Nairobi County Arrests 10 People, Warns Traders and Residents over Illegal Dumping

Nairobi County has intensified its crackdown on illegal dumping after ten people were arrested in an operation along Jogoo Road.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 30, Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria said the move is aimed at enforcing compliance among traders who have defied calls to manage their waste responsibly.

“Today, I led an enforcement operation along Jogoo Road where we arrested traders involved in illegal dumping. Jogoo Road traders have become notorious for unlawful waste disposal, often choosing not to pay for garbage collection and proper disposal services,” he said.

Mosiria noted that previous attempts to use engagement and awareness campaigns had not yielded the expected results, pushing the county to adopt stricter measures.

“In our efforts to keep Nairobi clean, I have come to the realization that sensitization, engagement, and continuous advisories on proper waste management are not yielding the desired results. What will work more effectively is strict enforcement.

“This morning, we arrested 10 individuals directly involved in illegal dumping, including one notorious street man who is often used by traders to dispose of waste in exchange for a few coins or food,” he added.

Mosiria further warned that the crackdown will continue until traders comply with proper waste disposal regulations.

“We shall sustain this exercise until full compliance is achieved. Enforcement is not meant to punish but to protect the health, dignity, and cleanliness of our city. I will personally camp along Jogoo Road for the next one week to ensure this menace is fully addressed and compliance is achieved,” he concluded.

Earlier September, Mosiria announced a crackdown on illegal dumping and obstruction of drainage systems in Eastleigh.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 9, he warned that hawkers and landlords contributing to the area’s growing waste management problem will face arrest and prosecution if found culpable.

“I have put on notice all individuals and businesses engaging in illegal dumping within Eastleigh. Hawkers who block and occupy drainage systems will be arrested and prosecuted. Landlords dumping garbage directly onto roads or into neighboring compounds will also face strict legal action,” he said.

Mosiria added that the enforcement operation will be conducted under his direct leadership to ensure accountability and effectiveness.

“I will personally lead the exercise to restore order and cleanliness in Eastleigh. I call upon all residents to embrace these changes by maintaining cleanliness in their homes, places of work, and frontages. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and more organized environment for everyone,” he added.
