40-Year-Old Fisherman Drowns In Lake Victoria

A 40-year-old fisherman drowned in Lake Victoria near Sukru Island beach in Suba North constituency on Thursday evening after a strong wind and heavy rains hit his boat.

The deceased, Julius Okoth Oyugi, a fisherman at Sukru Island beach, left the island for the neighbouring Sota beach when strong winds prevailed in the lake, killing him.

The fisherman, who was alone in the boat, was attempting to retrieve the boat paddle, which had fallen into the lake after the waves hit his boat.

According to Sukru Island Beach Management Unit Chairperson (BMU) Peter Juma, Oyugi drowned and died instantly while attempting to grasp the peddle, leaving his boat behind.

According to the BMU chairperson, the fisherman was sailing his boat from Sukru Island to Sota Beach when he was killed in an unfortunate incident.

The local fishermen have begun searching for the deceased’s body.

Juma urges fishermen and other lake users to always follow water transport regulations in order to avoid drownings.
