Rwanda Says DR Congo Warplane Violated Airspace

Rwanda’s government said on Tuesday that a fighter jet from Democratic Republic of Congo had violated its airspace, prompting its defense force to fire in response.

A video shared widely on Congolese social media showed a projectile shooting toward an airborne military plane, before exploding in the air near the plane, which continued to fly. Reuters could not immediately verify the video.

The incident is the latest dispute between the two countries whose relationship has been strained by a rebel insurgency.

Congo, United Nations experts and Western powers have accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo, which seized several towns and villages in offensives last year. Rwanda has denied any involvement.

Regional leaders brokered an agreement in November under which the Tutsi-led group was meant to withdraw from recently seized positions by January 15 as part of efforts to end a conflict that has displaced at least 450,000 people.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said last week that the rebels had not fully withdrawn from those areas.

“The RDF (Rwanda Defense Force) fired at the fighter jet from DRC that violated Rwandan airspace in Rubavu — same area as previous violations,” Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said in a statement.

Makolo said the jet violated its airspace at 5:03 p.m. local time, prompting the government to take defensive measures against it. “Rwanda asks the DRC to stop this aggression,” she said.

When asked for comment, the Congolese government said it was preparing a statement.

In December, Rwanda said another fighter jet from Congo had briefly violated its air space.

An unarmed Congolese warplane also briefly landed at a Rwandan airport in November while on a reconnaissance mission near the border, in what Congo said was an accident.

Conflict-Torn DR Congo Gears Up For Papal Visit

In DR Congo’s bustling capital Kinshasa, the faithful are flocking to impromptu market stalls in churchyards to buy t-shirts and wax tissues adorned with the image of Pope Francis, ahead of the pontiff’s visit.

Papal souvenirs have become hot-selling items in the city ahead of the Argentinian pope’s four-day trip to the deeply religious central African country, which begins on January 31.

Many in the Democratic Republic of Congo view the papal visit as a chance to soothe tensions in the east, where M23 rebels have captured swaths of territory since last year and provoked a humanitarian crisis.

Berthe Baleweya, a woman who’d come to Kinshasa’s Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral to buy a Francis-themed wax cloth, told AFP that wearing the pope’s image would be a “great blessing”.

Emmanuelle Wemu, who runs a Catholic aid group, has already bought and tailored her wax print decorated with the pope’s face.

“I expect a message of peace from him, in this moment when the DRC is in turmoil,” she said.

Over one million worshippers are expected to turn out for an open-air mass in Kinshasa’s Ndolo airport on February 1, a sizeable portion in the megacity of over 15 million.

The DRC is a traditionally Catholic nation of over 90 million people, deeply impoverished despite vast mineral wealth.

 Conflict in the east

Pope Francis was scheduled to arrive in the DRC last July, but the trip was postponed over health concerns.

Many also speculated that escalating conflict in eastern Congo — where the pope had been due to visit — prompted a rethink.

The M23 rebel group, which is allegedly backed by Rwanda, has waged an offensive against the Congolese military and recently come within several miles of Goma, a commercial hub of over a million people and capital of North Kivu province.

Pope Francis is no longer due to go to eastern Congo, according to his new programme, but he will meet victims of the conflict while in Kinshasa.

Some are disappointed. Gelo Mandela, a youth coordinator in the diocese of Goma, said young people were despairing that the city was no longer on the itinerary. “We were prepared,” he said.

Aid worker Emmanuelle Wemu said she hoped the pope’s visit would bring reconciliation with Rwanda.

Diplomatic relations between the DRC and its smaller neighbour have plunged to rock-bottom since the eruption of the M23 crisis in late 2021. Rwanda denies backing the rebels.

Pope Francis’ security in Kinshasa also remains a concern, notably because of the threat of militias from the east.

The Allied Democratic Forces, which the Islamic State group claims at its affiliate, bombed a Pentecostal church in eastern Congo on January 15, killing 14 people.

