Prime Obado Properties Seized in Corruption Scandal Headed for Sale

The noose is tightening around former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, as high-value properties linked to a massive KSh 1.9 billion graft scandal head to public auction.

The assets are now being liquidated to recover taxpayer money looted through fictitious procurement contracts in Migori County.

Among the Nairobi-based properties set to go under the hammer include:

  • A luxurious Lauretio Rich house valued at KSh 40 million,
  • A three-bedroom Riara apartment worth KSh 22 million,
  • Two Greenspan estate apartments worth KSh 18 million,
  • A Greenspan maisonette with a servant’s quarter valued at KSh 14.5 million,
  • And an unfinished plot in Runda pegged at KSh 50 million.

These properties are just a slice of what the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is targeting, with more auctions lined up in Kisumu and Migori.

In 2024, Obado struck a deal with EACC, opting for an out-of-court settlement that saw him surrender assets worth KSh 428 million, avoiding a protracted legal battle.

Originally, the EACC aimed to recover the entire KSh 1.9 billion lost through fraudulent contracts involving Obado and over 20 associates.

Funds raised from the auction will be deposited into the Consolidated Fund to support essential public services.

Despite political interference and “Mtu Wetu” sentiments from local supporters, the EACC maintains it is committed to dismantling corruption networks.

In the last five years, the Commission has recovered KSh 28 billion and is currently pursuing over 400 cases valued at more than KSh 50 billion.
