Cabinet Approves Establishment Of Ultra-Modern Bomas International Convention Centre

The Cabinet on Tuesday, August 8 approved plans to expand the Bomas of Kenya in Lang’ata, Nairobi into an ultra-modern facility touted to be the biggest convention centre in Africa.

The features of the new facility were captured in a despatch shared by State House Spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed, hours after President William Ruto chaired a Cabinet meeting at the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County.

Dubbed the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC), the convention will feature a conference centre, presidential pavilion and at least five hotels.

The expansion of the current Bomas of Kenya facility was for the purpose of growing Kenya to being a preferred destination for global meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

“To position Kenya as the destination of choice for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism, and to cement her place as a diplomatic and commercial hub, Cabinet approved the establishment of the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC).

“This State initiative, fifty years after the groundbreaking of Kenya’s first international convention centre (KICC), is expected to further the growth of conference tourism, hospitality, and event and aviation industries as set out in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” read the despatch in part.

The approval sets the stage for the construction of the facility which will sit on 82 acres at the current Bomas of Kenya grounds.

The Ministry of Tourism previously announced plans to expand Bomas into a 15,000-capacity exhibition space featuring a 10,000-delegate capacity conference centre, five luxurious hotels with a total capacity of 2,000 beds, presidential pavilions, VIP pavilions, fully furnished apartments, coffee shops and business centres among others.

According to a past report by The Standard, the hotels will range from 2-star to 7-star and will cater for all categories of exhibitors and conference tourists, with Kenya revealed to be using South Africa’s Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the World Travel Market Centre in London, United Kingdom (UK) as benchmarks.

The Bomas centre will be strategically placed, 11 kilometres from the city centre and just a stone’s throw away from Nairobi National Park.

Former Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on October 28, 2021, announced plans to transform the Bomas of Kenya into an ultra-modern facility through an infrastructural improvement programme that will transform the facility into a modern Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions (MICE).

“We are in talks with the National Treasury with a view to finding ways of supporting Bomas of Kenya to become a modern MICE facility to boost cultural and business tourism,” he said while Bomas marked its 50th anniversary.

Bomas of Kenya was started by the Government of Kenya in 1971 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tourism Finance Corporation (TFC), a company established to Preserve, Maintain and Promote the Rich Diverse cultural values of various ethnic groups of Kenya and to act as a tourist attraction centre.

It has proudly welcomed over 10 million visitors and its amphitheatre, termed one of the largest auditoriums in Africa with a 2,000 maximum capacity, has been a source of nationwide attention during the general elections, serving as the nation’s vote-tallying centre for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Raila Responds To IG Koome Over Allegations Of Hiring Dead Bodies

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio, has slammed police Inspector General Japheth Koome over allegations that the opposition hired dead bodies to represent victims of police brutality.

Raila stated that the bodies in question had gunshot wounds and dead certificates to prove the cause of death.

“I am very disappointed to see a statement from Inspector General Police Mr. Koome saying that we hired dead bodies to accuse police of brutality. I do not know which world he lives in. The bodies which were buried had bullet wounds in them. The death certificates also confirm the cause of death. These are people killed by goons masquerading as police officers,” Raila responded.

He asserted that he will not rest until the perpetrators pay.

This comes just a few hours after Police Inspector General Japheth Koome made claims senior society members have been parading bodies to implicate police officers as being behind the killings.

“How can these people be leaders of the society? As police, we have the role of protecting lives and property. The propaganda will not dishearten us,” Koome claimed.

At the same presser, IG Koome also called out Azimio over their plan to file a police brutality lawsuit at the International Criminal Court (ICC) claiming that the move is aimed at demoralising police officers.

Kakuzi Ventures Into Macadamia Oil Production To Meet Demand

Written By Lisa Murimi

Kakuzi PLC is set to introduce Macadamia Cold pressed cooking oil products and contribute to the National Edible Oil Crops Promotion Project.

This rebranding aligns with the national agricultural transformation agenda, highlighting sustainability and climate-smart agriculture.

During the launch, Phillip Kello Harsama, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Crop Development, stated that the government is committed to agricultural advancement through private partnerships to achieve rapid results.

The government plans to invest over KSh 40 billion in agricultural transformation initiatives, including the provision of sunflower and canola seeds, coconut seedlings, and loans to farmers.

This aligns with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda priorities.

The new Kakuzi brand symbolizes a shift to contemporary Super Foods production for both local and international markets.

Alongside the rebranding, Kakuzi has launched a range of private-label consumer products for the domestic market, including macadamia-based items.

Kakuzi’s Chairman, Nick Ng’ang’a, highlighted the growth trajectory of the company, mentioning the expansion of avocado and macadamia orchards to meet demand. The firm plans to convert former pineapple fields into avocado orchards by 2026.

Kakuzi’s Managing Director, Chris Flowers, emphasized the importance of the brand’s promise and clarity in defining its identity.

The introduction of the Kakuzi branded range of macadamia products for the domestic market contributes to this transformation. Kakuzi aims to deliver nutritious, responsibly grown, and affordable food.

