Microsoft Reportedly Laying Off Thousands Of Staff This Week

Microsoft is reportedly planning to announce the slashing of thousands of roles at the company this week, joining the wave of mass layoffs at tech giants including Amazon, Meta, and Twitter.

About five percent of Microsoft’s existing workforce may be laid off, which could mean over 10,000 jobs cut at the company. according to Sky News.

Bloomberg also reported that a large number of layoffs announced in Microsoft’s engineering divisions on Wednesday, “significantly larger” than the one percent cut to its workforce the company underwent last year.

In an interview with CNBC earlier this year, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella said the tech industry should brace itself for two more years of struggle before seeing growth again.

Mr Nadella said Microsoft wasn’t “immune to the global changes,” including “real recession” in several parts of the world.

The current challenges faced by the tech industry are caused by the “cool down” of the demand that was previously spurred by the Covid-19 pandemic, he said.

“We did have a lot of acceleration during the pandemic, and there’s some amount of normalisation of that demand. And on top of it, there is a real recession in some parts of the world,” the Microsoft chief added.

It remains unclear how many positions at the company from different parts of the world, including the UK, are likely to be affected in the looming layoffs.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.

As of June 30 last year, the company had about 221,000 full-time employees, including 122,000 in the US and 99,000 in other parts of the world.

The looming mass layoff also comes a week ahead of Microsoft’s planned quarterly earnings report that would inform the company’s investors more on its financial performance.

The tech giant’s shares have dropped nearly a quarter in the past year and changed very little at $240.35 at close time in New York on Tuesday.

The layoff also comes following job cuts at several tech giants, including Amazon which cut over 18,000 jobs earlier this month citing an “uncertain economy”.

Amazon’s announcement came after massive layoffs at other Big Tech companies including Twitter, Facebook parent company Meta and other Silicon Valley firms.

Earlier this month, Salesforce and Vimeo also announced they were laying off employees.

Entering 2023, Salesforce said it is cutting about 10 percent of its workforce – representing about 8,000 jobs – and closing some of its offices, while Vimeo said it would reduce staff numbers by 11 percent.

More than 180,000 employees in over 1,100 tech companies have been laid off since 2022, according to the website layoffs.fyi, which tracks job cuts in the industry.

Nobel Laureat Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Evasion

A Philippine court acquitted the journalist and her news outfit Rappler of tax evasion.

Maria Ressa appears and sounds as if she is on top of the world, which is understandable given the magnitude of her victory.

She discusses the “weaponization of the law” against her in an interview with the BBC, and how it took more than four years to get to this point.

“This is a day that we had anticipated would come sooner,” she said via zoom from Manila.

“And you know, it went down to these three things, facts, truth, and justice. That is who won today.”

During the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippine government accused Ms. Ressa and Rappler of avoiding tax payments when they raised cash through a partnership with international investors.

Ms. Ressa and Rappler both refuted the allegations.

Rappler was one of the few Philippine news outlets to publicly criticize Mr. Duterte and his policies.

According to the Philippines’ National Union of Journalists, the tax evasion case exemplifies an escalating use of the law for retaliation and intimidation of journalists and civil society.

But it hasn’t been an easy road, and there is still a long way to go. Ms. Ressa is well aware of the difficulties she will encounter, yet she finds motivation in those who have gone before her.

“You know, Martin Luther King said, sure, it will take time,” she explained. “But when I read through the ruling, I realized there was no cause to take us to court… we’re not tax evaders – we’ve never been… This was a crucial day since it would have determined the direction of the Philippines.”

Maria Ressa’s legal problems started while Mr. Duterte’s administration was in power and continued into the current President Ferdinand Marcos Junior’s time.

Leipzig’s Werner Has No Regrets Over Chelsea Move

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner said on Wednesday he did not have any regrets over his decision to move to Chelsea rather than German giants Bayern Munich.

Speaking ahead of Leipzig’s home match with table-topping Bayern on Friday, Werner — who won the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea — told Germany’s Sportbild “I think the path you take is always the right one in the end.”

Werner moved to Chelsea in 2020 for a reported fee of 53 million euros as one of Europe’s hottest striking prospects, having scored 34 times with 13 assists in 45 competitive fixtures with Leipzig in 2019-20.

