Bellingham ‘Irreplaceable’, Says Dortmund’s Kehl

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl on Wednesday said the club wants to hold onto English teen star Jude Bellingham “for a long time”.

Bellingham, 19, has already captained Dortmund, and an impressive World Cup in Qatar has several of Europe’s biggest clubs queueing up to secure his services.

Speaking with Sky Germany, Kehl said “there have been no inquiries at the moment” for the “irreplaceable” midfielder.

“If you saw him last weekend, with the focus and the passion that he has on the pitch (you’d see) that he is irreplaceable for us at the moment.”

Kehl said that Dortmund hope to keep Bellingham, but could not promise he will stay.

“From a sporting perspective, I would be thrilled if the boy would stay and would stay a long time at Borussia Dortmund.

“But I can’t predict how the situation will develop over the next few months.”

Kehl refused to speculate on reports in the German press that Dortmund had offered to make Bellingham the club’s best-paid player in order to keep him at the club.

“The lad is totally focused on football, on Dortmund,” he insisted.

Bellingham, who sat out Dortmund’s last-minute 2-1 win at Mainz on Wednesday night, after picking up a yellow card in Sunday’s win over Augsburg, will be free to return in Sunday’s clash with Leverkusen.

Canadian Embassy Wades Into Kenyan-Canadian Nurse Lucy Njeri’s Alleged Murder Plot

The Canadian High Commission in Nairobi says it is looking into an alleged murder plot against Kenyan-Canadian nurse Lucy Njeri.

Njeri, a former professional athlete based in Toronto, accuses her husband Nelson Ndereba of hiring hitmen and paying them Sh1.5 million to kill her when she arrived in Kenya in November last year, Nation reported.

The High Commission told Nation that they are in contact with Kenyan authorities to get more information on the matter and provide consular assistance to Njeri, who is set to fly back to Canada.

“On January 16, 2023, Nairobi became aware via local media that the subject was a victim of a murder attempt orchestrated by her husband, possibly in Canada. The husband would have paid a Kenyan hitman to kill the subject and dispose of her body in Kenya following her arrival in the country,” the High Commission said.

Njeri, who was an athlete for 15 years before studying nursing, said she is waiting for the outcome of an investigation into her claims.

“I have been living in fear, but I am certain the government will give me protection…I want to go back to continue doing what I love, which is helping people. I have already obtained restraining orders against him,” she told Nation.

Ndereba has denied his wife’s claims, saying he only hired the two men to pick her up when she arrived at JKIA from Canada. He said the men duped Njeri on the murder plot to extort her.

He further dismissed as doctored a WhatsApp conference call of him purportedly instructing a man identified as Swaleh on the killing and dumping of Njeri’s body.

He said the conversation was edited by Swaleh and is not a true account of their full conversation, including a third person.

“I can create that robot and it will respond as a human. We are in 5G technology and artificial intelligence. Anyone’s voice can be manipulated,” he said.

“A criminal can’t use another crime to evade the law. He played against me and my family. He robbed my wife, that’s a fact. He tricked my wife, that’s a fact. He raped my wife, that’s a fact. No matter how sweet he pretends to be. He has no escape. We are on his heels.”

Njeri said she will not step foot in the house she lived with her estranged husband in Toronto once she travels back.

Nation reports that DCI detectives visited JKIA last week to review CCTV footage from the night Njeri landed and left the airport aboard a black Toyota car.

Njeri said the hitmen confessed that her husband paid them Sh1.5 million to kill her and dump her body in Karura forest, but she paid them Sh2 million to spare her life.

“The instructions were so clear that they knew I had copies of my properties’ documents with me, which they also asked for as instructed. I pleaded with them to spare my life and they agreed on condition that I pay them Sh2 million,” she said.

Earth’s Inner Core May Have Stopped Turning And Could Go Into Reverse, Study Suggests

The rotation of Earth’s inner core may have paused and it could even go into reverse, new research suggests.

The Earth is formed of the crust, the mantle and the inner and outer cores. The solid inner core is situated about 3,200 miles below the Earth’s crust and is separated from the semi-solid mantle by the liquid outer core, which allows the inner core to rotate at a different speed from the rotation of the Earth itself.

With a radius of almost 2,200 miles, Earth’s core is about the size of Mars. It consists mostly of iron and nickel, and contains about about one-third of Earth’s mass.

In research published in the journal Nature Geoscience on Monday, Yi Yang, associate research scientist at Peking University, and Xiaodong Song, Peking University chair professor, studied seismic waves from earthquakes that have passed through the Earth’s inner core along similar paths since the 1960s to infer how fast the inner core is spinning.

