Ruto Courts China To Extend SGR To Malaba

Kenya is seeking financing to continue the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project to Malaba.

President William Ruto says talks have begun on a joint offer involving Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo to boost freight flow and make the northern corridor competitive.

If the bid is successful, the SGR project will be extended to Kampala and Kasese via Mpondwe near Congo.

The President stated that the project will increase cargo flow and make the northern corridor competitive, where commodities will be transported by rail from the Port of Mombasa to the Uganda-DRC border, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

“We have all agreed on the need of this set of infrastructure as a means of facilitating trade across our continent and make sure companies that have set up in Kenya have access to Uganda and other countries,” the prime minister said.

Kenyan businessmen are aiming to export tea, coffee, and macadamia nuts to China as part of the discussions and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked on Tuesday.

The third Belt and Road Initiative conference, which includes host President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Kenyan President William Ruto, is set to conclude on Wednesday.
