Kenya Power to Set Up Charging Stations

Kenya Power is now planning to roll out electric vehicle charging stations, known as E-mobility services, across the country, beginning with Nairobi and Nakuru.

In an Expression of Interest (EOI) dated August 2nd 2022, the utility provider invited relevant partners to assist in the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Charging System, E-Mobility Network Infrastructure System (ENIS).

“Kenya Power now intends to implement an ENIS. The system will ensure that e-mobility customers in Kenya can be served in a seamless manner countrywide where Kenya Power has grid presence,” read the notice.

The conception course will begin in September, after the company announced that the implementation will last six months, until March 2023. Following the success of the concept phase, the company plans to expand to the rest of the country within the next two years.

The proposed ENIS, according to the notice, will include charging infrastructure, a billing and payment system, and customer service management.

Kenya Power estimates that the venture into E-mobility service provision could generate up to Ksh 120 million per day from charging stations if properly implemented, classifying it as a potential venture.

During the March 2022 launch of the electric vehicle start-up BasiGo’s Sh5 million bus, CEO Rosemary Oduor stated that Kenya Power has the capacity to charge 50,000 buses and two million motorcycles during off-peak hours.

The move is a step in the right direction toward going green, lowering carbon emissions and encouraging the use of clean energy.

“Decarbonisation has however become a major global theme that is changing and driving the energy landscape today in order to achieve net zero emissions by the year 2050. Mobility, consisting of road, aviation, rail, maritime, and other forms of transportation account for 19% of Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and 2% of Nitrogen Dioxide (N2O) emissions,” stated the company.

Electric energy has also been shown to be less expensive than the current use of conventional fuel, whether gasoline or diesel.

Kisii: Sam Ongeri Runnning Mate Quits

Sam Ongeri, the DAP-K party's Kisii Governor candidate

Sam Ongeri, the DAP-K party’s Kisii Governor candidate, has been dealt a setback after his running mate Josiah Maaga ditched him.

Ongeri was in Kisii State Lodge on Wednesday for a Gusii Leaders meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta when Maaga dropped him in favor of UDA candidate Ezekiel Machogu.

The ‘defection’ is the second to hit a Kisii governor candidate in less than two months.

KNC candidate Manson Oyongo was also dealt a setback when his running mate Alfred Ndemo defected to ODM’s Simba Arati.

Maaga told journalists that Bomachoge elders urged him to defect.

He claimed he was “recalled by the elders,” who forwarded him to deputise Ongeri.

“I don’t have the power on my own to make such a decision, I was only sent to deputise Ongeri with the same community that sent me there,” stated Maaga.

Everything in the country, according to Maaga, was done communally, and his decision to abandon Ongeri was unanimously agreed upon by the same community.

Maaga stated that he would await further briefing from the same individuals who ‘deployed me there.’

Part of the community’s concern with Ongeri was his failure to run an effective campaign while running for the County seat.

“His campaign has largely been shoddy and lacking in vigour,” said Maaga.

He said he already saw signs of losing the polls.

“We were losing and that is why I accept this decision to withdraw me from him so that we support Machogu,” said Maaga.

China Fires Missiles In Taiwan Strait

Washington is on edge as China readies a series of provocative military drills set to kick off on Thursday in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Beijing has threatened incursions into the island’s territory, and for the first time, conventional missile launches over the island.

The Chinese navy is positioning warships around the island, including its two aircraft carriers that have left port in recent days, in what officials described as a blockade. The Chinese defense ministry released a map of six zones surrounding the island where it plans to conduct the drills, some of which potentially overlap with Taiwan’s territorial waters. The live-fire exercises will begin at noon local time on Thursday and last three days.

Meanwhile, Taiwan was forced to scramble fighter jets on Wednesday to respond to 27 Chinese military aircraft that flew through its air defense zone, a large area that includes Taiwan’s airspace and extends over mainland China, according to its defense ministry, following a similar incursion on Tuesday. Twenty-two of those crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait, which sits 12 nautical miles from the shore and separates the island from mainland China.

Crossing the center line is a rare move that Beijing preserves for sending stronger signals, but Beijing has done so before — pushing aircraft over the median line for the first time in 20 years in 2019, and has done so again on several occasions since then.

Officials say they see China’s moves thus far as mostly bluster. But there are signs Beijing is planning more provocative military actions during the upcoming exercise. China has never before flown aircraft or launched missiles into Taiwan’s territorial waters — something that could happen during the drills, said Bonnie Glaser, an East Asia analyst at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Chinese state media, tightly controlled by the ruling communist party, on Wednesday called the exercises “unprecedented” and said the missile launches and naval blockade of the island demonstrate the “Chinese mainland’s absolute control over the Taiwan question.”

The drills will involve China’s most sophisticated military equipment, including J-20 stealth fighters, H-6K bombers, Type 052D destroyers, Type 056A corvettes, DF-11 short-range ballistic missiles, and DF-17 hypersonic missiles, the state-run Global Times reported.

Drake Tests Positive For COVID

The scheduled Young Money Reunion concert featuring Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne will now have to wait a little longer after Drake tested positive for COVID-19.

