CBK Licences Egypt’s Banque Misr-S.A.E.

Egypt’s second-largest lender, Banque Misr-S.A.E., has obtained a license to operate a representative office in Kenya, with the goal of pursuing trade finance deals for Egyptian businesses looking to expand into the East African region.

The Central Bank of Kenya announced on Tuesday that it had granted the license to the State-owned lender, making it the second Egyptian bank with a presence in Nairobi, following Egypt’s largest private lender Commercial International Bank’s purchase of a controlling stake in Kenya’s Tier-III Mayfair Bank in 2020.

“The CBK announces the granting of authority to Banque Misr–S.A.E. of Egypt to establish a Representative Office in Kenya by the name Banque Misr – S.A.E.– Kenya Representative Office,” said the CBK in a statement.

Under the Banking Act, Representative Offices of foreign banks in Kenya serve as marketing and liaison offices for their parent banks and affiliates and are not permitted to undertake banking business.

The new license brings the total number of foreign bank representative offices in Nairobi to ten.

On behalf of their parent banks, these units conduct research, marketing, and liaison activities. They are, however, prohibited from providing commercial banking services, including deposit taking, unless they establish a full-fledged subsidiary or branch.

“The Representative Office is expected to play a catalytic role in strengthening the long-standing trade relationship between Egypt and Kenya.”

Banque Misr – S.A.E. provides a wide range of retail and corporate banking services, as well as trade finance services in its home country and internationally.

Outside Egypt, it has operations in the Middle East, Europe, Russia, South Korea, and China.

Betty Kyallo Regrets Posting Ex

Betty Kyallo, a media celebrity turned businesswoman, has expressed regret for promoting her ex-boyfriend, Nick Ndeda, on social media.

After months of suspicion and keeping their relationship under wraps, the former K24 news anchor finally revealed Ndeda to the world.

Kyallo stated that introducing Ndeda on her social media channels, which she refers to as her personal zone, was superfluous.

Notably, during their partnership, the businesswoman did the most of the work, whilst Ndeda rarely uploaded Kyallo or made a big deal about their connection.

“In my last relationship, I put him out on social media and I am now like, I will never do that again. That is my space and we should stop overlapping each other when it comes to my social media space,” she said.

Kyallo confirmed her split with Ndeda in February, stating that she was focused on growing her business and caring for her daughter Ivanna.

Wife of Nigerian Man killed in Italy Calls For Justice

The wife of a Nigerian street seller killed in Italy has told the BBC that she is seeking justice for her husband’s “terrible death.”

Aliku Ogorchukwu, 39, was allegedly peddling handkerchiefs in the beach resort of Civitanova Marche on Friday when he was tracked down and killed.

An Italian man, 32, has been arrested on charges of murder and robbery.

A video that has gone viral shows a man standing on top of Ogorchukwu and striking him with his bare fists.

None of those who witnessed the broad daylight attack appeared to intervene.

“This is a form of wickedness I don’t know,” Ogorchukwu’s wife, Charity Oriachi, told the BBC’s Focus on Africa.

Ms Oriachi said she had received help in coming to terms with her husband’s death but was tired of “talk”. Now, she was only interested in justice, she insisted.

Her family had lived in Italy for a long time, she said, stressing that her husband had never sought any trouble.

The killing has sparked outrage in the local community, including Nigerians, who took to the streets over the weekend and are planning another demonstration soon.

The Nigerian government has asked Italian authorities to quickly “bring the perpetrator of the heinous act” to justice.

The suspect – a white man named as Filippo Claudio Giuseppe Ferlazzo – has been ordered to remain in jail as the investigation continues.

His defence lawyer told the media the suspect had said he was sorry and that there was “no racial element” involved.

A police investigator said Ogorchukwu was attacked after the trader’s “insistent” requests to the suspect and his partner for spare change.

The partner, identified as Elena D, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that Ogorchukwu had touched her arm, but that did not bother her.

Ms Oriachi now wants to see the suspect “face to face”, to understand why he killed her husband, the family’s lawyer told the Associated Press.

