Kenyan prisons are set for a security overhaul, in a bid to protect officers and prisoners from riots and other insecurities.
Correctional Services Principal Secretary Safina Kwekwe Tsungu said the government has increased security in and around all prison facilities to ensure the safety of inmates and prison employees.Â
The PS stated that the government had set aside Sh800 million to build security fences, complete development projects, and strengthen the prisons industry across the nation, all of which she anticipated would be finished within the RRI timeframe of 100 days.
She reassured Kenyans that an occurrence like the one in November last year, when three terrorist inmates escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison, would not happen again since the government had enhanced prison surveillance and security.
“We’ve done everything we can to ensure that any security gaps are closed.” “We have now begun the process of securing all jails by erecting security barriers,” she stated.
Ms Tsungu, who was joined by Prisons Commission General John Warioba and other top officers from the State Department of Correctional Services, said prison officers are extremely cautious even when there are no security barriers.
Three convicted terrorists, Musharaf Abdalla, Joseph Juma, and Mohamed Abdi Abikar, escaped from the country’s largest and most secure jail on November 15, 2021, forcing then-Prisons Commissioner General Wycliffe Ogallo to resign.
On their route to Somalia, the three were apprehended in Kitui County for several days.