Drake said on Monday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and that the event will be postponed in a story on his verified Instagram account.

“I am truly devastated to say that I tested positive for COVID and the Young Money reunion show scheduled for tonight is being rescheduled to the soonest date possible,” the post read.

“I will keep the city posted and share the new date whenever we have it locked.”

The concert was set to happen Monday as part of Drake’s October World Weekend festival held in Toronto.

Drake apologized for disappointing fans who had been looking forward to seeing the former label mates perform together.

“Until then I hope everyone stays safe and healthy and I love you all,” Drake wrote. “I am so sorry for letting you down on our weekend together and the moment I test negative I will give you everything I got on stage (except the COVID-19).”

Raila, Ruto Leads Kenyans in Praising Omanyala 100M Gold

Raila Odinga, the Azimio presidential candidate, and his Kenya Kwanza counterpart William Ruto congratulated 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala on winning Kenya’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Raila took to Twitter on Thursday to congratulate the 100 m sprinter, saying he has been consistent and focused.

“Africa’s fastest man, a son of our soil, Ferdinand Omanyala, you have made our entire nation proud. Your victory exemplifies the results of focus, courage, consistency, and sacrifice. Congratulations!”  Raila tweeted.

Omanyala, according to Ruto, has made his country and the entire African continent proud.

“Kenya’s gem and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala gets gold at the Commonwealth Games, clocking 10.02 seconds. What a man! We are proud of you,” Ruto tweeted.

Omanyala dethroned defending champion and rival Akani Simbine from South Africa after clocking 10.02 second in the finals of the 100m on Wednesday, August 3, 2022.

Omanyala is the second Kenyan to take the title after Seraphino Antao in 1962, when the event was still run over 100 yards.

DPP Haji Orders Probe into Joho, Sudi Edited Video

DPP Noordin Haji has asked Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to investigate Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed in connection with a doctored video posted on their Twitter accounts.

The video, which was released on Tuesday, was manipulated to show Deputy President William Ruto shaming certain ethnic communities in Rift Valley.

He added that the investigation will also look into an audio clip that was allegedly a recorded phone call between Junet and an IEBC commissioner.

Haji stated that the investigation should be completed as soon as possible because the alleged materials could sow seeds of discord.

The DPP established a call center to handle any election-related incidents.

The center, which opened on Wednesday, will be open 24 hours a day to receive and document any cases of violence against civilians.

He stated that the data from the distress calls will serve as the foundation for the files and evidence developed by prosecutors in order to charge the perpetrators in court.

According to Haji, this election cycle will be different from previous ones because victims of poll-related violence will receive prompt justice.

“No violence perpetrator will go scot-free,” he said.

The center is a collaboration between civil society organizations such as Transparency International, Haki Africa, the International Justice Mission, Amnesty International, and the ICJ-Kenya chapter.

Haji stated that the efforts were to supplement the police’s efforts to record the cases as they were reported.

He described it as a multi-pronged intervention to combat electoral violence, which he described as an ongoing feature of Kenya’s electoral cycles.

The DPP stated that his office had assigned 200 special prosecutors to handle cases of electoral violence in the country.

In addition, Chief Justice Martha Koome had gazetted 118 magistrates and five special courts dedicated to hearing cases involving hate speech and electoral violence.

Toll-free numbers for victims to call the center are 0800723377 and +254110939802.

Sheila Masinde, executive director of Transparency International, believes the DPP should broaden his focus to prosecute cases involving the misuse of public resources in partisan campaigns.

He should also hold accountable public employees who have openly participated in political campaigns.

Masinde stated that her lobby had created a portal where members of the public could lodge up to 1200 cases relating to the use of public resources in campaigns, and that once they were all consolidated, they would like the DPP to give them attention and address them.

She stated that the IEBC had informed it that state officers who had resigned and were participating in the elections had not declared the public assets in their possession as required by law.

Hussein Khalid, the CEO of Haki Africa, stated that his organization has seen an increase in violence by organized groups such as MRC, and that the region needs to be scrutinized to ensure that violence is not used to prevent voters from exercising their rights.

Katy Perry Throws Pizza To Fans

When Katy Perry last performed in a Las Vegas nightclub, pizza slices were flying everywhere. People are clamoring for her to keep throwing slices for them after a video of the “Roar” singer doing so went viral.

China Launches Biggest Military Drill Off Taiwan Coasts

China is kicking off its biggest-ever military exercises in the seas around Taiwan following US politician Nancy Pelosi’s visit.

The live fire drills began at 12:00 local time (04:00 GMT) and in several areas were due to take place within 12 miles of the island.

Taiwan said China was trying to change the status quo in the region.

Ms Pelosi made a brief but controversial visit to Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province.

The drills are Beijing’s main response, although it has also blocked some trade with the island.

The exercises are due to take place in busy waterways and will include long-range live ammunition shooting, Beijing says.

Taiwan says it amounts to a sea and air blockade while the US said the drills were irresponsible and could spiral out of control.