The “LLR” laser has been installed on the summit of the Säntis (2500m) and was activated from June to September 2021. It was focused above a 124m high transmitter tower belonging to the operator Swisscom, equipped with a traditional lightning conductor.

What they found was unexpected, they said. Since 2009, seismic records, which previously changed over time, showed little difference. This, they said, suggested that the inner core rotation had paused.

“We show surprising observations that indicate the inner core has nearly ceased its rotation in the recent decade and may be experiencing a turning-back,” they wrote in the study.

“When you look at the decade between 1980 and 1990 you see clear change but when you see 2010 to 2020 you don’t see much change,” added Song.

The spin of the inner core is driven by the magnetic field generated in the outer core and balanced by the gravitational effects of the mantle. Knowing how the inner core rotates could shed light on how these layers interact and other processes deep in the Earth.

However, the speed of this rotation, and whether it varies, is debated, said Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, who was not involved in the study,

“The inner core doesn’t come to a full stop,” he said. The study’s finding, he said, “means that the inner core is now more in sync with the rest of the planet than a decade ago when it was spinning a bit faster.”

“Nothing cataclysmic is happening,” he added.

Based on new evidence from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, this illustration reflects the conclusion that the exoplanet LHS 475 b is rocky and almost precisely the same size as Earth. The planet whips around its star in just two days, far faster than any planet in the Solar System

Researchers will follow up this summer with additional observations with Webb, which they hope will allow them to definitively conclude if the planet has an atmosphere. LHS 475 b is relatively close, 41 light-years away, in the constellation Octans. [Image Description: Illustration of a planet and its star on a black background. Song and Yang argue that, based on their calculations, a small imbalance in the electromagnetic and gravitational forces could slow and even reverse the inner core’s rotation. They believe this is part of a seven-decade cycle, and that the turning point prior to the one they detected in their data around 2009/2010 occurred in the early 1970s.

Tkalcic, who is the author of “The Earth’s Inner Core: Revealed by Observational Seismology,” said the study’s “data analysis is sound.” However, the study’s findings “should be taken cautiously” as “more data and innovative methods are needed to shed light on this interesting problem.”

Song and Yang agreed that more research was needed.

Studying the Earth’s core

Tkalcic, who dedicates an entire chapter of his book to the inner core rotation, suggested the inner core’s cycle is every 20 to 30 years, rather than the 70 proposed in the latest study. He explained why such variations occur and why it was so difficult to understand what happens in the innermost reaches of the planet.

“The objects of our studies are buried thousands of kilometers beneath our feet,” he said.

“We use geophysical inference methods to infer the Earth’s internal properties, and caution must be exercised until multi-disciplinary findings confirm our hypotheses and conceptual frameworks,” he explained

“You can think of seismologists like medical doctors who study the internal organs of patients’ bodies using imperfect or limited equipment. So, despite progress, our image of the inner Earth is still blurry, and we are still in the discovery stage.”

Gov’t Evacuates Kenyan Woman Brutally Attacked in Albania

The government has evacuated a Kenyan woman who was admitted to a hospital in August last year after being brutally attacked in Albania.

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs said the plane carrying Joyce Aoko, her mother and her medical team left Albania on Wednesday and would land at Wilson Airport in Nairobi at around 6:30 p.m.

The department said Aoko, 22, was brutally attacked by unknown people while at her place of work in Tirana in August, but the Kenya Mission in Rome only relayed the information about the incident on January 11th.

“She was hospitalized for treatment and has been in critical condition ever since. Unfortunately, she needed specialized neurological care which was not available in Albania,” read the statement.

“While we continued to urge the government of the Republic of Albania to conduct speedy and thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to book, we found it in Ms. Aoko’s best interests, to bring her home to complete her journey of healing among her loved ones.”

Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu was expected to receive Aoko at the airport and take her to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital for further treatment.

“The State Department will offer free counseling services to the family before and after her arrival,” added the statement.

A medical report from Spitali Universitar 1 Traumes, where she has been undergoing treatment since August, shows she suffered several injuries, including fractures, and internal bleeding.

Early this month, Joyce’s mother Ruth Aoko told Nation that her daughter moved to the European nation in February last year to work as a croupier in a casino.

Prior to the attack, Ruth said her daughter complained that she was being stalked by a man only identified as a casino driver and that she felt threatened and unsafe.

“She told me that a driver was following her and that he wanted to have a romantic relationship with her, but she didn’t want him,” she explained.

Man City Face Arsenal Showdown, Liverpool Eye Revenge In FA Cup

Manchester City and Arsenal take a break from an intense Premier League title race this weekend – only to face each other in a heavyweight FA Cup clash at the Etihad.

