Indian man admits plot to kill US-based Sikh separatist leader

BBC -An Indian man accused of plotting to kill a Sikh separatist leader in New York City has pleaded guilty to three criminal charges in a federal court.

Nikhil Gupta, 54, admitted to murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He faces up to 40 years in prison.

The target of the alleged plot, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, is a US citizen who advocates for Khalistan. The Khalistan movement calls for an independent homeland for Sikhs in India.

Prosecutors allege Gupta was directed by an Indian government official to carry out the plot. India denies having anything to do with the alleged plot to kill Pannun.

“Nikhil Gupta plotted to assassinate a US citizen in New York City,” said US attorney Jay Clayton.

“He thought that from outside this country he could kill someone in it without consequence, simply for exercising their American right to free speech. But he was wrong, and he will face justice.”

Pannun said in a statement to the BBC that “Nikhil Gupta’s guilty plea was judicial confirmation that India’s Modi government orchestrated a structured murder-for-hire assassination plot on American soil”.

India has labelled Pannun a terrorist, though he denies this, stressing he is merely an activist.

Sikhs are a religious minority that make up about 2% of India’s population. Some groups have long called for a separate homeland for Sikhs.

The movement is not prominent in India now with most major political parties, including in Punjab – where Sikhs make up the majority of the population – opposing such calls. But supporters in the Sikh diaspora have continued to advocate for Khalistan.

Prosecutors alleged that Gupta was recruited by an Indian government employee in May 2023, adding that the pair met in Delhi to discuss the potential assassination.

The officer, Vikash Yadav, worked for Indian government’s Cabinet Secretariat, which houses India’s foreign intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing, according to the indictment.

Yadav has not been arrested in connection to the charges.

The indictment alleged that, at Yadav’s orders, Gupta contacted a man to hire someone to carry out the killing in New York.

The man, a government informant, introduced Gupta to a second person who presented himself as a hitman but who was actually an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration officer, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors alleged that Yadav gave Gupta information about the murder target, including his home address in New York and his phone numbers, which Gupta then fed to the purported hitman.

The target was an associate of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, also active in the Sikh separatist movement, who was murdered by a masked gunman in Canada in June.

Shortly after Nijjar’s murder, Gupta allegedly told the purported hitman that Nijjar was “also the target”, adding “we have so many targets”, prosecutors said.

Canada then accused India of being linked to both Nijjar’s murder and to the murder plot against Pannun. India denied any involvement in both cases.

China to scrap tariffs for most of Africa from May: President Xi

Beijing’s scrapping of tariffs for all but one African country will start May 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday, according to state media.

China already has a zero-tariff policy for imports from 33 African countries, but Beijing said last year it would extend the policy to all 53 of its diplomatic partners on the continent.

China is Africa’s largest trading partner and a key backer of major infrastructure projects in the region through its vast “Belt and Road” initiative.

From May 1, zero levies will apply to all African countries except Eswatini, which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

China claims the democratic island as its own and does not rule out using force to take it.

Many African countries are increasingly looking to China and other trading partners since US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs worldwide last year.

Xi said the zero-tariff deal “will undoubtedly provide new opportunities for African development”, announcing the date as leaders across the continent gathered in Ethiopia for the annual African Union summit.

President Ruto meets African Development Bank President Sidi Tah amid rising debt concerns

President William Ruto met African Development Bank (AfDB) President Sidi Ould Tah on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

The two leaders reviewed ongoing joint programmes and projects in the pipeline to support Kenya’s development agenda.

The government spokesperson said they noted that Thwake Dam is 90 per cent complete. They also discussed water and sanitation schemes, roads and the continued expansion of Konza Technopolis. The government says these projects will support growth and improve livelihoods.

“H.E. President William Ruto met African Development Bank President Sidi Tah on the sidelines of the 39th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They reviewed ongoing joint programmes and projects in the pipeline to support Kenya’s development agenda,” the government spokesperson said.