Werner had opted for Chelsea ahead of Bayern, but spent two unhappy seasons in London before returning to Leipzig last August.

“Up until now, I would have had two coaches at Bayern who would have been very good for me: Hansi Flick, with whom I get on well, and Julian Nagelsmann, my former coach at RB.

“But I think it’s a better idea not to regret it.”

Werner scored just ten times in 56 league appearances with Chelsea and was benched for much of his second season by then manager Thomas Tuchel.

“I wasn’t part of the coach’s plan anymore. You have to accept that and find a way to deal with it.”

Werner said he would advise team-mate Christopher Nkunku — the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer this term with 12 goals in 15 games — on the potential pitfalls he could face at Chelsea should he move there as is widely rumoured at the end of the season.

“I can tell him about both positive and negative experiences, should he make the change.

“At a club like this (Chelsea), you don’t play like you do at RB Leipzig because there’s more competition.

“(That’s) not just on a sporting level, but also on a different level mentally.”

Werner, who missed the World Cup due to a torn ligament, said he was “ready to return against Bayern” on Friday.

Werner played for the first time since November 2 in a 4-0 friendly win over Czech side Mlada Boleslav last Saturday.

“It was important for me to play once more after the injury, even if I wasn’t 100 percent and could feel my foot a bit after such a long absence.”

Werner said Leipzig — who are third in the table six points adrift of Bayern — were “on an even footing in terms of our quality” with the league leaders.

“We don’t even know what we’re made of — we can do a lot more.”

Suspect In Murder Of City Consultant Killed On Saturday Arrested

The main suspect behind the gruesome murder of 81-year-old city consultant Dr. Gerishon Mwiti, who was hacked to death on January 14, 2023, at Thigiri ridge in Westlands Nairobi County, has been arrested.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, Bernard Kioko, who was a gardener at Dr. Mwiti’s home has been arrested moments ago at Mabatini in Mathare settlement, after being on the run since committing the murder most foul last Saturday.

According to the deceased’s son Daniel Mwiti, he found his father’s lifeless body sprawled at their garden bearing a deep cut at the back of his head.

“This is after an operation that lasted more than 24 hours after the suspect engaged detectives in a hide-and-seek game from Mwingi in Kitui county until his arrest this afternoon deep in the Mathare settlement,” the DCI added.

The operation was conducted by a contingent of officers drawn from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau based at Nairobi regional command, DCI Gigiri and officers from Huruma police station.

Detectives are currently interrogating the suspect for more details into the unfortunate murder.

Kenyan Teenager Linked With Move To Sheffield United

After spending all his budding career at Chelsea, Kenyan winger Silko Thomas Otieno is on the verge of completing a move to English Football League (EFL) Championship side Sheffield United.

The 18-year-old is currently on trial at Sheffield and recently featured for the Under 21 side as they registered a 3-3 draw against Wigan with the Blades currently topping the Professional Development League.

With Chelsea having a bloated squad in their first team with at least three players in every position, Otieno’s chances at the West London club look increasingly slim and it’s understandable for him to cut a career elsewhere.

The Blues had displayed signs of faith in Otieno after he was called up in the first-team training ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Manchester United back in October as a number of the first-team players were handed a rest following their midweek draw against Brentford.

Otieno has been a Chelsea player through and through after joining the Under-10s and has been handed promotions up till the Under 21’s where he has featured in a number of games in the Premier League 2.

The pacey winger signed a professional contract at Chelsea in September 2021 but is now looking for a new club after it appears Graham Potter does not see a future for him at first-team level.

The midfielder in a previous interview spoke of his versatility which convinced Chelsea to sign him up for their academy but added that he is comfortable in the advanced roles.

“When Chelsea spotted me I was a midfielder wearing the number eight shirt at Carshalton. Once I joined the academy the only position I can’t remember playing in was as a goalkeeper.

I decided I liked to play in a forward position to get goals and create assists because that was the most enjoyable thing as a youngster. I’m definitely happy with the decision to play as a forward,” said Otieno.

Brian Mathews Named StarTimes/SJAK December 2022 Finest

National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) men’s handball team tactician Brian Mathews has been named the StarTimes/SJAK Coach of the Month of December 2022.