Holders Liverpool will look to avenge their chastening recent defeat at Brighton, while Harry Kane could become Tottenham’s all-time top scorer.

We pick out some of the highlights ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round ties.

Man City aim to halt Arsenal’s momentum

Unexpectedly trailing in Arsenal’s wake in the Premier League, Manchester City have the chance to slow the leaders’ momentum in their first meeting this season.

City are five points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand, but the champions still have to play the Gunners twice in the league, making their FA Cup showdown a tantalising appetiser ahead of the main course.

Arsenal are riding high after victories over Tottenham and Manchester United in the league, while City stayed in touch after responding to a blast from Pep Guardiola by beating Tottenham and Wolves.

“At half-time the other day, Pep told us what he wanted, what he wasn’t happy with. As players we were not at our best and we had to correct that,” City defender John Stones said of his side’s fightback from two goals down to defeat Tottenham 4-2.

It would be a major statement of intent from Arsenal if they are able to put Guardiola in another grumpy mood with a victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Fatigued Liverpool on revenge mission

Jurgen Klopp said he “couldn’t remember a worse game” than Liverpool’s woeful 3-0 defeat at Brighton, a performance so wretched that Jordan Henderson labelled it a “really low point” in an already traumatic season for the Reds.

It is safe to say Liverpool’s trip to the Amex Stadium on January 14 left some painful scars on Klopp and company.

But the FA Cup offers them an unexpected chance to erase those bitter memories and get their campaign back on track.

Liverpool return to Brighton languishing ninth in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of the top four.

It is a remarkable fall from grace after they came within a whisker of winning an unprecedented quadruple last season.

Admitting Liverpool are still mentally fatigued from their bid for sporting immortality, Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara said: “It is not just about physical stuff, it is something psychological because we were so close to winning everything and we just touched it but sadly it went away.”

Kane eyes Spurs record

Harry Kane would love the chance to become Tottenham’s record goalscorer at Preston on Saturday.

Kane drew level with Jimmy Greaves on 266 Spurs goals when he netted with a superb strike in the team’s Premier League win at Fulham on Monday.

Greaves’ tally had stood untouched since 1970, but the England captain is now on the verge of sole possession of the record.

With fifth-placed Tottenham in the midst of a fight to climb back into the Premier League’s top four, Antonio Conte could rest his stars against second-tier Preston.

But, mindful of Tottenham’s surprise defeat at Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fifth round last season, Kane is keen to play.

“The FA Cup is important for us. It was disappointing to lose to Middlesbrough. We will see what the manager says but I will be ready,” said Kane, who is still looking to win the first major trophy of his career.

At Least 17 Wounded In DR Congo Bomb Blast, Official Says

At least 17 people were wounded Wednesday when a bomb exploded in a market in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, officials said, as the region continues to be plagued by insecurity.

The bomb exploded in the Macampagne market in Beni, where “at least 17 people were wounded and were taken to medical facilities,” said Tharcisse Katembo, head of the blue-collar district.

An AFP correspondent saw at least eight wounded, including three girls, being treated at the clinic.

The victims suffered injuries to their feet, arms and heads, the correspondent said.

“A young man left a green plastic bag… promising to come back and get it. About three minutes later, the bag exploded, injuring people including myself and the customers who had come to grind their cassava,” Dany Siauswa, manager of a mill business, told AFP.

Joseph Kakule, a local civil society leader, said “at least 19 people were injured” because of the shrapnel.

Beni region is one of the most volatile areas in the east of the DRC, which has been plagued by insecurity for nearly 30 years.

On January 15, an attack blamed on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group affiliated with Islamic State group jihadists, killed around 15 people in an evangelical Protestant church in Kasindi, on the border with Uganda.

The militia is accused of killing at least 23 villagers on Monday. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State group.

A joint Congolese-Ugandan military operation targeting the ADF in the region has been underway since late 2021.

But the attacks continue.

Khat Traders Protest Over High Tax In Mombasa

Khat (miraa) and muguka traders have protested plans by Mombasa county government to double cess charges on the two stimulants.

The traders are now seeking the intervention of Meru and Embu governors Kawira Mwangaza and Cecily Mbarire, as well as Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

According to the traders, Mombasa County, through a proposed Finance Bill of 2022/2023, will increase the cess charged on khat from a flat rate of Sh45,000 per vehicle to up to Sh80,000.

In the new cess schedule, the county intends to charge Sh80,000 for a lorry ferrying more than seven tonnes and Sh50,000 for a lorry weighing less than seven tonnes.

A three-tonne lorry will pay Sh30,000, a pick-up Sh20,000 and a handcart Sh10,000.

Another Sh1,500 shall be charged on muguka per box and Sh1,200 per sack of miraa if the bill is passed by the county assembly.

