Russell accuses Ferrari of selfishness over rules

Mercedes driver George Russell has accused Ferrari of being “selfish” and “silly” in blocking change to the rules to improve safety at starts.

Last week’s opening race in Australia saw a large deviation in start performance across the grid. The worst incident involved a near-miss when Alpine driver Franco Colapinto narrowly avoided smashing at high speed into the back of the slow-moving Racing Bull of Liam Lawson.

Russell said governing body the FIA had looked to modify the rule that led to those problems but said Ferrari were blocking it, without naming them.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc leapt into the lead at the start in Melbourne from fourth on the grid, emphasising the impression that the Italian team have the best starts this year.

Russell said the problems were caused by a “very quirky rule” that limits the amount of energy a car can harvest on the formation lap.

He said that the drivers in the front part of the grid were already considered by the systems to be on the lap so their practice start away from the dummy grid counted in the harvest limit, and they then struggled to recharged the battery.

By contrast, those further back could do their launches before crossing the timing line, so could recover more energy before the actual start.

Ferrari benefited because their engine has a different design than those of other manufacturers and is easier to get off the line.

Russell said: “The FIA was looking to potentially adjust that but as you can imagine some teams who were making good starts didn’t want it, which I think is just a little bit silly.

“The FIA did just want to make our life easier and just remove this harvest limit, but people have selfish views and they want to do what’s best for themselves.”

The FIA has the power to impose a change on safety grounds but has so far stopped short of doing so in the hope of achieving consensus.

Ferrari have been approached for comment.

‘Not appropriate’ for Iran to be at World Cup – Trump

US president Donald Trump has said Iran’s men’s football team is “welcome” at the 2026 World Cup but that it is not “appropriate” for them to be there “for their own life and safety”.

Trump’s comments come after Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, said his country were not in a position to participate in the tournament, which is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June.

Iran are due to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on 15 and 21 June respectively, and Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.

But their participation has been in doubt since the US and Israel launched strikes on the country, killing supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran responded by launching missiles and drones towards Israel and four Gulf Arab countries which host US military bases – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

“The Iran national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said Trump had told him Iran are “welcome to compete” at this summer’s finals.

But in an interview with the IRIB Sports Network on Tuesday, Donyamali said: “Given that this corrupt government has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances do we have the appropriate conditions to participate in the World Cup.

“Our boys are not safe, and conditions for participation do not exist.”

If Iran does withdraw from what would be its fourth consecutive World Cup, Fifa’s regulations give the governing body discretion to choose a replacement, but it is unclear who that would be.

MP Millie Odhiambo issues warning after goons raid Nyakera, Tuju properties

Suba North Member of the National Assembly, Millie Odhiambo, has raised an alarm over the rise in the use of goons in political and commercial disputes.

In a statement on Thursday, March 12, the National Assembly Minority Whip warned that the culture will come to haunt the country.

Millie warned that Kenya risks sliding into a Haiti-style gangster state if the breakdown of law and order, fueled by hired goons, continues.

“The rise of Gangster culture tolerated by the authority will haunt Kenya. 100 gangsters were used to try to evict a businessman from the premises in Kisumu.

“Similar gangsters were used to hound Hon Tuju yesterday. Soon, like Haiti, we might need other nations to assist us in dealing with gangsters,” she stated.

This comes after over 100 goons attacked the former Devolution PS Irungu Nyakera’s hotel in Kisumu County on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, Nyakera claimed that the goons stormed the premises, attacked the staff, and destroyed property of unknown value.

Nyakera noted that he was at the hotel at the time and fired two warning shots into the air to scare away the goons from the premises.

“At 5:00 am today, over 100 goons attacked my hotel in Kisumu, damaging property and injuring our staff, including tying up the security lady. Upon hearing the commotion, I quickly went after them, shooting twice in the air as they fled,” said Nyakera.

In another incident, former CS Raphael Tuju encountered goons who stormed his business premises on Wednesday evening.

Speaking after the incident, Tuju claimed that the group was claiming they were representing the new owners of the property following an alleged auction.

“The person whom they told me they were working for are people who claim to have bought this place. But all those are some of the things which are being prosecuted in court,” Tuju said.

Cleophas Malala Breaks Silence after Being Accused of Being Mole in Gachagua’s DCP

DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah, on Tuesday, March 12, denied claims that he had double-crossed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Malala denounced claims by Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina that he had met with some MCAs from Kirinyaga County to fight Gachagua.

