machakos GK prison and Machakos School for the Deaf until cholera is eradicated.
