Omanyala Fires Paris Warning Shot With 9.79 Sprint

Ferdinand Omanyala, the Kenyan champion sprinter, set the Nairobi track ablaze on Saturday at the Kenyan Olympic trials.

Clocking a blistering 9.79 seconds in the 100m race, Omanyala not only secured his place at the upcoming Paris Olympics but also stole the show with a new world-leading time this season.

This impressive feat was a powerful statement of intent from Omanyala, who is already the reigning Commonwealth Games 100m champion and Africa’s fastest athlete.

The win wasn’t entirely unexpected, with Omanyala hinting at his ambitions after the semi-finals.

This race was likely his last in Nairobi before the Paris Games, and he did not disappoint the roaring Kenyan crowd.

Omanyala’s win wasn’t the only story of the race. Mark Otieno, a former national champion, put on a valiant effort, finishing second at 10.12 seconds.

Though Otieno fell short of the qualifying time for Paris, his performance demonstrated the strength of Kenyan sprinting.

With the Kenyan Olympic trials concluded, the spotlight now shifts to the horizon and the highly anticipated Paris Olympics.

Omanyala’s world-leading time has served as a warning shot to his competitors, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown in the 100m finals.

Germany Thump Scotland 5-1 in Euro 2024 Opener

The curtain rose on Euro 2024 in Munich last night, and it was a night of German dominance and Scottish heartbreak. Joachim Löw’s men put on a masterclass, thrashing a ten-man Scotland side 5-1 in a record-breaking opening match for the European Championship.

From the first whistle, Germany asserted their authority. Florian Wirtz, the young prodigy, etched his name into history by scoring the first goal of the tournament in just the 10th minute.

The Bayern Munich juggernaut, Jamal Musiala, continued the assault ten minutes later, leaving Scotland’s Angus Gunn with no chance.

Just before halftime, Scotland’s woes deepened. A reckless, two-footed challenge by Ryan Porteous resulted in a penalty and a well-deserved red card. Kai Havertz stepped up coolly, sending Gunn the wrong way to put Germany 3-0 up.

The second half was a display of German control. Scotland, a man down and facing a rampant German attack, were pinned back in their own half. Niclas Fullkrug added a fourth for the home side, before a late own goal by Antonio Rüdiger offered a consolation goal for Scotland.

Emre Can, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, put the final nail in the coffin with a goal in the dying moments. This 5-1 victory marks the biggest win in any European Championship opening match, a statement of intent from the host nation.

Germany’s Redemption Song

This win is a significant moment for Germany. After disappointing performances in recent tournaments, Löw’s men have served a strong reminder of their potential. The clinical finishing, the dominant midfield control, and the resolute defense paint a picture of a team hungry for redemption.

For Scotland, the task just got considerably tougher. They will need to regroup quickly and find a way to win their first major tournament match since 1996 if they want to progress beyond the group stage.

UK Announces Sh82 Million Funding To Kenya

United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Rishin Sunak has announced Sh82 million (£500,000) funding to Kenya to support infrastructure projects.

In a statement on Friday, June 14, Sunak said the Sh82 million will be used to support the planning and implementation of green infrastructure initiatives between the UK, the Government of Kenya, and the wider G7.

The UK Prime Minister noted that the partnership between the UK and Kenya will lead to closer cooperation on strategic infrastructure and investment.

“The funding also includes £500,000 for an initiative to support planning, prioritisation and implementation of green infrastructure initiatives between the UK, the Government of Kenya and the wider G7.

“Focusing on transport projects selected from the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), this innovative partnership will lead to closer cooperation with the Kenyan Government on strategic infrastructure and investment and is the first partnership between the G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment and AGII,” read the statement in part.

At the same time, Sunak said that the UK government is committed to driving a more effective international system that improves lives for people across the world.

He pointed out that the green transition and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) are key components of creating the international system.

“The green transition and the development of AI are key components of this, and the funding announced today will help ensure that these seismic changes happen in a way that works for all,” Sunak added.

On May 6, the UK government donated Sh 140 million to help approximately 6900 Kenyan households affected by floods.

Before that the UK Government had announced Sh1.1 billion (£6.6 million) funding to kick-start the development of fifty green investment projects across Kenya.

Boost For Raila’s AU Bid As Ruto Secures Support From Algeria President Tebboune

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has received a boost in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship following a meeting between President William Ruto and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In a statement on Friday, June 14, President Ruto said the Algerian President has agreed to support Kenya’s candidature in AUC.

The two Heads of State met on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Apulia, Italy.

“I have held a discussion with President Tebboune Amadjid of Algeria, on the sidelines of G7 meeting in Apulia, Italy, who has pledged support for Kenya’s Africa Union -Commission chairmanship bid. Kenya and Algeria hold a joint position on reforms of the African Union and International Financial Architecture that seeks to create equity and inclusion,” read the statement in part.