As part of enhancing shareholder returns, Kakuzi plans to invest in retail property development, creating Kakuzi Farmers Market to sell its value-added products.

The firm is also finalizing plans for a full-scale Blueberries production venture and has commissioned a Macadamia Oil Extraction Plant to meet growing demand and address challenges in the international macadamia market glut.

The rebranding and expansion efforts indicate Kakuzi’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and value-added products.

Milk Production To Be Doubled In Five Years — President Ruto

Milk production will be doubled in the next five years to expand opportunities for farmers.

President William Ruto said the Government has put in place a solid plan that will see production increase from 5.2 billion litres to 10 billion litres a year.

He argued that milk is one of the highest influencers of income in Kenya, generating at least Sh200 billion a year.

He explained that the Government will modernise Kenya Cooperative Creameries plants and install milk coolers countrywide so that more milk can be processed.

“We want to fetch more from value-added milk. Our farmers are not thriving because they have been selling raw milk,” he said.

He said the Country has enough facilities to create powder and long-life milk to ensure the surplus milk does not go to waste.

The President noted that farmers will be at the centre and front in the new plan to give the sector a new lease of life.

“We will also rid the market of brokers so that farmers can earn maximum returns from their milk.”

The President spoke on Tuesday in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, where he commissioned the Modernised Kenya Co-operative Creameries Kiganjo Factory.

The plant is now equipped with new product lines to process camel milk and drinking water.

Present were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, Governors Mutahi Kahiga (Nyeri), Abdi Guyo (Isiolo) and MPs led by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.

Other interventions outlined by President Ruto include the removal of taxes on animal feed imports — including yellow maize — and the reduction of the cost of semen.

He said subsidised fertiliser will be instrumental in increasing the production of animal feeds.

The President also instructed KCC to minimise expenses shouldered by the farmers to increase their profits.

Mr Gachagua said the Government is committed to protecting dairy farmers from exploitation.

“We will have a conference in September to deliberate on issues affecting dairy farmers,” he said.

Governor Guyo said the launch of the camel milk processing line at KCC Kiganjo will transform the lives of the people of Northern Kenya.

Pastor Jailed For 50 Years Over Defiling Two Minors Using The Name Of God

Ngong pastor who defiled two minors 11 years ago claiming that he was transferring holy spirit power to the children through the act, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Milimani principal magistrate Caroline Njagi on Tuesday sentenced James Njuguna Kuria, the pastor to 50 years in jail in count one and 20 years in count two.

She however directed that the sentences should run concurrently meaning he will only serve the longest jail term which is 50 years.

Last week, the man of God was convicted of defiling the children aged 11 and 14 using religious connotations and manipulations.

The pastor faced two counts of repeatedly defiling the children who were congregants at his church.

In her ruling, Njagi said evidence adduced in court proved the case against the pastor beyond reasonable doubt.

“In the circumstances, it is my finding that the prosecution evidence in this regard is watertight on counts 1 and 2 herein,” he said.

“I find that the two minors were truthful witnesses, and their evidence was corroborated by medical evidence. I find that the prosecution proved their case to the required standard against the accused person on the charge of defilement in counts 1 and 2. The accused person is convicted as charged as per the provisions of Section 215 of the CPC.”

Njagi said that the accused person in his defense and throughout the trial raised issues of mental illness however, the medical report ruled contrary to his allegations.

74-Year-Old German National Jailed For 81 Years For Child Pornography, Trafficking

A 74-year-old German citizen has been sentenced to serve 81 years in jail by a Nairobi Court after he was convicted of several counts of defilement and child pornography.

Thomas Scheller, 74, was convicted of seven offences after the court found the prosecution had established a solid case against him proving that indeed he was guilty.

Milimani principal magistrate Caroline Njagi sentenced Scheller to 30 years in jail in count one for defilement, count two and three to 15 years in prison each and counts 4,5,6 to 7 years in jail.

“The accused having been convicted and sentenced, he will be entered into the Sexual offenders register “, the magistrate ruled.

In his mitigation, the accused had alleged that he was framed and pleaded for lenient sentence.

Scheller was charged in 2020 and denied bail after the prosecution opposed saying the case against him was a serious offence and he was a flight risk.

On May 26, 2020, Scheller was charged with the offences in addition to being in Kenya illegally and child trafficking.

It is alleged that between March and April at Nyalenda in Kisumu Central, he defiled a 13-year-old child.

He was also charged with two counts of showing a pornographic video to boys.

“On dates between the months of March and April at Nyalenda in Kisumu, he unlawfully and intentionally exposed a child aged 13 years to an indecent audiovisual,” the charge sheet read.

It is alleged that he recruited, transported and harbored a 13-year-old child for purposes of exploitation by means of fraud.

Scheller was charged with three counts of defiling three minors, the youngest being 10, by sodomising them. He was also charged alternatively with committing an indecent act with a minor.

According to Scheller, he told court he wanted to help the child and the mother agreed but anything else was a lie.

