President Ruto Meets World Athletics President, Pledges To End Doping

Kenya will not spare any efforts in the fight against doping.

President William Ruto said the Government will go an extra mile in protecting the integrity of athletics.

He announced that the Government has set aside Sh3 billion to help in the fight against doping for the next five years.

The President made the remarks on Thursday at State House, Nairobi, when he met the President of World Athletics Lord Sebastian Coe.

They pledged to work together in creating the right frameworks for athletes to succeed.

“We will collaborate with partners, sportsmen and their contacts to tackle doping that threatens our heritage,” said President Ruto.

Also in attendance during the meeting was Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba who had earlier thanked Coe for sparing Kenya from a potential athletics ban last year over increased doping cases after the government committed more funds to fight the scourge.

Moreover, Namwamba outlined the measures the government is implementing as promised in his address to Coe last month in a bid to save Kenya from the ban.

“We have already commenced the rollout of a grand plan to rid our sporting arena of doping. This plan brings together all relevant stakeholders in athletics, including the Athletics Kenya (AK), Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), our investigative and legislative arms of govt as well as the Ministry of Health,” Namwamba said in a statement.

On his part, Coe lauded the Kenyan government for its enhanced effort in fighting doping while also more support from World Athletics.
