Over 200 Families Displaced In Karachuonyo As Floods Destroy Homes

Kibiri Ward in Karachuonyo constituency is drowning in despair as floods from Homa Hills have swept through Kojwang sublocation, displacing over 200 families and leaving a trail of shattered lives.

The deluge, unleashed by relentless rains, has swallowed homes, livestock, and over 100 hectares of farmland, with 96 households losing nearly everything in a matter of hours.

The scene in Katonde is grim—mud-soaked ruins where houses once stood, crops washed downstream, and families clinging to what little remains.

“We’ve lost it all—our homes, our food, our hope,” sobbed Jane Atieno, a mother of three now camped at Kandiege Primary School. Around 70 households have sought shelter there for three days, sleeping on cold floors, their lives upended by nature’s wrath.

Victims are crying out for help, slamming the government for dragging its feet.

“We need aid now—food, blankets, something!” pleaded fisherman John Omondi, whose nets and boat were swept away. Local authorities and aid groups are scrambling to assess the carnage, but relief efforts are patchy, leaving many in limbo.

The floods, fueled by Homa Hills’ runoff, have exposed Karachuonyo’s vulnerability yet again. MPs and residents are pointing fingers, demanding dykes and long-term fixes promised after past disasters.

Meanwhile, humanitarian teams are racing against time to deliver basics as more rain looms.