“The leaders expressed satisfaction with the 90% progress at Thwake Dam. Discussions also covered water and sanitation projects in small towns, road infrastructure development, and the continued expansion of Konza Technopolis.”

But the meeting has raised fresh questions at home. Many Kenyans believe the talks could lead to more borrowing at a time when the country already faces heavy debt pressure.

Kenya’s public debt stands at around 65.7 per cent of GDP in 2026. That is lower than 72 per cent in 2023, helped by a stronger shilling. However, the figure has risen sharply from 42.2 per cent in 2013.

According to the AfDB, Kenya’s external debt is over Ksh5.5 trillion, while domestic debt stands at over Ksh6 trillion. Multilateral lenders, including the AfDB, account for more than half of external loans.

Fitch Ratings expects debt service costs to reach Ksh683 billion this financial year, or 3.7 per cent of GDP. The agency also forecasts a fiscal deficit of 5.8 per cent, above the government’s 4.7 per cent target. These figures show the strain on public finances.

Commissioner Muthama and Senator Kavindu Family Lay to Rest Their Son Moses Muthama Nduya in Machakos

The family of Commissioner Johnson Muthama and Senator Agnes Kavindu on Saturday laid their son, Moses Muthama Nduya, to rest in a solemn ceremony at Tala, Machakos County.

In an emotional statement, Senator Kavindu described the burial as “a deeply painful and emotional moment for my family and me, yet we were profoundly strengthened by the overwhelming support and solidarity shown by leaders, friends, and wananchi who stood with us during the burial ceremony.”

The ceremony drew a host of national and county leaders, including members of Parliament, fellow Senators, and representatives of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Hassan Omar Hassan, UDA Secretary General, represented President William Ruto, who conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

“There are few sorrows as profound as that of a parent losing a child; it is a burden no heart is ever prepared to carry. In this hour of grief, may you be surrounded by compassion, upheld by faith, and strengthened by the love of those who stand with you,” the President said through his representative.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula hailed the late Moses as an enterprising, diligent, and hardworking young man who embodied the values of his father.

Speaking during the send-off, Wetangula said, “Together with other leaders, and in my capacity as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Service Commission, we joined the family of Commissioner Hon. Johnson Muthama and Senator Agnes Kavindu for the final rites of their son, Moses Nduya Muthama, in Tala, Machakos County.”

He added, “I encouraged the family to find strength in the Lord during this difficult time, as losing a child brings immense pain to the family. I also urged leaders to promote unity and speak about peace, especially during this time of rising political tensions. May the soul of Moses rest in eternal peace.”

Among those present were UDA National Organising Secretary Vincent Kawaya, Senator Veronica Maina, and several county and national figures who joined the family to pay their respects.Kavindu concluded her tribute to her son with a heartfelt farewell: “Rest in eternal peace, my son Moses. Your light will forever remain in our hearts.”

British couple held by Taliban describe ‘culture shock’ returning to UK

BBC -A British couple detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan for seven-and-a-half months have described a “huge culture shock” after returning to the UK.

Peter, 80, and his wife Barbie Reynolds, 76, said they were never told why they were being held, nor why they were released in September.

The couple, who have run a charity programme in Afghanistan for almost two decades, told BBC Newsnight the last five months in the UK have been “totally different”.

“What we’ve been through changes us. What we’ve been through in the last, well decades, but also obviously last year, it reshapes you,” said Barbie.

“You think differently and you see things differently than we did when we used to live here before.”

While living in their long-term home in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan province, Barbie said she wore a Hijab at all times and was not allowed out in public without her husband.

“The freedom here is very striking; people are free to wear what they want, go where they want,” she said.

They were arrested on 1 February 2025 after taking a chartered flight from Kabul to Bamiyan province, along with friend Faye Hall and their translator who were later released.

The Taliban said the pair had broken Afghan laws and were released after judicial proceedings – but has never disclosed the reason for their detention.

They were released through Qatari mediation but Peter said the reason for their detention was “a complete mystery”.

The couple, who married in Kabul in 1970, previously said they were detained in 10 different prisons and at one point thought they would be executed.