At the same time, Ruto announced that Algeria has agreed to offer financial support for Kenya’s peace mission to Haiti.

“Kenya is grateful to the government of Algeria for its support for the agricultural sector, especially through the provision of fertilizer. We are also thankful to Algeria for her financial support for the Kenya-led UN security mission for Haiti,” Ruto added.

Raila is seeking to replace Moussa Faki who is serving in his second and last term as the AUC chairman. The Elections for the next chairman will be held in 2025 during an AU Summit.

On Wednesday, June 5, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the Kenyan government is committed to supporting Raila in his bid.

Mudavadi termed the former Premier a competent leader and has the requisite experience.

“We said yes because Raila is competent and we are looking at Kenya’s national interests and Africa’s interests so this is not about our local issues and we really want the fourth estate to help us to protect the national interests of Kenya because it will be a first for Kenya and will be an opportunity for Kenya to offer leadership to the African Union and Raila has the requisite experience,” Mudavadi explained.

Cherotich, Chepkoech bag steeplechase slots to Paris

World 3000m steeplechase bronze medalist Faith Cherotich will make her Olympic debut in Paris where she carries Kenya’s hopes to reclaim the title alongside world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech.

Cherotich, the reigning U20 champion, pipped an unbothered Beatrice at the finish, as the duo got the automatic places in 9:22.28 and 9:22.76 respectively.

Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech was third in 9:34.86 and here fate lies with the selection panel.

The trio proved too strong for the rest of the field as, after just two laps, the field was split into two with Beatrice leading a quartet of Cherotich, Jackline and Diana Chepkemoi.

One more lap and Chepkemoi was dropped leaving the trio to battle as Jackline took charge of the race. Her lead was, however, shortlived as she too was dropped as the other two did battle, seemingly leisurely as Beatrice would later admit that the squad decided to take the race slow.

“We have been training hard preparing for the Games and our bodies are a bit tired so we settled on a comfortable pace as qualification was the most important thing for us and we were ceratin of being on the podium,” Beatrice offered after the race.

Chepkoech placed seventh in her signature event with a time of 9:16.33 at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic and she is keen to make amends in Paris and deliver Kenya’s first gold for women in the distance at the Games.

The last two titles have been won by Kenyan-born Ruth Jebet of Bahrain and Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai but Beatrice believes Kenya has a squad that could finally break the jinx.

“This is our time now. We have a strategy that we will perfect on as soon as we head to camp as at the moment everyone is preparing individually,” Chepkoech added.

Mathare United win promotion to FKF Premier League after beating Darajani Gogo

Mathare United have secured promotion back to the Kenyan Premier League after defeating Darajani Gogo 3-0 in a National Super League game at Dandora Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The win places the Slum Boys at the top of the table with 79 points, leapfrogging Mara Sugar, who have 78 points, ahead of Mara’s game against Kibera Black Stars later this afternoon.

United picked up maximum points with ease, putting Gogo, who had nothing to play for, to the sword.

Meshack Ochieno opened the scoring in the first half before Steve Kimari and Fidel Otieno completed the win with two second-half goals.

Mathare received a major boost on Thursday when the FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded them three points from their match against Rainbow played last month after a suspended Rainbow official, Lawrence Suji, was found to have sat on the bench during the game. This decision reduced the gap between Mathare and Mara to just one point.

Suji was reportedly on the bench against United despite being sent off during the game against Mara Sugar days earlier. This decision was contested by both Rainbow and Mara, who insisted that it was head coach Mohammed Hamisi and Technical Director Stanley Okumbi who were dismissed, not Suji.

“No sane coach would take his team out when he knows he is serving a suspension. Both Okumbi and Hamisi are top professionals and would never do such a thing. FKF should stop this; they are killing the beautiful game,” stated Mara Sugar’s head coach Benedict Wanjala.

He further argued that FKF should cease making decisions in the boardroom to benefit a single team and allow the games to be decided on the field.

“In my entire coaching career, I have never seen a situation like this before. We know the tactics and who they want to benefit. As Mara, we are not happy. Let football be played on the pitch, not in boardrooms. They are fighting against what God has planned, and we will beat them out there,” he added.

The two teams will meet in the penultimate game of the season next weekend at the Awendo Green Stadium.

United was relegated at the end of last season after they finished in the second-to-last position with 29 points, but they have managed to bounce back immediately. Third-placed Naivas FC and fourth-placed Nairobi United will contest the playoff spot.

