Five women and two men will remain in police custody for the next two days after they were arraigned for abetting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Mukurweini, Nyeri County.

The women Christine Thenya, Alice Wandia, Cecilia Nyaguthii, Rose Mumbi and Esther Ng’endo, with their male counterparts being Aloise Waweru and Wahome Muriuki are to be detained at Mukurweini Police Station pending ruling on their bail application.

After being arrested on Monday, the suspects appeared in Nyeri court on Tuesday before resident Magistrate Damacline Bosibori Nyakundi.

Police rescued eight girls from the home of a suspect who is said to have eluded capture. Six of the eight girls are believed to have undergone the procedure.

According to the investigating officer’s testimony, Elizabeth Mwikali, the suspects were arrested on April 4 after receiving reports of girls who had been rushed to Mukurweini Level 4 Hospital and were bleeding profusely.

The prosecution, led by Daniel Muthee, sought 6 days to question suspects and witnesses and record statements, as well as more time to recover items used in the crime.

Muthee, on the other hand, contended that the offense is serious and that the risks of flight and interference are real.

The decision on the bail application will be issued on April 7.
