Police in Migori are looking into the death of a Rongo University third-year student who was allegedly stabbed to death by a colleague while they were out drinking.
Prof Samuel Gudu, vice-chancellor of the university, said preliminary investigations revealed that the two had gone out for a drink before they disagreed over an unknown issue and began fighting.
“We are very shocked by the incident that happened on Wednesday night. We understand that they fought while they were drinking. The suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed his fellow student,” Prof Gudu told the Nation on Tuesday after the death was announced to all students.
According to reports, the suspect is in police custody and cooperating with investigators.
According to a university statement, the student died while receiving treatment at Tabaka Mission Hospital in Kisii County.
The deceased was a third-year student at the School of Information, Communication, and Media Studies pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Journalism.
The deceased’s body was taken to Tabaka Mission Hospital Mortuary.
“On behalf of the student’s fraternity, I wish to convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and relatives. May the Lord give them strength to overcome the challenge. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” read the communication to the students.