He admitted to meeting the Ward Representatives, but maintained that it was only to prepare them for their meeting with the DCP Party Leader.

“Yesterday evening, I had fruitful consultative engagements with elected members of the county assembly of Kirinyaga ahead of today’s meeting with our Party Leader H.E Rigathi Gachagua,” the statement read in part.

Malala added that the meeting was meant to draw people towards Gachagua, not away from him. He affirmed his allegiance to DCP.

“We are focused on enhancing political inclusivity as we prepare for the forthcoming general election. Chama iko imara. We scatter none but gather all,” he wrote.

The statement by Malala and the events that took place at Wamunyoro have left the Woman Rep with an egg on her face.

In the photo shared by Malala, the MCAs whom he met were part of the 10 hosted by Gachagua at his Nyeri home.

Gachagua explained he deliberated with the MCAs, including the Deputy Speaker of the County Assembly, about his upcoming tour of Kirinyaga County.

He welcomed the Ward Reps to the DCP party and urged them to remain steadfast in the face of any harassment and intimidation that could follow their political decision.

In her rant, Maina claimed that Malala paid some MCAs Ksh20,000 to attend a meeting whose agenda was to create a splinter group to fight the former DP.

” I am aware that yesterday, between 8.00 PM and 10.00 PM, you met a section of MCA’s allied to Gov. Anne Waiguru from Kirinyaga county at Golden Palm Kenol. I’m also aware that the agenda was to create a splinter group to fight H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH’s foot soldiers in that county,” Njeri Maina said.

“You facilitated the MCA’s in attendance with Kshs. 20,000; monies you obtained from persons who seek to derail the agenda of the people and the United Alternative Government,” she said.

Additionally, Cleophas Malala was accused of soliciting money for political favors during his tenure as secretary-general of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In her statement, Maina challenged Malala to a political confrontation, saying he would face her “where the rubber meets the road.”

She also issued a stern warning, stating that she would treat him with the contempt she believes he deserves going forward.

The Woman Rep vowed to deal with Malala accordingly and accused him of being a mole.

IG Kanja Confirms Arrest of Goons Behind Attacks on Tuju and Nyakera Businesses

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has confirmed the arrest of goons involved in the attacks on properties owned by former PS Irungu Nyakera and ex-CS Raphael Tuju.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, March 12, Kanja stated that the suspects would be arraigned in court over the raid of the Kisumu Hotel and the Karen home.

He reiterated that the police would not allow the use of goons ahead of the 2027 elections and vowed to take firm action.

“Goons are criminals, and we don’t have space for goons. We have arrested many, and we have taken many to court. The DCI is busy making sure that those who are not conforming are taken to court,” Kanja said.

On his part, the DCI Boss Amin Mohamed confirmed the arrests, adding that the investigative agency was reviewing footage shared to identify the suspects.

“We have taken note of the incidents that took place in Karen and Kisumu, and we have already arrested a couple of people who have already been arraigned before the court, and for some, we are in the process of identifying them,” Amin stated.

IG Kanja, who chaired a meeting with Police County Commanders, reminded them that they would be held responsible for any security lapses within their jurisdictions.

“I must mention, I have reminded them that they are responsible for the security and safety of their counties,” he stated.

The statement by the IG and DCI Boss came amid concerns raised over the spate of attacks carried out by goons across the country.

In an earlier statement, Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo questioned the rise of gangster culture in the country and a perceived tolerance by authorities.

Odhiambo warned that the country would easily decelerate to the level of Haiti, where criminal gangs run the country.

On the other hand, Tuju confronted several goons who stormed his property on Wednesday night and attempted to evict him.

Speaking after the incident, Tuju said that the goons were claiming they were representing the new owners of the property following an alleged auction.

“The person whom they told me they were working for is a person who claims to have bought this place. But all those are some of the things which are being prosecuted in court,” Tuju said.

IEBC Shortlists Candidates for ECVR Temporary Jobs

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday, March 12, confirmed that it had already shortlisted candidates for the 12, 520 jobs it advertised.

IEBC added that it had already communicated to the shortlisted candidates who had applied for the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) temporary jobs.

The Commission further revealed it had already set interview dates for successful applicants.

“Kindly note that for those who applied for the ECVR temporary jobs, the Commission has shortlisted candidates and communicated to the shortlisted persons. Interviews are currently ongoing,” the statement read in part.

