Senegal, Ivory Coast Win To Reach CHAN Quarter-Finals

A successful night for west Africa saw regional powerhouses Senegal and the Ivory Coast qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals on Sunday in Algeria.

Senegal, who began the final round in Group B lying second, trounced two-time former champions the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in the eastern city of Annaba.

The surprisingly comfortable victory elevated the Senegalese to first, and a last-eight showdown with the Group D winners, probably Mali, this Friday.

Ivory Coast were last in the standings as they kicked off against then-leaders Uganda, but a 3-1 triumph lifted them to second and qualification for the knockout phase.

Senegal finished with six points, the Ivory Coast and Uganda four each and DR Congo two in a competition confined to footballers playing for clubs in their country of birth.

The head-to-head rule separated the Ivorians and Ugandans and ensured all three west African contenders will be involved in the quarter-finals as Ghana have qualified from Group C.

After holding DR Congo and beating Senegal, a Ugandan side coached by Serbian Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic hoped to go beyond the group stage for the first time in six attempts.

But they began disastrously, allowing Sankara Karamoko and Vignon Ouotro to put the Ivory Coast two goals ahead after 27 minutes.

Moses Waiswa impressively converted a penalty on 34 minutes to halve the deficit, and Uganda missed chances before Aubin Kouame notched a third Ivorian goal 12 minutes from time.

Luck was not on the side of the east Africans as the woodwork denied Travis Mutyaba a late goal off a brilliantly taken free-kick.

In Annaba, DR Congo fell behind midway through the first half when Ousmane Diouf scored and they were reduced to 10 men before half-time after the red-carding of Kevin Mondeko.

Senegal sealed victory with two goals inside three minutes, from Pape Diallo and a Baggio Siadi own-goal, in the closing stages.

Raila: We Don’t Recognize Ruto As President

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga has declared that the Azimio coalition does not recognise William Ruto as Kenya’s President due to the alleged election rigging.

Speaking at a public rally in Kamukunji, Odinga stated that the coalition does not recognise the officials appointed by President Ruto, including his cabinet secretaries.

“We as Azimio reject the 2022 election results totally. We cannot and will not recognise the Kenya Kwanza regime and we consider the Kenya Kwanza government illegitimate. We do not recognise William Ruto as the president of Kenya,” he told his charged supporters who chanted “Ruto must go”.

The former Prime Minister claimed that irregularities and alleged electoral fraud marred the election process. Odinga stated that the coalition does not accept the IEBC results.

Furthermore, Odinga outlined a set of demands that he believes should be implemented in order to address the issues that have led to the current political crisis.

He has called for the repeal of high taxes, which he claims have a negative impact on Kenyans and make it difficult for them to make ends meet.

He also demanded that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) be reconstituted following extensive consultations with all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and other relevant organisations.

Odinga accused the IEBC and the Supreme Court of being central to the election rigging in 2022 and demanded an independent investigation.

“We demand the entire infrastructure and the records of the 2022 elections at the IEBC remain public and be audited by an impartial body,” he said.

Furthermore, Odinga demanded that the Kenya Kwanza government resign, claiming that they lack the mandate to govern the people.

He urged Kenyans to oppose President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government and fight for their rights and equal representation.

“We ask our people to say no to the UDA regime. This regime and its unfortunate and unfair policies must be resisted and the resistance starts today,” he said.

Joe Sang Appointed KPC Acting MD After Graft Charges Dropped

The Kenya Pipeline Company Limited (KPC) Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Joe Kimutai Sang as Acting Managing Director, effective immediately.

Sang succeeds Irungu Macharia, whose three-year contract expired on January 1, 2023.

According to Faith Bett, Chairperson of KPC, Sang’s brief but highly effective tenure at KPC (2016-2018) saw remarkable changes in the State Corporation’s management and performance.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors of KPC, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Kimutai Sang as acting Managing Director with effect from January 23, 2023,” said KPC Board Chairman Faith Bett Boinett in a statement.

Bett stated that she was a member of the KPC board that saw the company’s profitability rise steadily beginning in 2016 when he took over management, culminating in a record Profit Before Tax of KES 12.4 billion (KES 8.6 billion after tax) in 2018. This is the Company’s highest profit in its 45-year history.

However, since Sang’s forced departure in December 2018, the Company’s performance and profitability have taken a significant hit, resulting in a Profit Before Tax of KES 6.9 Billion (KES 1.6 Billion after tax) in 2021, a drop of more than 80% in four years. Bett attributed the drop to current employee dissatisfaction and low morale, which is reflected in the Company’s output.

In light of these developments, the KPC Board has determined that Sang is the best candidate for the position of Acting Managing Director, owing to his strong performance record with the company and his familiarity with KPC’s issues and processes.

Sang previously worked as a Project Economist for WHO-KEMRI, as a Financial Accountant for National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK), as a Management Accountant for Unga Limited, as Head of Finance for East African Breweries Limited (EABL) Subsidiary, as Head of Group Performance and Reporting for East African Breweries Limited (EABL) Group, as General Manager Finance & Strategy with KPC, and as Managing Director in April 2016.

