Mwangi Wa Iria, former Murang’a Governor, will now appear before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday at 8 a.m. for questioning regarding fraud investigations.
Wa Iria was summoned to appear on Tuesday, but his lawyers arrived instead and requested that he be allowed to postpone his appearance by one day.
In a statement to newsrooms on Tuesday, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said the commission had received and accepted Wa Iria’s request.
“Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has responded to the commission’s order to appear by sending their advocates to request for re-scheduling of his appearance from Tuesday, April 16, 2024, to Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 8am. The Commission has considered and accepted the request,” stated Mr. Ngumbi.
The former governor is one of eight people set to be charged by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with Ksh. 140 million in procurement fraud at the Murang’a County government between 2015 and 2016.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the DPP stated that the eight are accused of irregular tender awarding and other procurement irregularities totalling the aforementioned amount.
The DPP stated that EACC investigations revealed that the suspects fraudulently awarded tenders to Top Image Media Consultancy Limited and Value View Limited despite conflicts of interest.
Patrick Kagumu Mukuria, Jane Wanjiru Mbuthia, David Maina Kiama, David Mamma Njeri, Jane Waigwe Kimani, Solomon Mutura Kimani, and Peter Muturi Karanja are the other seven persons of interest.
