BY FAITH MUTETE – The department of civil registration is having a Re-birth as Interior & Coordination of National Government Cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi made his fourth visit on Thursday, Friday and Monday for a push for changes at the birth registry.

From his current visits some of the changes witnessed as the department include

  • Availability of seats at the waiting area ,unlike in the past where people stood at the halls
  • Deployment of NYS officers at the customer care unit to serve people
  • Installation of machines and many workers to serve people who have come for their birth certificates
  • Availability of name tags to department staff as part of efforts to chase away brokers

The CS mentioned that he was happy that things had started moving softly but insisted that his impromptu visits should not be the reason as to why things are moving.

He also noted that people applying for their documents should get them in a weeks’ time after receiving an SMS confirmation.

This clean up came a week after two senior managers were sent on compulsory leave, alleging that some government employees were deliberately making the system inefficient to ensure those seeking the services pay bribes.