Sang has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the Kenya Institute of Public Certified Accountants (ICPAK).

In December 2022, the Anti-Corruption Court cleared Joe Sang and five former managers of all charges in the KES 1.9 billion Kisumu Oil Jetty case.

The court upheld the decision of trial magistrate Victor Wakumile, finding that there was insufficient evidence to prove the criminal allegations of abuse of office, undertaking a project without prior planning, and willful disregard for rules governing the management of public funds.

Raila Odinga Arrives At JKIA Ahead Of His Kamukunji Rally

ODM leader Raila Odinga has arrived in the country ahead of his scheduled Kamukunji rally.

Raila was received by Azimio leaders and supporters at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Raila has been in South Africa for a week in his capacity as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

Captained by the ODM leader, the Azimio La Umoja brigade will head to Kamkunji for a mega rally to reveal shocking details about how his presidential victory was stolen.

Raila has convened the rally to allegedly give his supporters a ‘way forward’ following a dossier that opposition leaders say detailed how the opposition leader was cheated of his victory.

The meeting at the Kamukunji grounds is touted as a ‘people’s Baraza’ and will allow Raila to talk about the alleged dossier by an IEBC insider on how the polls were ‘manipulated’.

“He will discuss recent disclosures by a whistle-blower on the conduct of the 2022 General Election. He appeals to Kenyans to show up in large numbers at the Kamukunji baraza in the interest of the country,”  Dennis Onyango, Raila’s spokesman said.

Azimio had earlier promised to provide more details on the allegations that the elections were bungled and that Raila had won with 57.3 percent of the vote while Ruto garnered 41.6 percent.

MPs Boycott Induction Retreat, Protest CDF Fund Delay

A week-long parliamentary retreat in Mombasa was halted on Monday when lawmakers protested the delayed release of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

The legislators questioned the funding delay, claiming that schools reopened on Monday, leaving thousands of parents stranded who rely on the programme to keep their children in school.

“Bado mapambano, mapambano, mapambano,” chanted the MPs as they stormed out of the conference hall.

The MPs who demanded an audience with Treasury CS Njuguna Ndungu proposed that the funds used to fund their retreat be redirected to the CDF.

The lawmakers, led by Yatta MP Basil Ngui, demanded that the funds be released before the week-long induction could begin.

“Education supersedes everything, na sahii hakuna mambo ya induction, we want money… kama hamna pesa hamna induction,” Yatta MP Basil Robert Ngui said.

“Watoto wa maskini wako nyumbani na Watoto wa matajiri wako shuleni.. for all students to go to school, the government has to release CDF money.”

Beginning Monday, January 23, members of Parliament were scheduled to attend a week-long induction workshop in Mombasa.

They were to take on the role of committees in carrying out their mandate, as specified in the Standing Orders.

The purpose of the programme was to take participants through the role of Committees in the National Assembly and the roles of Members of Parliament in their respective Committees.

However, according to the National Assembly’s Twitter account, the retreat is ongoing and had only sort clarification over the delay and audience with the National Treasury.

“During the opening session, MPs present in the meeting sort clarification over the delayed disbursement of the National Government Constituency Development Funds for education bursaries even as schools open today across the country, MPs further sort audience with the Treasury.”

Prostitutes Gather In Davos For Annual Meeting Of Global Elite

The global elite tackling the world’s greatest problems – including gender inequality -at the Davos summit are fuelling a surge in prostitution in the Swiss resort town.

Demand for sex work skyrockets each year at the meeting of world leaders and business tycoons who jet in from all around the world to rub shoulders with each other.

Escorts are booked into the same hotels as high-powered bosses and their employees during the five-day summit, which started on January 16.

One sex worker named Liana said she dresses in business attire so she doesn’t stand out among the executives, despite prostitution being legal in Switzerland.

She told Bild she regularly sees an American who visits Switzerland multiple times a year and is among the 2,700 conference attendees.

Liana charges around €700 ($760) for an hour and €2,300 ($2,500) for the whole night, plus travel expenses.

The manager of one escort service in Aargau, 100 miles away from the summit, says she has already received 11 bookings and 25 inquiries – and expects many more to follow this week.

She told 20 Minuten: ‘Some also book escorts for themselves and their employees to party in the hotel suite.’

Salome Balthus, a sex worker and writer, posted on Twitter: ‘Date in Switzerland during #WWF means looking at the gun muzzles of security guards in the hotel corridor at 2 a.m. – and then sharing the giveaway chocolates from the restaurant with them and gossiping about the rich… #Davos #WEF.’

The 36-year-old is staying at a hotel near Davos throughout the summit but refused to reveal who the influential clients are.

She cautioned: ‘Believe me, you don’t want to get into litigation with them.’

In 2020, an investigation by The Times found at least 100 prostitutes travel to Davos for the summit according to a Swiss police officer.

One official driver for the forum said he picked up one sex worker who claimed she had been forced by her ‘boss’ to sleep with an older client at a delegates’ hotel.

