United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Presidential candidate Dr. William Ruto has picked former Uhuru ally Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.
The Mathira legislator was picked in the wee hours of the night, after a rigorous consultation with Kenya Kwanza leaders at the Karen Residence.
Ruto described Gachagua as a true depiction of commitment and lauded him for sticking by his side since his fall out with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gachagua, who sprung into politics as a District Officer during Moi’s KANU era, rose through ranks as a key ally to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He was President Uhuru’s personal assistant and a point man within his solid base in Mount Kenya.
In 2017 he landed his first breakthrough after being elected Mathira MP.
However, when Uhuru opted to broker a truce deal with his rival Raila Odinga, Gachagua switched sides to support Ruto.
Since then, he had been considered the main force in driving Mount Kenya votes to DP Ruto.
He emerged victorious amid the likes of Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Anne Waiguru, Justin Muturi and Alice Wahome who had been fronted for the job.