DPP Haji Stumbles In KPLC Fake Transformers Scandal

Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has suffered a setback as the court thwarts his attempt to pin former KPLC top managers to the fake transformer scandal.

In the case former KPLC managing directors Ben Chumo and Ken Tarus are charged alongside nine others.

Taxpayers lost Sh 201 million for the tender to supply faulty transformers in 2018. According to the prosecution, investigators managed to save Sh 207 million which would have been fraudulently stolen if the contract payment proceeded.

On May 30, 2022, the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (ODPP) applied to amend the charge sheet to include new terminologies. According to the state, upon evaluation of the evidence on the court record and pending evidence to be adduced at trial, there were material reasons which would necessitate the amendment of the charges currently facing the accused persons.

Further, the ODPP had argued that the proposed amendments would enable the court to arrive at a fair determination of the matter and that it would not prejudice the rights of the accused persons.

However, the court ruled that the nature of the amendment is to alter the initial theory of the prosecution’s case mainstream prejudicing the accused persons in their defences.

According to Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo of Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, an examination of the proposed amended charge sheet shows that fundamental changes are proposed in the majority of the charges in an attempt to disadvantage the accused persons.

” when the term prejudice is altered to unlawful, that essentially changes the offence and it becomes a new offence,” said the Chief Magistrate.

The Court ruled that the amendment coming after the testimony of 33 witnesses, it is prejudicial to the accused persons. “In my view, this entails prejudice, it is like subjecting the accused persons to a new trial in the middle of another. The motion for the amendment of the charge sheet fails in its entirety and it is therefore dismissed” ruled the court.

The court allowed the prosecution to proceed with the case using the initial charge sheet, however, the prosecution requested for adjournment of the case to a further date to give room for consultation from the authorities in relation to the court ruling. The case will be mentioned on August 25, 2022, to confirm the position of the ODPP.

Kajiado: Environment CS Inspects KFS Model Rangers House

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry Keriako Tobiko today inspected KFS model Rangers Houses in Mashuuru Sub County, Kajiado County.

Later, at the same location, the CS inspected an ongoing establishment of a tree nursery with a capacity of over 10,000 seedlings.

Once completed, the model tree nursery will have five continuous tunnels and two shed nets for seedling propagation.

The tree nursery will provide employment for youth and women while also providing tree seedlings for the sub-county, contributing to the country’s tree cover campaign.

The CS also inspected a borehole dug by the Kenya Forest Service in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces to supply water to the tree nursery and neighboring communities.

The collaboration between KFS and KDF reduced the project’s cost by 40 to 50 percent.

The borehole has a depth capacity of 160 meters, a yield of 4.2 cubic meters per hour, and fresh water.

A 20,000-litre solar-powered tank will be installed to distribute water to the tree nursery and surrounding communities.

The CS led the team in a tree-planting exercise in which several native trees were planted.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by NEMA Board members led by Chairman Mr Eric Mungai, KFS Commandant Alex Lemarkoko, NECC James Sapuro, and NET Secretary Belinda Akello, among others.

MOH Launches Suicide Prevention Strategy

On Tuesday, the Acting Director General in The Ministry of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth joined by partners launched the suicide prevention strategy 2021-2026 whose goal is to achieve a 10% reduction in suicide mortality by 2026 in the country.

Speaking during the launch Dr. Amoth said the Suicide prevention strategy will establish & operationalize suicide prevention program at national & county levels & strengthen supportive policy, legal & financing environment for effective implementation of the suicide program.

The strategy also seeks to improve access to comprehensive, integrated & quality services for suicide interventions at all levels of care, as well as increase awareness on suicide & suicide prevention & address stigma while strengthening systems for surveillance & research.

“As a country, and as a ministry, achieving the aforementioned strategic actions will mean that Kenya meets the #SDGs indicators for health, target 3.4.2 which, aims to reduce premature mortality from #ncds by one third by the year 2030,” Dr. Amoth said.

He called on all stakeholders to join the ministry in the effort to implement the strategy in the attainment of a 10% reduction in suicide mortality by the year 2026.