Among the topics up for discussion at this year’s summit are the Ukraine war, global inflation rates, climate change and inequality.

Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska will give a rare international address today at the annual gathering.

The Covid-19 pandemic torpedoed the event for the past two years but a springtime version was held eight months ago.

Dozens of sessions on Tuesday will focus on issues as diverse as gender parity, the return of manufacturing, the green transition, efforts to end tuberculosis and the intersection of food, water and energy, which will feature actor Idris Elba.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He are also among the speakers.

Nearly 600 chief executives and more than 50 heads of state or government are expected but it is never clear how much concrete action emerges from the elite event.

The elite gathering is regularly skewered by critics who argue that attendees are too out-of-touch or too profit- or power-minded to address the needs of common people and the planet.

Throughout the week, critics and activists will be waiting outside the Davos conference centre to try to hold decision-makers and business leaders to account.

It started on Sunday, when dozens of climate activists, some with clown makeup, braved snowfall to wave banners and chant slogans at the end of the Davos Promenade, a thoroughfare now lined with storefront logos of corporate titans like Accenture, Microsoft, Salesforce, Meta, as well as country ‘houses’ that promote national interests.

Greenpeace International also blasted use of corporate jets that ferry in bigwigs, saying such carbon-spewing transportation smacks of hypocrisy for an event touting its push for a greener world.

It said over 1,000 private-jet flights arrived and departed airports serving Davos in May.

Forum president Borge Brende acknowledged on Sunday that some government leaders and chief executives fly in that way.

‘I think what is more important than that is to make sure we have agreements on how we, overall, move and push the envelope when it comes to the green agenda,’ he said.

Former NHIF Boss Free As DPP Haji Drops Ksh. 1.1 Bn Graft Charge

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has dropped Sh 1.1 billion in corruption charges against former NHIF CEO Geoffrey Mwangi.

In his ruling Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate, Victor Wakumile allowed the prosecution’s application to withdraw the graft charges against Mwangi under section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

” I find that sufficient grounds have been laid in support of the application to withdraw the charges. Therefore the case against Mwangi
to be withdrawn,” Wakumile ruled.

The magistrate also urged the DPP to review the entire case against 17 other co-accused persons.

He however granted the DPP 15 days to also review charges against CEO Simeon Ole Kirgotty and 16 others.

The decision by the DPP to withdraw the charges was prompted by a letter by Lawyer Migosi Ogamba of Mwangi which invited the DPP to find that there was no evidence to charge the former CEO.

The former CEO was charged with the loss of public funds relating to the award of an NHIF contract to Web Tribe Limited for the provision of integrated Revenue collection.

Webtribe Limited and it’s directors Danson Muchemi and Robert Muna were also charged together with Mwangi, Kirgotty, and 16 others over the loss if Sh 1.1 billion at NHIF.

The DPP later on June 8, 2020 dropped charges against Webtribe and its directors after reviewing the file.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr Training Two Years Above His Age

Cristiano Ronaldo’s son, Cristiano Jnr, has already made a big impression in Saudi Arabia and is reportedly training with players who are two years older than him.

Ronaldo senior, 37, penned a lucrative two-and-a-half-year deal with Al-Nassr on New Year’s Eve but had been prevented from making his official debut in the Middle East due to a ban he received during his final months at Manchester United.

After weeks of waiting, Al-Nassr’s new superstar finally made his Saudi Pro League bow on Sunday in Al-Nassr’s 1-0 win over Ettifaq – but the Portuguese forward’s eldest son has been hard at work since joining his father out in Saudia Arabia.

Cristiano Jnr had been playing in the Manchester United academy while his father was at the club, however, the 12-year-old is now training in Saudi Arabia, according to a new report from The Sun.

The report outlines that Cristiano Jnr is training at the Mahd Academy, which is the national sports centre in Saudi Arabia. The youngster, who could have reportedly returned to Real Madrid to link up with their academy, is said to be training in the age group two years above him already.

But while Cristiano Jnr has caught the eye in Saudi Arabia, it was his father who took centre stage on Sunday night as he finally made his official Al-Nassr bow.

Just days after he scored twice in an enthralling exhibition match against Paris Saint-Germain, Ronaldo lined up alongside his new team-mates in the Saudi Pro League for the first time in the 1-0 win over Ettifaq.

Ronaldo failed to get on the scoresheet but he was handed the captain’s armband and played the entire game for the league leaders, who grabbed a vital win courtesy of a strike from Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca.

Sunday’s win was Ronaldo’s first taste of the Saudi Pro League after he penned a deal worth an estimated £173million-a-year: a figure that makes him the highest-paid footballer in history.

Al-Nassr, who have seen their social media following skyrocket since snapping up Ronaldo last month, are currently one point above Al Hilal, the reigning Saudi champions, in the current domestic standings.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who claimed he turned his back on European football as he had accomplished everything he set out to achieve, will be eager to overthrow Al Hilal this term to add another domestic title to his glittering resume.

Ronaldo and Al-Nassr return to action later this week when they face Al-Ittihad in the semi-finals of the Saudi Super Cup on Thursday night.