Analyst Bonnie Lin told the BBC that the Taiwanese military would react cautiously but there was still a risk of confrontation.

“For example, if China decides to fly planes over Taiwan’s airspace, there is a chance that Taiwan might try to intercept them. And we could see a mid air collision, we could see a lot of different scenarios playing out,” she said.

Taiwan said it scrambled jets to warn off Chinese warplanes on Wednesday and its military fired flares to drive away unidentified aircraft over the Kinmen islands, located close to the mainland.

Several ministries have suffered cyber-attacks in recent days, the Taiwanese government said.

Taiwan has also asked ships to take different routes and is negotiating with Japan and the Philippines to find alternative aviation routes.

President Kenyatta inaugurates National Defence University-Kenya

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday inaugurated the National Defence University-Kenya, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to empowering the country’s defence, security and governance professionals through the provision of quality training.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at Lanet in Nakuru County, President Kenyatta emphasized that without high-quality human capital, the pursuit of sustained socio-economic development will remain a mere dream.

“…in the past, focus has been on non-security related education with narrow-mind thinking that higher education was not particularly relevant for the security sector.

“As part of our broad reforms in the education sector, my administration has had to rethink this view; because we equally need strategic thinkers even in the security sector,” President Kenyatta said.

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) is the first public university to be established under Section 24 of the Universities Act 2012 as an entity of national strategic importance.

The Head of State, who is also the chancellor of the NDU-K expressed satisfaction that the institution of higher learning has joined the ranks of a few international universities mandated to offer high-quality security-related training and education programmes.

He added that the establishment of the National Defence University-Kenya aligns well with the overall Government strategy of crystalizing the reforms in the education sector to drive Kenya’s socio-economic transformation agenda.

President Kenyatta awarded a charter creating the National Defence University-Kenya that will confer specialized degrees and offer courses in the fields of defence, security and strategy on May 27 last year.

“I am glad to note that within the 12-month transition period, the university has made commendable progress against the benchmarks set out in the governing instruments, especially the charter. We now have fully functioning management and governance frameworks to facilitate seamless service delivery to stakeholders,” he said.

The President pointed out that the university will contribute to strengthening Kenya’s position as an education hub as well as enhance the country’s capacity to align with the evolving regional and global security environment.

Partnering with relevant stakeholders in developing capacities at various levels of national defence and security architecture, President Kenyatta said the university is set to enrich the country’s multi-agency and whole-of-government approach to service delivery.

“Fundamentally, the National Defence University-Kenya as a national think-tank, shall play an active role in transforming our peace and security frameworks for posterity,” President Kenyatta said.

He urged the university council and management to optimize the institution’s capabilities and align its programmes with best practices through mentorship and benchmarking to ensure continuous improvement of human capital and infrastructure.

“As I prepare to pass the leadership baton to the next administration, I wish to state that it has not just been an honour for me to serve as your Commander-in-Chief but more importantly, I really appreciate the support you have rendered to me in building our nation.

“I will remain forever grateful given the enormous strides we have accomplished together for this great country,” President Kenyatta said.

Chief of the Defence Forces General Robert Kibochi said the National Defence University-Kenya stands out as one of the pillars of training in higher education and research in the entire continent of Africa.

“There aren’t very many of them and this will stand out as a training base in this region,” General Kibochi said.

Present at the ceremony were Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and military top brass including the university’s Vice-Chancellor Lt. General J. M. Mwangi among other senior Government officials.

Uhuru: Raila, Karua Have Your Best Interests

President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged residents of Kisii and Nyamira to elect leaders allied to the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance, who have the interest of the country at heart.

President Kenyatta spoke on Wednesday when he addressed a mammoth public rally at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii town that was attended by people from Kisii and Nyamira counties.

The President, who had earlier held a leaders meeting at the Kisii State Lodge, also urged political leaders to conduct peaceful campaigns without scaring voters.

He said the development momentum the country has gained will not be disrupted if Kenyans put the interests of the country above personal gains.

“To succeed, you must be a team. People must work together if you are to succeed. We have been able to work together all along… and that is how we want to continue building the unity of this nation.

“There is no one tribe that alone has the capacity to develop this nation. The country belongs to every citizen regardless of where he or she comes from. We must be equally regarded and respected,” President Kenyatta said.

He restated that his intention has always been to unite Kenyans as well as ensuring equity and inclusivity.

At the same time, President Kenyatta thanked Kisii and Nyamira residents for supporting him throughout his tenure, saying their steadfast support enabled the National Government to implement a wide range of projects that have transformed the region.

“It has been a pleasure for me to work together with you, we have achieved what we could have. On the side of roads, we have tarmacked 200 kilometers in these two counties.

“We have also increased the number of homesteads connected to electricity on the national grid, we have increased the number of hospitals and health centres and water projects as well,” the President said.

In this connection, President Kenyatta expressed optimism that the next Government will continue working to uplift the lives of Kenyans to higher levels.

“Work does not end, you do what you can and leave others to continue because it is just like that. The life of a nation is a continuous process, but the most important thing is that it must be a process where people move together,” President Kenyatta said.