The World Health Organization (WHO) factsheet, 2021, indicates suicide is a leading cause of mortality, and among 15–19-year-olds it remains the fourth leading cause of death. The WHO also estimates that the Kenya’s age-standardized suicide rate to be 11.0 in 100,000.

Globally, 700,000 persons are estimated to die by suicide every year with most of the deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

According to the DG scarcity of data on suicide in Kenya as a result of underreporting which, is associated criminalization of suicide under the penal code leading to fear of stigma & persecution & lack of a formal data collection mechanism for suicide data.

The WHO indicates that for every completed suicide, there has been more than 20 other attempts by others.

“In 2018 alone, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reported 421 deaths by suicide in the country,” Dr. Amoth said.

“Suicide, ladies and gentlemen is preventable. We do not have to lose our youth to suicide, we do not have to lose the future of our country, the future of our economy,” Dr Amoth stressed.

The acting DG advised the youth to come together and help each other cope during times of uncertainty. We need to check in with our friends and neighbours. Let us not ignore the friend who has gone silent on us.

“Let us walk with them to the healthcare facilities and encourage them to get the much-needed mental health and psychosocial support,” Dr. Amoth advised.

Land issues Dominate Kilifi Politics As Candidates Hunt Votes

In the final stretch of the campaign towards next week’s General Election, the land issue is dorminating the political scene.

Titling and ending of the squatter problems have since dominated the Kilifi Gubernatorial race as the date to the 2022 race narrows down to a close.

While the ODM Gubernatorial candidate Gideon Mung’aro a former LAnds CAS in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration has been busy issuing title deeds Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) candidate George Kithi assured residents of Kilifi that once elected there would be no demolition or eviction of squatters.

Addressing a series of rallies in Malindi constituency Kithi and his brigade said their administration will set up a kitty to acquire land belonging to absentee landlords so s to resolve the land issue amicably.

The PAA candidate who was accompanied by Party spokesman Lucas Maitha, Woman Rep Candidate Christine Zawadi, Malindi Constituency candidate Willy Mtengo together with MCA candidates toured Jilore, Kakuyuni, Ganda, Malindi town ward, and Shella ward with 12 rallies for the day.

The Kilifi Governor hopeful said as a lawyer he would not allow locals to suffer again and announced that any tycoon who would forcefully evict squatters under his watch could lose his land.

“The government has the responsibility to ensure its people live on land, you will not live on water surface so you will not go anywhere because you were born in this world,” he said.

He said if there is anyone who claims ownership of a parcel of land he or she must show the land ownership documents.

Kithi warned the land grabbers that their days are numbered as once elected no one will be allowed to come and demolish houses for Kilifi people once he is elected.

“As the governor, I say this even if once has court orders to evict people he must go through the office of the Governor there will be no demolition its a security issue to demolish people’s houses, whoever has complaints over land and its a devolved functi8on shall have to go thro9ugh the governor to allow or disallow,” he said.

Kithi said the tendency of land owners from Nairobi or anywhere else in the county to demolish houses shall become a thing of the past.

He said those land owners must surrender their title deed and will be paid their money to ensure locals get land ownership documents and live peacefully.

“The issue of threatening people will not be tolerated anymore the squatter problem is something created once you et titles you will be able to uplift your living standards,” she said.

Mung’aro on his part said people should stop politicizing the land issue in Kilifi adding that there are so many problems affecting people.

Speaking in Ganze when issued title deeds the ODM Gubernatorial candidate said during his tenure as Lands CAS he spent much time ensuring locals get land ownership documents.

In Magarini alone Mung’aro said they set up 22 Land settlement schemes and there are 14,000 title deeds that are ready.

“If you are given a chance to serve in government with authority do it so that even when you exit the people shall benefit from your efforts,” he said.

Maitha the Pamoja African Alliance Party Spokesman said as leaders they formed PAA so as to address the historical land injustices in the Coast region.

He said during the Post Election Violence in 2007 the government under President Kenyatta bought land and settled all IDPs who had been affected by the ethnic violence.