IEBC explained that applicants who pass the interviews would be coached on how to undertake their set responsibilities.

“The Commission will communicate to the successful candidates and inform them when the training will begin,” the statement continued.

While advertising the vacancies, the electoral body stated that the opportunities were on a temporary basis and that successful applicants would facilitate the efficient and effective delivery of the ECVR exercise.

IEBC was looking to hire 10,780 registration clerks, 1,450 voter registration assistants, and 290 ICT clerks.

The vacancies were only open to Kenyans aged 19 years and above who attained a C- (minus) grade in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam.

In addition, IEBC required all applicants to have basic computer literacy and ICT skills. The jobs will only run for 30days.

IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon revealed that the Commission would require Ksh6.9 billion for voter registration ahead of the August 2027 polls.

Ethekon added that IEBC would also require Ksh12.4 billion for wages and Ksh6.2 billion to replace the KIEMS kits.

Tribunal Sets Date for Judgement on Sifuna’s Ouster as ODM Secretary General

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has set a date for when it will issue its judgment on the validity of Senator Edwin Sifuna’s removal as ODM Secretary General.

Speaking on Thursday, March 12, the PPDT Vice Chair Gad Gathu announced that the judgment on the matter would be delivered on March 26.

Gathu decided after hearing submissions from Sifuna’s lawyer and the representatives of ODM and the Registrar of Political Parties.

“We will deliberate on this matter and give a judgment on March 26 at 2.30 pm. That is the earliest available date taking into account the tribunal’s workload,” he stated.

The legal teams representing the claimant and the respondent requested that the judgment be made as early as possible, as it was a matter of urgency.

Sifuna, through his lawyers, argued that the decision by the National Delegates Council was irretrievably flawed and asked the Tribunal to declare it null and void.

The Nairobi Senator also asked the court to reward him with the costs of the petition.

Representing ODM, Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang’ argued that the decision to remove Sifuna from office was not final but a process in the undertaking.

“This process is continuous until the National Delegates Convention, which has the power to elect. That is why the Deputy SG is in an acting capacity,” he explained.

On the other hand, the Register of Political Parties argued that it had been prematurely taken to court since under Section 40 of the Political Parties Act, it had not made any decisions that would warrant it to be dragged to court.

Sifuna has continued to maintain that he is still the legitimate Secretary General of the ODM party, dismissing Catherine Omanyo’s appointment in an acting capacity.

ODM Leader Senator Oburu Odinga maintained that the party needed to uphold its values and that those speaking using a different voice needed to be punished.

Sifuna’s wrangles in ODM began when he declared that he would not support President William Ruto in 2027.

Kenya Met Warns of Flash Floods in Nairobi and Surrounding Counties

Sen.Hamida Kibwana Seeks Statement on Rising Sepsis Burden in Kenya

Senator Hamida Kibwana has requested a Statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Health regarding the growing burden of sepsis in Kenya, a life-threatening condition that continues to affect newborns, children and adults across the country.

The Senator noted that sepsis remains a serious public health concern that is often under-recognized despite its devastating impact on patients and families.

“Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that, if not detected and treated promptly, can lead to organ failure, septic shock and death. Despite its severity, it remains under-recognized, costly to treat, and a major contributor to mortality in our hospitals,” Senator Kibwana stated.

In her request, the Senator asked the Committee to provide updated national data on the prevalence and mortality rates of sepsis in Kenya, disaggregated by age groups including newborns, children and adults.

The Committee is also expected to outline measures taken by the Ministry of Health Kenya to strengthen infection prevention and control protocols in health facilities. This includes detailing strategies being implemented to address antimicrobial resistance, which continues to complicate the management and treatment of sepsis.

Further, the Senator asked the Committee to report on the status of neonatal and adult intensive care units across counties, including whether these facilities are adequately equipped with the necessary infrastructure, medical equipment and trained personnel to manage severe sepsis and septic shock.

Additionally, the Committee should explain government strategies aimed at improving early diagnosis and expanding laboratory capacity, enhancing the training of healthcare workers, and indicate whether there are plans to subsidize or cover sepsis treatment under the Social Health Insurance Fund in order to protect families from catastrophic medical expenses.

In a separate request, Senator Kibwana also sought a Statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources regarding concerns over lead contamination in soils and water in parts of Kenya.