“I wasn’t sure whether Barbie was alive,” Peter said.

Barbie said she shared a prison block with 240 women but there were “many more blocks with women, with 40 children”.

“It was cramped, there were about seven toilets for that number of people. They tried to fix the showers but they broke again and the drains were always overflowing,” she said.

During Ramadan, Barbie had one meal a day but after Ramadan, they were given the same amount of food but just divided at lunchtime and dinner.

“I became very malnourished and I got anaemia – Peter said I aged 20 years when I next saw him,” she said.

“Sometimes I could hardly walk and I became really quite poorly.”

Taliban officials maintained the pair received adequate medical care during their detention and that their human rights were respected.

One of the prisons Peter and Barbie were held in was Pul-e-Charkhi, a notorious maximum security prison outside Kabul that is home to some of the most dangerous criminals.

At one point they were held in basement cells with no windows for two months. For the final weeks of their detention they were moved above ground, where they say they had access to better food and were treated with kindness.

Peter said he was “shocked” when he saw Barbie after months apart.

“She was no longer a 76-year-old, she was in her 90s,” he said, adding that his wife was unable to steady herself to walk.

They previously said they wished to “hug” the people who decided to jail them and forgive them.

“I’d want them to know I’m not holding a grudge against them,” Peter said.

He added that he would love still to work with the government of Afghanistan “for the good of the people of the country”.

They sent a message to Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were arrested and detained in Iran in January 2025.

“Hang in there, don’t lose your hope,” said Barbie.

‘We Are Masters of Politics’, DP Kindiki Dismisses ODM Fush for DP Seat

Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki has said that he is not fazed by the Orange Democratic Movement’s sudden appetite for the seat he occupies.

The Deputy President said he was a master of politics and would not engage carelessly. He spoke in Kirinyaga, where Mt. Kenya leaders loyal to the broad-based government maintained that his seat was not up for grabs.

Speaking after an impromptu inspection of the Maragwa-Ichagaki-Gamburi road that stalled in 2020, the Deputy President, who was accompanied by local leaders allied to the broad-based government, said he was not shaken by recent developments that have seen ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga say they are gunning for his seat in power negotiations with UDA.

“Do not be unsettled by small things you hear here and there. We are masters of politics and we do not speak carelessly, we speak at the right time,” Kithure Kindiki, Deputy President, stated.

However, the local leaders who had accompanied him were not as gracious, saying the country’s number two political position was not for the taking during power talks.

“We hold the number two position. Do you want it taken away? Has ODM not just arrived?” Mary Wathera, MP for Maragua, stated.

The leaders insisted that both the presidency and deputy presidency already have substantive holders and are not subject to political bargaining.

In Kericho County, Kenya Kwanza leaders led by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya accused the opposition of undermining government development efforts.

“We want to tell those opposing the two-term agenda that the nation cannot be driven by empty rhetoric. They are not talking about what Ruto has done,” Erick Mutai, Kericho Governor, stated.

“We want issue-based politics focused on uplifting ordinary Kenyans,” Soipan Tuya, Defence Cabinet Secretary, stated.

In Isiolo County, during campaigns for the Isiolo South by-election, leaders allied to the ruling coalition urged the opposition to give the government space to deliver on its agenda.

They criticized opposition figures, accusing them of politicizing even sensitive issues such as drought.

“We are telling the opposition they have no agenda. Let the government do its work,” Farouk Kibet, Presidential Aide, stated.

The leaders also took aim at former President Uhuru Kenyatta, urging him to emulate other retired heads of state and refrain from active political engagement.

“Please, Uhuru Kenyatta, behave like other retired presidents and allow President Ruto to do his work,” John Bwire, MP for Taveta, stated.

‘You’re Either with us or Against us, We Have No Time for You!’, Kalonzo Warns Kitui Leaders Supporting UDA Government

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a stern warning to a section of Kitui County Assembly leaders allied to the United Democratic Alliance, accusing them of undermining the will and interests of the people.