Mathews, who also doubles up as the NCPB ladies team head coach led the millers to the East and Central Africa Club championship title after defeating Tanzanian champions Ngome 24-18 in the title deciding match played in Zanzibar last month.

For his exemplary performance, Mathews was awarded Ksh 100,000, a StarTimes 55-inch smart television set and a personalized trophy thanks to title sponsor StarTimes Kenya.

Speaking while receiving the award at the NCPB headquarters, Mathews expressed his gratitude for the recognition.

“This award has come as a pleasant surprise to me. I understand I am only the second coach to win this award and that only gives me more motivation to better the handball sport in the country. I gathered much experience while trading my skills in Demark as a player, now it’s time for me to pass down the knowledge to the younger generation,” he said.

StarTimes Kenya head of Public Relations Alex Mwaura lauded the coach for his achievement while also praising the award initiative which seeks to recognize excellence as far as coaching is concerned.

“Every time we see a team register impressive results, there must be the coach at the helm of it all. This is the reason we have decided to focus on them in collaboration with SJAK. We are more than confident that this award will act as a motivation to coaches in various sporting disciplines and as a result, we are likely to witness an improvement of teams’ performances in general,” he said.

To win this award, Mathews closely pipped his counterpart Jack Ochieng who also led Nairobi Water queens to the ladies title in the women’s category of the same regional competition.

Other coaches who made it to the nomination list for their impressive performance in various assignments during the month of December include Kenya’s Tong- IL Moo-do team head coach Master Ibrahim Mchumba who led team Jasiri to retain the Mombasa Open Tong- IL Moo-do championship overall title, Meshack Senge of Strathmore Gladiators hockey team, Curtis Olago of KCB rugby team, KPA basketball coach Anthony Ojukwu and his counterpart Sadat Gaya who heads Thunder basketball team.

Mathews, a former Kenyan international player made the decision to transit to coaching in 2020 after a long stint of club competition in the Danish handball federation leagues.

Pronto Denies Acquiring Iconic Hilton Hotel In Nairobi

Pronto Restaurant, a popular Nairobi dining establishment, has issued a statement denying recent rumours that it had purchased the prestigious Hilton Hotel building.

According to Pronto Restaurant’s management, a fake poster had been circulating online, implying that the restaurant had taken over the iconic hotel’s premises.

The restaurant’s management has since clarified that this information is completely false and that business will continue as usual.

The company’s current branches are Pronto Restaurant Wabera Street, Pronto Restaurant Standard Street Branch, Pronto Restaurant Aga Khan Walk Branch, Pronto Restaurant Kimathi Street Branch, and Pronto Coffee House, according to the statement.

The opulent hotel, which the government owns 40.57 percent of, ceased operations in December.

The hotel claimed that COVID-19 presented previously unheard-of challenges to the hospitality industry, and that the decision to cease operations has no immediate connection to the pandemic.

Kiambu: Man Arrested For Impregnating His 15-Year-Old Daughter

A 47-year-old man from Kagambwa village in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, is being held after allegedly impregnating his minor daughter.

David Mbugua, a father of three, is said to have routinely enjoyed sex with his biological daughter, during which he could entice her with various behaviours.

However, his early last year’s sprees proved more fruitful for him, as after allegedly committing the heinous act, his 15-year-old girl conceived, resulting in a successful delivery on December 28, 2022.

According to the minor’s mother, Virginia Muthoki, she began suspecting the two due to her husband’s suspicious behaviour and occasional outings with the daughter.

Following a series of suspicions, Muthoki revealed the situation to Mbugua, who threatened her with legal action if she revealed the ordeal.

“He has always threatened me whenever I raised the issue with him. He often asked me; you want to take me to jail? I’m asking the government to help me as I am currently helpless,” said Muthoki.

Mbugua is said to have asked Muthoki to help him take the minor to his sister in Naivasha, where she gave birth.

Despite this, Muthoki, with the help of a few neighbours, mobilised and informed sleuths who arrested the suspect before fleeing to safer grounds for fear of mistreatment if the man was released.

Neighbors who spoke to journalists described the act as one that could only be performed by a beast.

The embarrassed residents urged police and other law enforcement agencies to teach the suspect a lesson in order to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
