Kenyan Avocados Sold At The Largest Fruit Market In East China

Kenya-grown fresh avocado fruits sourced from listed agribusiness firm Kakuzi Plc arrived at East China’s largest fresh fruit wholesale market this morning.

The premium fruits, which arrived in Shanghai, China, on Sunday evening, were stocked at the Shanghai Huizhan Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market just one day after phytosanitary and customs clearance for the inaugural consignment.

Kakuzi has completed the import voyage that began last week for the inaugural export consignment and has become the first African firm to officially undertake commercial sales of Avocados on Chinese soil.

When confirming the market diversification milestone, Kakuzi Plc Managing Director Chris Flowers stated that the company’s marketing agents in China, Halls Fresh Produce, had acknowledged the early morning stocking of Hass Avocado fruits following the mandatory quarantine period.

The stocking comes after a thorough phytosanitary inspection by the Chinese National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) at Shanghai International Airport and customs clearance by the People’s Republic of China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) yesterday.

Following the successful delivery of the first consignment, Mr Flowers confirmed that a second consignment will be picked and prepared for export to China.

“Discerning Chinese consumers have woken up to the market availability of the freshest Kakuzi Hass Avocado. This development officially marks the entry of Kenya as an exporter of quality avocado fruits to China and completes the export loop that commenced last Thursday,” Flowers said. He disclosed, “This is a true tree-to-shelf story as the fruits were handpicked at our Murang’a County orchards and packed for export last Thursday. They were airlifted to China on Saturday, cleared for sale on Tuesday afternoon and stocked in a wholesale market Thursday morning.”

The inaugural shipment, according to Mr Lifan Yu of Halls Fresh Produce, the market agent for Kakuzi in China, will strengthen bilateral trade and social relations between the Chinese and Kenyan people.

“The Chinese community has been a true friend to the people of Kenya, and this inaugural shipment of fresh avocado fruits will cement these relations. Kakuzi is a quality grower of horticultural produce, livestock and forestry products for the Kenyan and export markets. Lifan said that the Halls and Kakuzi collaboration will help deepen the Chinese Avocado market. He added, “At Halls Fresh Produce China, we have been promoting ready-to-eat avocados for several years. Chinese consumers are now more familiar with our quality and premium products as quality, sustainability, and traceability are at the heart of what we do.”

The import of fresh Avocado superfood from Kenya to China follows the signing of two commercial protocols in early January (2022) to facilitate bilateral trade, primarily the export of avocados and aquatic products from Kenya to China. The protocols were signed in Mombasa, Kenya, by Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Peter Munya, and the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Mr Zhou Pingjian.

Kakuzi PLC has been working on the necessary preparations for its entry into the Chinese market since January of this year. The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) and the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) have approved fifteen (15) orchards, nine (9) packhouses, and one (1) fumigation facility, including Kakuzi’s orchards and packhouses, to export fresh avocado to China. Following the stringent audits, the GACC recently published a list of authorized orchards, packing houses, and fumigation facilities to export fruit to China.

Win For Raila As Court Okays Use Of Manual Register

The IEBC’s decision to hold the general elections on August 9th without using the manual voter registration has been overturned by the High Court.

The IEBC’s judgment, according to Justice Mugure Thande, is unlawful and will probably prevent the majority of voters from voting.

The decision of the IEBC via a letter dated June 10, 2022 declaring that the first respondent shall not use the manual register voter in the general elections on Tuesday, June 9, 2022 is illegal, and the said decision is hereby invalidated, was declared unlawful by the court.

Additionally, the IEBC has been instructed to take all necessary actions to guarantee that the petitioners’ and citizens’ constitutional rights are upheld.

In a similar vein, the court ordered the commission to make sure that administrative measures are taken to ensure that no qualified citizen’s right to vote in elections is denied.

Thande asserted that the commission’s justifications for believing that the printed version might have been altered are insufficient and that the decision was hasty given that technology is likewise susceptible to manipulation.

The court seemed perplexed as to what would happen in a situation the KIEMS Kits breaks down “What will occur if the KIEMs kit malfunctions?” Posed the court.

The judge referred to it as dangerous and added that it might also affect a voter’s eligibility.

Nigeria Steps Up Security In Abuja After Attack

Nigerian police have increased security around the capital of Abuja after last week’s ambush of presidential guards in a suburb and a deadly attack on a military checkpoint.

Nigerian media reported two soldiers were killed in the July 28 attack and others were injured. The attack came just weeks after a brazen jailbreak in Abuja that freed hundreds, including high profile terrorism convicts.

The reinforcement was announced Tuesday by national police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, following a national security management team meeting held in Abuja.

Adejobi said the police have ordered a massive deployment of operatives and operational assets around the capital but did disclose how many more officers will be deployed.

Adejobi did not respond to VOA’s request for more details on Wednesday. But Abuja police spokesperson Josephine Adeh told VOA the decision to withhold operational details was in the interest of security.

