BY PRUDENCE WANZA – Nakuru County Director of Education has asked schools in the county to exercise safety measures during this short rains season.

In a letter addressed to all Sub-County Directors of Education, the Kenya Metrological Department in Nakuru warns the rains are expected to be above normal in the October to December rainy season.

Lawrence Karuntimi has urged school principals, headteachers, and all teachers, children not to release children from school when raining and to ensure children stay away from windows and doors when raining to minimize the risk of being struck by lightning.

Karuntimi has also asked parents to escort the pupils when crossing flooded rivers and not to swim or cross flowing rivers.

“Children should avoid walking barefooted to prevent themselves from being struck by lightning. Children should not shield themselves under tall trees.” Said Karuntimi in the letter.

Heavy rains are currently being experienced all over the country with some areas experiencing floods leading to loss of lives.