The move is seen as Kalonzo cracking the whip on dissenting voices in his political backyard. Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has rallied the Maa community to back the United Opposition, saying unity is key to unlocking their development agenda.

The United Opposition is ramping up its grassroots campaign. Gachagua toured Enesampulai in Narok County, urging the Maa community to support the opposition and his presidential ambitions. He said the Maa have been sidelined by President William Ruto’s administration.

“This is your party for forming the next government. I’m calling on all Maasai from Laikipia, Laisamis, Kajiado and beyond, this is your vehicle for change,” Rigathi Gachagua, former Deputy President, stated.

Gachagua accused Narok leaders allied to President Ruto of prioritizing politics over the region’s development needs. He pledged to improve infrastructure and the livestock sector.

“We’ve discussed roads and I will deliver. We will also prioritize livestock and hides and skins so our farmers do not incur losses,” Gachagua stated.

He spoke during the homecoming of DCP Deputy Secretary General Martin Ole Kamwaro.

In Kitui County, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka attended the renaming of Kyuso Girls to Mama Pauline Kalonzo Girls School. He warned local leaders allied to the government that their actions betray the region’s interests.

“You are either with us or against us. I’m watching all of you. If you are not on our side, you will be swept away. Read the mood of the people,” Kalonzo stated.

Kalonzo also expressed confidence that Kenyans in the diaspora will back the United Opposition. He accused President Ruto’s government of overtaxing citizens and stalling key development projects in Kambaland.

“Anyone earning a salary here is surrendering nearly half of it in taxes. Even this road has delayed, and the one he promised here must be delivered urgently,” Kalonzo added.

“Ignore Gachagua’s ‘Intimidation Tactics’!” CS Ruku tells Mt Kenya People

Public Service Cabinet Secretary, Geoffrey Ruku, has urged residents of Kiambu County not to be intimidated by impeached Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua and what he termed as his “opposition brigade.”

Speaking during a public the wedding of Lari MP Kahangara in Kiambu on Saturday, CS Ruku said the people of the Mt Kenya region should remain steadfast in supporting the government, dismissing opposition rhetoric as empty political posturing.

“We will not allow leaders who were in government and failed to deliver to mislead wananchi,” Ruku said.

“The Kenya Kwanza administration remains focused on transforming livelihoods, creating jobs, and strengthening public service delivery.”

Ruku vowed to defend the Kenya Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto until 2032, saying the government is committed to fulfilling its development agenda across the country.

He accused opposition leaders of attempting to rewrite history, noting that many of them previously held senior positions in government but did not implement meaningful reforms.

“They cannot claim to offer solutions now when they had the opportunity to serve and did little,” he added.

Taking direct aim at Gachagua, Ruku criticized what he described as “chest-thumping politics” over perceived political dominance in the Mt Kenya region.

“He has been going around claiming that he owns Mt Kenya politically, yet the people have shown otherwise,” Ruku said, citing the recent Mbeere North by-election as evidence of shifting political ground.

In the closely watched contest, Leo Wamuthende emerged victorious and now serves as the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North Constituency, defeating candidates allied to Gachagua’s camp.

“That outcome sent a clear message that leadership is earned through service and development, not intimidation or political noise,” Ruku asserted.

The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering youth, strengthening human capital development initiatives, and improving service delivery within the public sector.

He urged Kiambu residents to rally behind national unity and development-focused politics rather than divisive narratives.

“Our focus is on delivery. We are asking Kenyans to judge us by our work,” Ruku said. “We will continue to protect and defend this administration as it works to uplift every region of our country.”

Kyuso Girls School Rebrands, Named as Mama Pauline Kalonzo Girls – Kyuso.

In what he described as special moment for him and his family, today in Kyuso, Mwingi North Constituency-Kitui County, Kalonzo expressed gratitude after witnessing the rebranding of Kyuso Girls School which was renamed as Mama Pauline Kalonzo Girls – Kyuso.

