Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio, will leave the country on Saturday night for a one-week visit to the United States.
According to a statement released on Friday, Raila will join other African leaders in Washington DC for a US-Africa conference.
The former Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Washington on Monday for the December 13-15 summit.
“He will be attending the meeting in his capacity as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development,” a communication from his office said.
As an AU representative, Odinga will attend the US-Africa Leaders Summit alongside other world leaders. He will lead discussions on encouraging infrastructure investment and achieving a just energy transition.
Along with the Summit, he will meet with representatives from civil society, government, and the private sector.
The announcement comes just one day after he canceled the parallel Jamhuri Day celebrations planned for December 12.
Raila is expected to return by December 18 and to continue with his scheduled public consultative meetings.
“He will be back in the country by December 18 to proceed with planned public programmes,” the press release said.
