Sakaja resigns from powerful seat after arrest at a high-end Kilimani club

Nairobi Senator Johson Sakaja has stepped down from chairing the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on the COVID-19 pandemic – By Gerald Gekara.

In his statement shortly after submitting himself to the Kilimani Police Station, Sakaja resigned from his position as ‘ a good example to others’.

“I wish to state that I have resigned from the Ad Hoc Committee that I have been chairing and have notified the speaker of the same with the aim of setting a good example,” he stated.

This comes after Sakaja was arrested at Ladies Lounge in Kilimani, Nairobi county with at around 1 a.m on Saturday.

“I was outside my house past 9 pm which is after curfew hours, it is regrettable but all of us make mistakes,” Sakaja said.

“I will be abiding by the law, no one is above the law, I have paid the cash bail and will appear before the court tomorrow and the entire course of law will be followed,”

Prior to his acceptance, Sakaja had denied being arrested by the police, despite a video doing rounds on social media depicted the senator in a loud confrontation with police officers.

Sakaja will be arraigned before court, to answer to charges of flouting a ban on social gatherings.

So far the country has recorded over 13,000 cases of the coronavirus and 243 deaths.