“We celebrate your love for the education of the Girl Child in Kenya. Thank you for making us generational evidence of this love. We love you” Kalonzo stated in what he termed as ceremonial plaque. He said that he was reminded of a fundamental truth that has anchored his entire life in public service maintaining that education is not a privilege for the fortunate few but a birthright of every Kenyan child.

‎”I come from humble beginnings; from communities just like these, where the journey to school was often longer than the lesson itself, where books were treasures shared among many, and where every educated child carried a village’s collective dream. It is this lived experience that taught me that quality education must never be the monopoly of urban centres or affluent neighbourhoods. Every child whether born in rural villages or bustling cities deserves an equal shot at excellence, opportunity, and dignity” Kalonzo added.

Kalonzo said that, when a village decides that every girl will complete her education; when families refuse to let poverty dictate a child’s destiny; when neighbours pool resources to keep just one more student in class, that is when transformation truly begins.

‎”The renaming of this school is not merely about honouring one woman. It is a declaration by an entire community that they are invested in the education of their daughters. It is a collective affirmation that education remains the most powerful weapon against poverty, inequality, and hopelessness” Kalonzo stated.

‎In his heartfelt message to his dear wife, Kalonzo acknowledged the honour placed upon her by the community, Mama Pauline as great respect and love that reflects the light that she have been to countless girls across the nation as well as her quiet strength, unwavering belief in the power of educating the girl child, and her tireless advocacy as the foundations upon which this legacy stands.

“You have walked this journey with grace, purpose, and a mother’s heart that sees possibility in every young girl who dares to dream. This school now bears your name because you earned it through decades of selfless service. I am forever grateful to call you my partner, my pillar, and the heartbeat of our family” Kalonzo praised his wife.

“Mama Pauline Kalonzo Girls – Kyuso now stands not merely as a school, but as a covenant between generations: that we will fight for quality education for all; that we will ensure no child is left behind; and that the girl child will always have champions in her corner” Kalonzo added.

‎The historic rebranding of the school on Valentine’s Day was graced by Makueni County Women Representative and Wiper Women Patriots Patron Mama Rose Museo.

‎Also in attendance were Kitui County Governor HE Dr Julius Malombe, Kitui County Women Representative Irene Kasalu, Mwingi North MP Paul Nzengu, the EALA MP Kennedy Kalonzo who represented teh Kalonzo family, section of Kitui MCAs among other leaders.

Russia killed opposition leader Alexei Navalny using dart frog toxin, UK says

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was killed using a poison developed from a dart frog toxin, the UK and European allies have said.

Two years on from the death of Navalny at a Siberian penal colony, Britain and its allies have blamed the Kremlin following analysis of material samples found on his body.

There is no innocent explanation for the toxin, called epibatidine, being found in samples taken from Navalny’s body, the UK Foreign Office said.

Speaking from the Munich Security Conference, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Only the Russian government had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin against Alexei Navalny during his imprisonment in Russia.”

While Cooper announced the findings, a joint statement was issued by the UK, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Cooper met with Navalny’s widow Yulia Navalnaya at the conference this weekend.

“Russia saw Navalny as a threat,” Cooper said at the event.

“By using this form of poison the Russian state demonstrated the despicable tools it has at its disposal and the overwhelming fear it has of political opposition,” she added.

In the statement the allies said: “Only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin to target Navalny during his imprisonment in a Russian penal colony in Siberia, and we hold it responsible for his death.

“Epibatidine can be found naturally in dart frogs in the wild in South America. Dart frogs in captivity do not produce this toxin and it is not found naturally in Russia.

“There is no innocent explanation for its presence in Navalny’s body.”

The Foreign Office said the UK has informed the Organisation on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons of Russia’s alleged breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said his country “pays tribute” to Navalny, who he said was “killed for his fight in favour of a free and democratic Russia”.

Navalny – an anti-corruption campaigner and Russia’s most vociferous opposition leader – died suddenly in jail on 16 February 2024 at the age of 47.

In 2020 he was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent. He underwent treatment in Germany, and was arrested at the airport upon his return to Russia.
