The Newly designed Nairobi railway system is set to revolutionize transport within the Central Business District, by ferrying over 30,000 Nairobians per hour.
This was revealed during Transport and Infrastructure CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s appearance before the Senate committee on transport.
Murkomen alluded to the fact that less than 20 per cent of Nairobians use private cars, stressing the need to improve public transport.
The New public transport revamp will see the county focus on rail transport to address the needs of thousands who opt for trains to evade traffic jams.
The historic Nairobi central railway station will be redesigned as part of the Railway City project by Kenya Railways Corporation.
The project, which has the support of the United Kingdom, entails the creation of a 425-acre urban development between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and Bunyala Road, which would include transport stations, housing, and offices, among other amenities.
The Nairobi Railway City, designed by British architects, is expected to decongest the central business district by encouraging enterprises to relocate from the city center to the new development’s special economic zones.
The first phase of the project will cost £80 million (Sh11.7 billion) and will be funded by the United Kingdom Export Finance.