However, the state said the accused was a child molester.

Scheller was arrested after the police had trailed him for months, documents show.

It is alleged he escaped police in Kwale and fled to Kisumu where he committed the offences before he was arrested in Nairobi.

Police said he was arrested outside the German Embassy in the company of one of the victims.

East and Southern African Nations Engage in Discussion to Eradicate Antimicrobial Resistance

A critical regional forum addressing the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has brought together health officials and policymakers from 16 East and Southern African nations in Nairobi.

The purpose of the “Regional Meeting to Review Antimicrobial Stewardship Guidelines and Implementation of AMR Surveillance,” which began today and runs through August 12th 2023, is to develop cooperative tactics and a coordinated approach to battle the evolving danger of AMR and protect public health.

The need of coordinated measures to address AMR was emphasised by Cabinet Secretary of Health Nakumicha S. Wafula in her introductory remarks.

In order to effectively address this global problem, the Cabinet Secretary further emphasised the significance of ongoing cooperation with foreign allies and the global community.

The Cabinet Secretary thanked the East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for organising the workshop and emphasised its importance in combating AMR collaboratively.

The regional gathering provided an essential forum for the discussion of best practises, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.

Finland Scholarship Row: Brave Kabarak University Graduate Lectures Mandago, Leaders

Written By Lisa Murimi

A recent Kabarak University graduate has captured the public’s attention by fearlessly confronting Uasin Gichu County leaders over the Finland scholarship row.

The graduate, widely shared on social media, confronted Senator Jackson Mandago, Governor Bii, and Deputy Governor Barorot during a public event, leaving many both surprised and inspired.

“I schooled with your children. But they’re now in the United Kingdom. The rest of us remain here despite our parents raising millions to your scholarship program.”

“You are very mean with the truth, you keep lying, you smile at us, with a very smooth tongue and a very soft face that looks like it’s very innocent, but you keep on lying and lying,”

Emotions ran high as parents, whose children are studying in Finland and Canada under the Uasin Gishu County overseas study program, held a meeting with the county leadership.

The meeting, which is the first since the scandal emerged, saw the parents lecture Governor Jonathan Bii, his deputy John Barorot and Senator Jackson Mandago over alleged mismanagement of the program.

Kenyans praised the brave youngster on Twitter for speaking truth to power and exposing the apparent deceit.

Her impassioned statement, delivered with a mix of frustration and determination, struck a chord with many in the audience and drew considerable notice on social media.

Colombia Edge Jamaica 1-0 To Set Up England Quarter-Final

Catalina Usme scored the only goal as Colombia kept their Women’s World Cup charge on track Tuesday by beating Jamaica 1-0 to secure a maiden quarter-final against European champions England.

The South Americans failed to qualify for the 2019 tournament, but have taken huge strides since, topping their group in Australia and stunning world number two Germany along the way.

The 25th-ranked Colombians carried the form into a sold-out Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, grinding down a resolute and physical Jamaica side who had not conceded a goal all tournament.

Colombia’s intense, attacking ethos under coach Nelson Abadia finally paid dividends in the 51st minute when the dangerous Usme got the breakthrough with a composed finish inside the box to unlock a previously impenetrable defence.

It set a cagey game alight and sent the pumping pro-Colombian crowd into deafening delirium, with the Reggae Girlz unable to find a way back.

Colombia will now play England in Sydney on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals after the Lionesses came through a gripping penalty shootout against Nigeria.

Four years after crashing out of the 2019 tournament with three heavy defeats, 43rd-ranked Jamaica, like Colombia, also came to Australia with low expectations.

And despite the crushing defeat, they will leave with their heads held high after clean sheets against France, Panama and Brazil.

In front of riotous fans, who booed whenever Jamaica touched the ball, both sides pressed early in a stop-start opening that saw several players go down under heavy challenges.

The chances were few and far between in the opening 20 minutes with Colombia’s Diana Ospina having the best – and only – shot on target, but it didn’t have enough power to trouble the keeper.

But the South Americans began to find some rhythm as their supporters urged them on and the opportunities started flowing, with Leicy Santos and Usme both going close.

With Colombia assuming control, Jamaica resorted to some clumsy challenges and Chantelle Swaby and Drew Spence both picked up yellow cards in a tough-tackling half.

The breakthrough came six minutes after the restart with teenage World Cup debutant Ana Guzman pinging a beautiful ball to Usme who took one touch before side-footing home.

Fired up, Jamaica almost had an immediate reply with Jody Brown’s shot cleared off the line in a frantic goalmouth scramble that then saw Colombia break on a counter-attack which nearly led to Real Madrid sensation Linda Caicedo doubling the score.

Behind for the first time at the World Cup and facing the exit door, Jamaica abandoned their defensive posture and threw players forward frantically looking for the equaliser.

Spence almost grabbed it with a header that spun just wide.

But despite giving everything, Colombia hung on to keep their World Cup dream alive and almost scored a second at the death when Santos’s header hit the post.
