Excavators pitched tent at the Embakasi railway line in preparation for the arrival of the Diesel Multiple Unit trains expected to arrive in August – By Gerald Gekara.
The Kenya Railway services spearheaded the works to restore railway lines paving way for more efficient train units from the Kingdom of Spain.
In an update to Kenyans on the progress of the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Plan, P.S Urban Planning Prof. Charles Hinga announced that the refurbished trains were loaded on to trucks for transport to the port.
The trains will be transported for the next 30 days, with the ministry anticipating their arrival at the port of Mombasa in Mid-August 2020.
The trains will cost the taxpayer about Ksh 1.5 Billion and are expected to serve Nairobi for the next 25 years.
This comes after the recent rehabilitation of the Thika-Nanyuki Meter Gauge Railway, that had been out of service for several years.
This will be an upgrade to Kenya’s urban railway network and tame ruthless traffic jams associated with multiple private cars plying the city.