“Crimes have taken a new trend and we too are strategizing, that’s all,” Adeh said. “We are doing more deployment, that is the strategy we’re taking. You’ll see more visibility policing.”

The massive deployment comes amid rising security threats in the Nigerian capital, even though authorities have told citizens not to worry.

Local media reported two soldiers were killed during an attack on a military checkpoint in Niger state near Abuja last Thursday.

It was the second recent attack in Abuja blamed on the militant group Islamic State West Africa Province. An attack last month on an Abuja prison freed about 440 inmates, including many alleged terrorists.

The American non-profit SITE intelligence group said Friday’s attack was an indication that the Islamic State group has drawn too close to the Nigerian capital.

Police spokesperson Adeh said residents should trust the security forces.

“We’ve always been assuring the residents that everything is under control but they choose to believe fake news and whatever they see on social media,” she said. “There’s no cause for alarm. People should go about their lawful businesses.”

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned latest attacks in the country and said he had “given security forces full freedom to bring an end to this madness.”

But security analyst Senator Ireogbu said authorities have failed to deliver on its promise to make the country safe.

“Though we have a very faulty security architecture, the security apparatus can effectively deal with the problem arising from these terrorists,” Ireogbu said. “The challenge we’re having is that the political will is not there, especially from the presidency, they keep on pushing, outsourcing the blames to others, not taking responsibility.”

Nigeria faces growing insecurity, especially in its northern states.

Last week, an Abuja-based security and risk management firm, Beacon Security Consulting, said violent attacks in Nigeria increased by 47% in the first half of the year compared to 2021.

The bodies were taken to the mortuary.

“We have put security in place to receive those ballot papers and to secure them, we expect that exercise to be completed in the next day or two, the other materials are in place, we expect no problems there,” he said.

The County Elections manager said they have established an Election Security arrangement program (ESAP) which involves all state stakeholders from the office of the Director of Public prosecution, to IEBC and the office of the registrar of Political parties, NCIC and other state offices.

“In terms of election preparedness as far as Kilifi county is concerned, I can say with confidence that we are prepared for the elections,” he said.

Gure called for peace and tranquility during the election period adding that their main them was ‘Kilifi County has chosen peace’ which is the message they were sending out to the public.

The Elections manager said Kilifi North has the highest number of registered voters with 116,942 registered voters followed by Kilifi South with 97,696, Malindi with 94,605, and Magarini with 80,128, Kaloleni 73,009, Ganze 67,257,  and Rabai which has the lowest with 53,115 registered voters.

“We have over 80,000 new registered voters added to the register this time and those voters who can make a significant difference and contribution to the electoral process,” he said.

He said there are a few areas of concern regarded as hotspots but cannot be compared to that of 2013 but they are working closely with security apparatus to deal with any emerging cases.

“The hotspots will be watched closely and anybody intending to cause trouble will meet with the law,” he said.

Stakeholders interviewed called on residents of Kilifi to maintain peace during the elections.

Edward Kazungu a Kaya elder appealed for a peaceful election and said they do not expect a repeat of the post-election violence.

He said they have been sensitizing people in many ways through peace walks, and poems, among others to ensure peace prevails during the elections.

“We have seen that indeed IEBC is prepared for the elections and we have faith that this election will be free and fair,” he said.

Famau Mohamed a Muslim religious leader thanked IEBC for inviting stakeholders including religious leaders to update them on the progress of election preparedness and ensure they go out to sensitize community members to vote peacefully.

“We would urge members of the public to turn out in large numbers so as to ensure there are successful and peaceful elections so that people coexist peacefully, right now we have peace and would like to continue living peacefully,” he said.

Afye Swaleh the Muslim for Human Rights Field Coordinator Kilifi County said the IEBC sensitization forum has built confidence in the stakeholders by showing how prepared IEBC was for the electoral process.

“We are confident that there will be a fair and credible election because we have established that they are ready, hopefully, all will go well, it is for us to be calm and trust the process will be fair,” he said.

Ahmed Mudharis from Omar project Malindi said they have done sensitization to the youth against being used by politicians to cause violence by telling them to vote and go back home.

“I call upon everyone from Malindi and everywhere to be cooperative because the election is a season but life is important so all of us should vote peacefully and go home to wait for the results to be announced,” he said.

Mama Alice a representative of the business community in Kilifi county said they normally suffer during elections if it is not peaceful but hope that their sensitization efforts will bear fruits this time.

Influencer In Trouble After Eating A Great White Shark

A Chinese influencer is under police investigation after a clip of her roasting and eating a great white shark went viral.

Footage of the vlogger, known by her online pseudonym Tizi, showed her feasting on the predatory fish, which police in the central city of Nanchong confirmed was a great white.

“It may look vicious, but its meat is truly very tender,” Tizi said while tearing off large chunks of the animal’s barbecued meat, in a video posted in mid-July.

In the video, since deleted, she is seen unwrapping a 2-metre-long fish and lying down next to it to show it is taller than her. The shark is then sliced in half, marinated and barbecued, while the head is cooked in a spicy broth.