The ADF has to date only operated in eastern DRC, over 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) from the capital.

Million-strong mass

A three-day period of prayers — known as a triduum — is planned at the Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral in the run-up to Francis’ arrival.

A vigil will also take place at Ndolo military airport on the night of January 31, ahead of the papal mass there the following morning, according to Father Camille Esika, a cathedral priest.

Between one and 1.5 million people are expected to celebrate mass at the eight-hectare (20-acre) site. Preparatory works are ongoing.

“That day, rain or no rain, there will be an event,” said Jesus-Noel Sheke, the project’s technical coordinator.

Across Kinshasa, banners and signs welcoming the pope already hang from buildings. His visit marks the first papal trip to the country since Pope John Paul II’s in 1985.

Justin-Marie Bayala, a teacher who attended a recent mass at the Notre-Dame du Congo, like many, evoked high hopes.

“We dare to believe that he will bring us lasting peace,” Bayala said.

New US Rape Lawsuit Filed Against Boxer Mike Tyson

A woman in New York state has filed a civil suit against Mike Tyson, accusing the former boxing champion of raping her in a limousine in the early 1990s, according to court filings.

The woman, who asked the court to remain anonymous, filed her complaint in early January under a temporary New York state law allowing victims of sexual assault to seek civil damages regardless of the statute of limitations.

Tyson spent three years in jail beginning in 1992 after being found guilty of raping model Desiree Washington, who was 18 at the time.

In a short affidavit dated December 23, 2022, the plaintiff states that she met the boxer at a nightclub “in the early 1990s,” then followed him into his limousine, where he allegedly assaulted her before raping her.

“As a result of Tyson’s rape, I suffered and continue to suffer from physical, psychological and emotional injury,” she said.

She is seeking $5 million in damages.

By late Tuesday, Tyson had not issued any public statement.

Born in Brooklyn in 1966, Tyson had a turbulent childhood before becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion in the 1980s, terrifying his opponents with his fury in the ring and a phenomenal punching power.

But after his prison sentence, he could not retain his titles.

In a notorious 1996 matchup, Tyson bit off a piece of his opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear.

Gripped by depression and addiction, he continued to make headlines, notably for a one-man show in which he described his life’s many ups and downs.

He has recently launched into the cannabis industry with his own brand of marijuana products, and hosts a podcast.

Uhuru Condemns North Kivu Killings, Calls For Peace

Written By Vanessa Kariuki ||

Former President of Kenya H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, the main man facilitating the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) peace process has condemned the rapidly deteriorating situation in North Kivu.

This is after fresh fighting broken out between a number of armed groups as well as between the FARDC and the M23.

Uhuru has called for an end to all hostilities, commitment to the Luanda Agreements, and a restart of the Nairobi Peace Process on talks to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He called out the fighting groups after reports that civilians were being killed by armed groups.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the fighting.

He also implores the DRC government and the international community to increase their aid to the IDPs.

Ten Hag Urges Rashford To Fulfil His Ambitions With Man Utd

Erik ten Hag has told Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United because he wants to transform them into the world’s best team.

United have failed to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and their last major trophy was the Europa League in 2017.

It is their worst trophy drought in 40 years, but United boss Ten Hag is showing signs of being able to rebuild the club after a positive start to his reign this season.

England forward Rashford has emerged as a key figure in United’s climb to fourth in the Premier League.

After two years of poor form, the 25-year-old has been revitalised by Ten Hag and United hope he will extend a contract that has 18 months to run.

French giants Paris Saint Germain were linked with Rashford last season but, on the eve of United’s League Cup semifinal first leg at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Ten Hag made a confident pitch to the forward to remain at Old Trafford.

“I think he understands Man United is his club. That’s first. But also, in this environment, in this team, I think he is playing his best football,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“He’s improving and that’s about him because he’s working on the good things. He’s giving 100 per cent energy, he has a good plan and I think also in this team he can bring in his qualities.

