ODM Marks 20 Years in Kenyan Politics as Oburu Odinga Takes Helm

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has launched a three-day celebration at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, marking 20 years of the party’s influence in Kenyan politics.

The event, running from November 14 to 16, brings together party officials, leaders, and supporters to commemorate two decades of ODM’s political journey.

At the launch, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga was confirmed as the new party leader, signaling a new chapter in ODM’s leadership. Alongside him, endorsements were announced for Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy leaders.

Parallel sessions during the celebrations have focused on promoting inclusion and representation, with discussions highlighting the roles of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in political leadership.

Organizers described these sessions as part of ODM’s commitment to sustaining the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, the party’s long-serving former leader.

However, some critics have voiced concerns over nepotism in the leadership transition, questioning the concentration of key positions within the Odinga family and their allies. Party officials responded by emphasizing continuity, experience, and loyalty as key factors in selecting the leadership team.

The Mombasa celebrations mark both a commemoration of ODM’s historical milestones and a strategic platform for its future political agenda, as the party prepares to consolidate its influence across Kenya ahead of upcoming elections.