Great white sharks are listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature – one step before being classed as endangered.

Populations of sharks – some of the oceans’ most important apex predators – have been threatened over the past few decades, in particular by finning and industrial longline fishing.

In China, they are listed as protected. Illegal possession can lead to a five- to 10-year prison term.

“It is flabbergasting that an internet celebrity can eat a protected animal in front of millions in broad daylight!” wrote one commentator in response to the story.

“These uncultured attention-mongers will stoop very low to attract eyeballs!” another said.

It is unclear whether Tizi, who has almost 8 million followers, will be punished.

She told local media she acquired the shark through “legal channels”, but the local agriculture bureau said on Monday her claim was “inconsistent with the facts” and that police were investigating.

Man Who Killed Nicki Minaj Father Jailed For One Year

The man who fatally struck Nicki Minaj‘s father in a hit-and-run accident in New York in 2021 has been sentenced to one year in jail, PEOPLE confirms.

Charles Polevich, 71, was sentenced Wednesday following the death of Charles Maraj, 64, whom he hit with his Volvo on Long Island in February 2021. Newsday and TMZ were first to report the news.

Polevich must also pay a $5,000 fine and will have his driver’s license suspended, a spokesperson for the Nassau County Courthouse confirms.

“This is just a tragic situation and a situation which if, I think by all accounts, if [he] had stayed at the scene of this accident, this would’ve been a civil matter, not a criminal matter at all,” his attorney Marc Gann tells PEOPLE. “I don’t think he was responsible for the accident, but he was certainly responsible for the conduct after leaving the scene of the accident. And it’s my belief and strong opinion that he suffered from a medical issue, I think a heart issue, that resulted in his leaving the scene of the accident and not being able to recall his conduct or whereabouts thereafter.”

Nicki Minaj, 39, said shortly after losing her father that his death was “the most devastating loss” of her life.

“Tho I can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life,” she wrote on her website in May 2021. “I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he’s gone. Life is funny that way.”

Maraj died in the hospital one day after the incident, during which Polevich struck him with his 1992 Volvo station wagon as he walked in Mineola, New York. Police later said that Polevich was “absolutely aware of what happened” in the accident, but fled the scene anyway.

“He got out of the car, looked at the deceased, got into his car and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911 and calling an ambulance for the man. He went home and secreted his vehicle,” Nassau County Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a press conference shortly after the incident.

Polevich pleaded guilty in May to two felony charges, including leaving the scene of a fatal crash and tampering with physical evidence.

Kenya Kwanza Secures Court Order To Hold Last Rally At Nyayo Stadium

Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto has obtained court orders allowing him to hold his final rally at Nyayo National Stadium.

This follows a temporary order issued by High Court Judge Justice Joseph Sergon allowing the party to use the stadium for their final rally on August 6, 2022.

The order prevented the government from withdrawing the premises from the party pending the outcome of an interpartes hearing in a suit filed by UDA Secretary General Veronica Maina.

“In the meantime, an interim order is granted suspending the implementation by the defendant/respondent by itself, its servants, employees, agents, successors, assignees or anyone acting or claiming through or under the defendant/respondent of the decision contained in the letter dated July 20, 2022 withdrawing the availability of the suit premises to the applicant on July 6, 2022 pending the interpartes hearing of the aforesaid motion,” reads in part the order.

Ms Maina had petitioned Sports Kenya under a certificate of urgency on August 1, 2022, over its decision to deny them access to Nyayo Stadium.

“I have considered the facts deponed in the affidavit sworn by Veronica Maina and filed in support of the motion dated August 1, 2022. I am convinced the aforesaid motion is urgent. The motion is fixed for interpartes hearing on August 3, 2022.”

Sports Kenya, as the defendant/respondent, was required to file and serve its responses by August 2, 2022.

Azimio and UDA were involved in a tug of war last month over the rights to use the iconic stadium for their final rally.

The two camps intended to end their months-long campaigns in the capital city, and they claim to have reserved Nyayo Stadium for a political meeting on August 6.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Azimio Secretary General Junet Mohammed, who is also Suna East MP, said Mr Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua will hold their final rally in Nairobi, the same venue their archrival DP Ruto is claiming.

“The Azimio campaign team, led by Baba na Martha (Mr Odinga and Ms Karua), will hold its last official campaign meeting in Nairobi on August 6, 2022 at Nyayo Stadium,” said Mr Mohammed.

“As the country approaches the general election in 20 days, the Azimio team wishes to thank all Kenyans of goodwill who have turned up in their millions all over the country at meetings, rallies, and in person in this historic journey to a fair, just, prosperous and inclusive nation,” said Mr Mohammed.

At the same time, DP Ruto’s team announced that they had reserved the same venue for their final rally on the same day (August 6).

“For your information and for the public record, the Nyayo National Stadium venue is already secured and fully booked by United Democratic Alliance (UDA)/Kenya Kwanza Alliance for August 6,” said Ms Maina.