“So, this team can help him get in the right position and to score goals, where he is good at. If we want to get the success we want, we need him.”

Rashford has scored 17 goals in all competitions for United this season and shone for England at the World Cup in Qatar.

Asked about a potential revival of PSG’s interest in Rashford, Ten Hag said: “I hope that all our players get an interest from clubs because that means we do a good job, the team is outperforming, so that is what we are aiming for.

“Then, I would say this is the best place to be because we want to construct the best team, first of England and then in Europe and then in the world.”

Moshiri Says Everton Not For Sale But Close To Securing Stadium Investment

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has said the Premier League club is not for sale, but he is close to securing investment to help with building a new stadium.

Moshiri told the club’s Fan Advisory Board (FAB) that he is looking for help financing the construction of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in a video posted on the club website on Tuesday but recorded prior to their defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.

The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday reported that Moshiri had put the Merseyside club, who are languishing in the Premier League relegation zone and sacked manager Frank Lampard on Monday, up for sale.

When asked to comment on the Guardian report by Reuters, an Everton spokesperson said the video posted on the club website made Moshiri’s views clear.

“The club is not for sale but I have been talking to top investors, really quality, to bridge a gap (in funding) on the stadium,” Moshiri told the club’s FAB.

“I can do it myself and the reason I want to do it is to bring top sport investors to Everton. We are close to having a deal done. It is not selling the club at all. It is bringing more expertise in terms of sponsorship, commercial development and a lot of specialist sport investors have this pool of knowledge.

“The stadium is the best-performing area of our operation at the moment: on time, on budget. Once we get through the current underperformance fans can start dreaming with me. The stadium was never a luxury for Everton. For us, it was a necessity.”

Everton have played every season since 1954-55 in the top flight, but have won only three of their 20 leagues games this term and sit second bottom of the standings.

Moshiri sought to reassure fans that the team can still turn things around.

“The ambition for Everton is always to be part of the elite,” he added. “We were part of the elite. Our goal is never to be in the bottom three. Our ambition is to play European football.

“We haven’t succeeded today but we have laid the foundation to do it. We’ll get there but we can only get there together.”

Premier League Clubs Set New Record For January Spending

Premier League clubs have broken the record for transfer spending during the January window with a £440-million spree, according to sports finance experts Deloitte.

By 3pm GMT on Tuesday, the gross spend by Premier League sides had surpassed the competition’s previous high of £430 million in January 2018.

Funded by their new owners, Chelsea have fuelled the English top-flight’s record-breaking January.

The Blues have spent around £180 million this month, with Ukraine winger Mykhailo Mudryk joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal reportedly worth £88.5 million.

Chelsea also brought in David Fofana from Molde, Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile from Monaco, Andrey Santos from Vasco da Gama and PSV Eindhoven’s Noni Madueke.

Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV for £44 million in another of the big January deals.

There is still one week left before the January window closes, leaving room for the new record to rise even higher.

In the January 2022 window, Deloitte said Premier League clubs’ gross spend was £105 million with one week to go and finished up at £295 million.

“January 2023 has already surpassed the record spent during any previous winter window as Premier League clubs look to reinforce their squads ahead of a crucial second half of the season,” said Calum Ross, assistant director in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.

“The 2022-23 season has seen clubs invest heavily in their squads, and to date this season Premier League clubs have spent more than £2.4 billion on player transfers.

“New ownership and an availability of financial resources to pay significant sums to maximise performance continue to be key contributors towards record spending levels.

“While this level of spending illustrates Premier League clubs’ recovery post-pandemic, the importance of long-term financial planning and focus on financial sustainability should continue to be a priority.”

Deloitte said that gross spending by Premier League clubs for the 2022-23 season so far is £2.4 billion, with the new winter record following the record-breaking £1.9 billion spend last summer.

Prof. George Magoha: Kenya’s Education Czar

On March 27, 2019, former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Professor George Magoha as Education Cabinet Secretary.