Ex-governor Okoth Obado’s murder trial to be heard on June 20

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has closed its case in the 2018 murder trial of a Rongo University student, late Sharon Otieno where former Migori Governor Okoth Obado was charged alongside his PA and a driver over the alleged murder.

This is after the prosecution presented 42 witnesses in the case where the former Migori County boss is charged together with his two former assistants Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero.

It further told the trial Judge Cecilia Githua that it will not call more witnesses after the investigating officer gave his evidence.

Obado, Oyamo and Obiero were charged with the murder of former Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

She was found murdered and her body dumped in a forest in Uriri.

The defense Counsels led by Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi told the court that they need more time to file their written submissions to enable a decision to be made on whether the accused have a case to answer and subsequently put on their own defense.

The Judge directed the matter be mentioned virtually on June 20 for directions.

Man Who Disrupted CS Ndung’u On Budget Day To Be Detained Until Tuesday

Activist Julius Kimani Kamau will now have to spend the long weekend in police cells after being arraigned in Court today for disrupting CS Treasury Ndugu’s photo session during the 2024/2025 budget reading at the National Assembly.

Kamau was charged alongside Erick Mankuyu Seyiele that on June 13, 2024 at treasury building along harambee avenue in Nairobi CBD created disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by yelling and shouting.

Julius Kamau pled guilty to the offence however, he held the court at ransom by trying to address the court on what made him do what according to him ‘the legislators failed to do to stop oppression’

“I am ready to do anything to see change in this Country, am ready to die for freedom, am ready to die for justice, am ready to die for equality. We cannot continue living like slaves in our own country, in our father’s land, the land where our fathers bled and died to free this country from the shackles of colonialism…colonialism never really ended in this Country,” lamented Kamau.

The court ordered that he be escorted to hospital for mental assessment awaiting plea taking on Tuesday next week.

World Blood Donor Day 2024; 20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors

Annually observed on June 14th, World Blood Donor Day is an international event honouring and expressing gratitude to individuals who freely and selflessly donate their blood to save lives.

It is commemorated on Karl Landsteiner’s birthday, the discovered the ABO blood type system.

The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2024 is “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors!” This theme underscores the key aspect of appreciating blood donors over the past two decades of donating blood voluntarily.

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) marking its 20th anniversary, was established in 2004 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with the International Society of Blood Transfusion, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organisations, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Blood transfusions are essential to healthcare because they help patients who are in severe conditions and require blood or its components.

They are essential in maternity and child care settings, as well as in times of natural or man-made disaster, because they facilitate intricate medical and surgical procedures.

The Ministry of Health has urged Kenyans to participate in the celebration of saving lives on World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) today at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) grounds in Marsabit.

“Celebrate #WorldBloodDonorDay with us on June 14th at KMTC Grounds, Marsabit County! Your blood donation can save lives. #donateblood,” said MOH.

In a nation where seven Kenyans need a blood transfusion every ten minutes, every drop matters.

Kalonzo Rallies Azimio MPs To Reject Proposed Finance Bill 2024

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has directed Azimio Members of Parliament to reject the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Addressing the media on Friday, June 14, Kalonzo said the opposition lawmakers should be on the front line rejecting the bill.

“All well-meaning Kenyans must oppose the Finance Bill 2024 and have thus instructed all our parliamentary members to lead from the front in rejecting this punitive bill in totality,” said Kalonzo.

The former Vice President noted that if the 2024 finance Bill is passed as it is, Kenyans must be ready to tighten their belts.

“Ordinary Kenyans, mama mboga, boda boda riders and the people of mjengo and mkokoteni have nothing to gain from this bill because Kenya kwanza is targeting them for the second time with a double taxation plan that aims to increase taxes by approximately 24,000 shillings per adult Kenyan per year,” Kalonzo claimed.

The Wiper party leader pointed out that the proposed 2.5 percent Motor Vehicle Tax would raise the cost of car ownership and high insurance rates.

“It is predicted to have an effect on transportation and logistics industries therefore increasing the cost of living via a multiplayer effect,” Kalonzo stated.

The Azimio principal pointed out that the eco levy would be detrimental to Kenyans and would see the cost of basic products including bread and cooking oil going up.

“For instance, the Sh150 levy per kilo of plastic packaging will increase the cost of a 400-gram loaf of bread by Sh9 from Sh 65 to Sh 74, one liter of cooking oil by 16.81 shillings from sh300 to Sh 316.81,” he added.

Further Kalonzo lauded Kenyans who have texted their MPs to reject the 20204 Finance Bill saying the move will eventually become a norm in Kenya.

“We salute Kenyans who have used text messaging, phone calls, and social media initiatives to urge their legislators to listen to their constituents and vote no. This specific assertiveness and engagement will eventually become the norm,” Kalonzo remarked.
