Muslims across Kenya marked the end of their Ramadhan fast on Monday, after the moon was sighted.

The Chief Kadhi Ahmed spoke in Mombasa on Sunday evening.

“Tarehe mbili May 2022 ndio itakua siku ya kwanza Eid-ul-Fitrya mwaka huu. Kwa hivyo tunawaombea wakenya wote nawaislamu kwa jumla kila la heri, tunawatakia Eid ya Baraka (May 2, 2022 will be the first day for Eid-ul-Fitr. We are therefore praying for all Kenyans and Muslims in Kenya, and the world, wishing them a happy Eid,” Ahmed said.

The festival of Idd-ul-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-breaking, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Muslims congregate in mosques or open spaces to offer two units of prayer known as “Rakat.”

The prayers are followed by a sermon in which the imam requests forgiveness, mercy, and peace for all creatures in the world.

In a gazette notice on Tuesday, Matiang’i declared May 3rd a public holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act.