Muguka Association secretary-general Ian Mwobobia termed the increase exorbitant.

“It is public knowledge that muguka and miraa traders have been victims of harassment and punitive taxes by Mombasa County since 2018. The taxes increase by more than 150 percent every year. This is despite the county government imposing levies on offloading, transportation and trading,” Mr. Mwobobia states.

He said khat is overcharged by more than 100 percent when compared to other agricultural products.

Mwobobia warned that the hefty cess would kill many businesses not only in Mombasa but also Embu and Meru.

He noted that governor Abdulswamad Nassir had the courtesy to call traders for a meeting but none of their proposals were factored in the Finance Bill.

He said when the traders tried to reach out to the governor in December, he referred them to the County Assembly yet the Bill originated from the Executive.

John Mbijiwe a miraa trader from Meru pointed out that increase in taxes will kill their business.

Miraa farmers have been facing a lot of challenges such as ban of miraa trade in European markets, hence imposing extra charges will be killing it,” he said and called on the county government to review the levies downwards so that traders can remain in business.

President Ruto To Launch MV Uhuru II At Kisumu Port In May – PS Raymond Omollo

The Principal Secretary (PS)of interior Dr. Raymond Omollo has announced that President William Ruto in May this year will launch the MV Uhuru two at the Kisumu port, a key step towards boosting the blue economy in the region.

Omollo said the head of state will be accompanied by other regional Presidents.

He said the national government is committed to maximizing the potential of lake Victoria in the region and that commitments of modernizing piers in KenduBay Homabay and Mbita will be met.

According to Omollo, his department has also engaged the Kenya coast guard services to improve security in Kenya waters for smooth running of both transport and fishing activities.

MV UHURU II was built at the Kenya Shipyards Limited within the port of Kisumu by the Kenya shipyard limited, the 100-meter vessel with a capacity of carrying up to 22 wagons and an estimated capacity of 2 million litres of crude oil per trip is the first ship to be made in Kenya by Kenyans.

Ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta last year oversaw the floatation of the newly constructed MV Uhuru II vessel.

Kirinyaga: 14-Year-Old Boy Dies By Suicide

Graphi: THT

A 14-year-old boy from Kibingoti village in Ndia, Kirinyaga West, who was set to join secondary school after sitting for his KCPE exams in 2022 committed suicide for unknown reasons.

The boy’s father, James Gatithi, stated that he had cleared the boy’s fees and was preparing to send him to school when he learned of his untimely death.

“I stopped what I was doing and rushed back home to verify the news only to find that my son was no more. I had spoken to him a day earlier and he was in good spirits when I told him that I found a school for him,” said Gatithi.

The father stated that he had already paid the admissions fees and was given a receipt, which he gave to the boy.

Eunice Wanyaga, Gatithi’s sister, who joined the family in mourning, described the deceased as hardworking and obedient.

“The deceased and myself kept in constant communication and he never once told me that he was contemplating suicide. So his death came as a surprise to all of us,” said Wanyaga.

The boy’s body has since been moved to a nearby mortuary while his family prepares for his funeral.

The incident mirrors another case, reported in late December 2022 in the same area, where a grade four pupil committed suicide under unclear circumstances.

The high suicide cases in the area have raised concerns among residents and religious leaders alike.

Makau Mutua: We Will Stop At Nothing To Reclaim Our Victory

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga’s campaign secretariat spokesperson, Prof. Makau Mutua, has vowed that the coalition will reclaim their victory which he said was stolen in the August 9 General Elections.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen on Wednesday, Mutua said they will work within the constitutional framework as they fight to reclaim their stolen victory.

According to Mutua, the Azimio camp spent time gathering concrete evidence to back up their allegations against President Ruto.

“We believe that this election was stolen and rigged by UDA, IEBC in cahoots with some international interests and we have evidence of that,” he noted.

He added that the people of Kenya have a right to be angry as their will was subverted during the General Elections.

“If the will of the people is subverted by cartels of individuals working in cahoots with institutions within the state to steal an election and the people are not angry then something is wrong. We will stop at nothing to reclaim our victory.”

Makau also stated that the coalition is depressed because the results of the 2022 general elections surprised them.

According to Mutua, the signs of Azimio’s victory were so clear that even the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was taken aback when they were announced the winners.

” If we are honest even UDA were surprised that they were declared winners as they never expected it. UDA knew and everyone knew that Azimio was going to win,” Mutua said.

This comes on the heels of Raila’s public declaration that the Kenya Kwanza government does not have the mandate to rule and should resign.

He has also urged his supporters to oppose the UDA party’s rule, which he claims they oppose.