The hefty, no nonsense professor had a reputation for upsetting things wherever he went.

He’d done it as vice-chancellor of the University of Nairobi and as chair of the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), where he’d recently been hired.

His tenure at the helm of the key docket will be scrutinized because he was in charge during a pivotal period in Kenyan education history.

The influence of Prof. Magoha could be seen throughout the education system, from the establishment of ECDE classrooms to the dissolution of university bodies he deemed improper.

Prof. Magoha trailed his guns (while serving as chair of Knec) to stop widespread exam cheating.

This was accomplished in collaboration with his similarly stern Cabinet giant, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, who oversaw the Education docket at the time.

They enlisted the help of the ICT ministry, and our exams have once more earned respect. The new administration has been admonished not to fail.

The implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC), which has elicited conflicting responses from stakeholders, has been fiercely defended by Prof. Magoha.

Despite the abuse it has received from its critics, the professor, whose area of expertise is medicine, has never shied away from asserting that “CBC is here to stay!”

His prowess in policy was put to test when Kenya suffered its share of the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the loss of one full education year.

The move recieved backlash from parents who thought children had lost valuable school hours and were exposed to early pregnancies and drugs.

Upon his exit, Prof. Magoha famously said parents will thank him for giving them ample time with their children.

“I know they say I make a lot of noise but parents will miss me because of the good work I’ve done for them. Don’t say that shule zifunguliwe warudi shule wanakula sana, treasure every moment you spend with them,” Magoha remarked on August 22, 2022.

Magoha had gotten into academic management and was a professor of surgery at Maseno University School of Medicine in Kisumu County before his tragic demise on January 24.

Accrington To Face Leeds In FA Cup After Beating Boreham Wood

Third-tier Accrington Stanley earned an FA Cup fourth-round clash with Leeds after beating non-league Boreham Wood 1-0 on Tuesday.

Tommy Leigh’s extra-time penalty settled a hard-fought third-round replay as Accrington reached the last 32 of the FA Cup for only the fourth time.

Shaun Whalley was fouled in the 97th minute and Leigh stepped up to book Accrington’s date with Premier League side Leeds.

It will be an uncomfortable trip to Accrington for Leeds on Saturday as the Yorkshire club have suffered a host of shock FA Cup defeats in recent years.

Crawley, Newport, Sutton and Rochdale have all knocked out Leeds in the last decade.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was in the crowd at Accrington to watch the League One strugglers edge past their National League opponents.

Boreham Wood were hoping to become the first non-league team to make the fourth round in successive seasons for 37 years.

But Lee Ndlovu missed their best chance, leaving National League side Wrexham as the only remaining club in this season’s FA Cup from outside the top four divisions.

Wrexham face Championship promotion chasers Sheffield United in the fourth round on Sunday.

Late Kimmich Stunner Saves Point For Bayern Against Cologne

A 90th-minute equaliser from Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich saved his side from a second loss of the season, as they drew 1-1 at home against a dogged Cologne on Tuesday.

Cologne, who put seven goals past Bremen on Saturday, picked up where they left off, pressuring Bayern and winning a corner after just three minutes.

Cologne defender Julian Chabot kept the ball in the air from the corner, superbly finding an unmarked Ellyes Skhiri at the far post for the Tunisian international to tap in from close range.

The visitors almost doubled their lead after 29 minutes but Bayern keeper Yann Sommer pulled off a brilliant double save, keeping out Skhiri and Denis Huseinbasic.

Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann made two changes at halftime, taking off Germany internationals Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry for Ryan Gravenberch and Kingsley Coman.

The change almost had an immediate impact, with Coman going close in the 53rd minute. He was kept out by an excellent low save from Cologne ‘keeper Marvin Schwaebe.

Cologne kept wave after wave of Bayern attacks at bay and looked set for their first win at Bayern since 2009, but midfielder Kimmich scored pulled back a point for the hosts in the last minute of regulation time.