Maitha said PAA is tired of the fake promises that land issues will be addressed and called on residents to vote for all PAA candidates in Kilifi so as to push the agenda and resolve it completely.

“I would like to urge candidates for MPs and Woman Rep in PAA to ensure once elected you push the president to set up a budget for settling squatters in the Coast region once elected,” he said.

Zawadi who is currently serving as a Nominated senator but is eying the Woman Rep Seat on a PAA ticket told Kithi to ensure that the squatter problem is completely addressed once elected as Governor of Kilifi.

“Whenever one wants to rule you always makes you a slave and poor, here we were happy and benefit from the tourism sector do you think tourists are no longer coming to Kenya? They are coming but they do not reach the Coast as they are directed to the upcountry because their aim is to make us poorer,” she said.

Locals who got title deeds in Ganze thanked the Government for issuing the land ownership documents saying successive governments had failed but President Kenyatta’s regime has helped them get the documents.

Mung’aro Commits To Development Boom In Kilifi

Kilifi ODM gubernatorial candidate Gideon Mung’aro has promised to revamp the economic development of the region.

He said that can only be realised through heavily investing in cottage industry and tourism development to change the livelihood of the area.

Mr Mung’aro said Kilifi needed to focus on the beautification of its towns, put up industries and also focus on improving service delivery in all sectors to ensure those intending to do business in Kilifi receive a conducive environment.

He said this when he met leaders from the bodaboda sector who promised to support and vote for him come August ninth.

” I know the challenges you are going through. I have been a mayor in Malindi and my track record of development is very clear,” he said.

“I will make sure that the health and transport sectors are liberated to help you prosper,” he said.

Speaking in Malindi town, the former legislator and recently CAS for Devolution said he was determined to restructure the bodaboda sector by reviewing licencing, improving county askaris, police and bodaboda relationship to ensure their rights are protected.

He said his government will abolish the collection of rates and revenue through the use of county askaris but instead will employ sector players as agents within their business premises to avoid double dealings.

Mr Mung’aro said that he was also going to introduce a digital monitory system to all revenue collection areas through Mpesa to avoid cash handling by county officials.

“Unlike my opponents battling various legal suits, I have never been vindicated on any legal issues,” he added.

Mr Mung’aro urged the residents to be cautious and elect leaders who are ready to serve this county and not corrupt or leaders with some questionable records on integrity,” he said.

He promised to make sure that his administration achieve what Governor Kingi achieved in ten years at only three years in office.

Bodaboda operators led by its leaders John Randu Kombe and Ann Nzioki pledged their support for the candidate urging fellow constituents to vote for  Mr Mung’aro next week.

“We have faced many challenges including harassment from the county askaris, police and other many problems. However we are asking our members to make sure that  you go out in large numbers and vote,” said  Ms Nzioki

They asked Mr Mung’aro to ensure that he engages and considers them in his government once he takes power

Man United Eyes Huddlestone On Free Transfer

Manchester United are on the verge of signing free agent Tom Huddlestone as a player-coach for their Under-21 side, according to reports.

The ex-Tottenham midfielder has been out of contract since his previous deal with Championship side Hull City expired at the end of last season and is now on the verge of a surprise move to Old Trafford.

Huddlestone will not be part of the first-team squad and is being signed exclusively to help the club’s younger players.

The former Derby midfielder looks set to replace Paul McShane, who had fulfilled a similar role at United before retiring this summer.

The 36-year-old, who began his playing career in the United academy, re-joined the club in 2021 as a playing coach in the academy, but he will now continue his work as a United academy coach in the Professional Development Phase (U18 to U23).

Huddlestone’s imminent arrival is one of a number of new staffing additions at Old Trafford this summer, with manager Erik ten Hag keen to overhaul the club on and off the pitch.

In addition to assistants Steve McClaren and Mitchel van der Gaag, the Dutchman has also brought in former Porto and Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy as an attacking coach.

United have also raided Ajax yet again to sign performance analyst Kevin Keij, who was a crucial part of Ten Hag’s set-up in Amsterdam.
