Prominent Designer Cerruti Dies At 91

In Summary: Cerruti, who created the first deconstructed jacket in the 1970s, died at 91

Nino Cerruti, a pioneering Italian fashion designer who introduced “casual chic” to men’s fashion and dressed Hollywood luminaries in his heyday, has died at the age of 91.

He died at the Vercelli hospital in Piedmont’s northwest area, where he had been taken for a hip operation, according to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

“We have lost a titan among Italian entrepreneurs,” said Gilberto Pichetto, deputy minister of economic development.

Cerruti, who pioneered the deconstructed jacket in the 1970s, was a key character in 20th-century men’s ready-to-wear fashion, with a look that was both fashionable and comfortable.

Cerruti built his first store in Paris 1967, propelling his luxury brand onto the global stage.
